In my opinion, this is something huge to watch. So called low path is found in Michigan, now a child who was athletic and in good shape dies of unknown flu symtoms! I sure would like to know where mom and dad work, if they travel overseas, or who their neighbors are, who he played with etc. Wow, I will be checking this often. God bless him and his family. |

On our local news (I am in the next city) said that he became ill on Friday with flu-like symptoms and died Sunday of a ruptured diagraghm. I have never heard of that one before. It's quite a bit early for the flu to be here in my opinion.

I wonder if he could have had a anyrisum that was not known about and the vomiting from being sick caused it to burst? I guess in the fall you do hear about a healthy kid dying of some wierd unknown genetic thing they have had, but they are saying this was flu like and whatever it is, if he went in on Friday and died on Sunday it was rapid. It is either genetic or we are in trouble. |

This is what I sent various people at the paper followed by this thread & link. IMHO, making contact with the reporter requesting further information (& maybe letting his superiors know of the interest may be helpful in easily acquiring more
information & getting the word out about Panedemic Flu.
We very much appreciated this article and thought you'd like to see where it ended up. I hope you can relay this message to Lania Colleman and that she will report details of the autopsy. As this is the seventh death of students there since 2003, it could be worthwhile knowing if any of the other deaths were due to unusual or unknown causes or came after flu symptoms.
Our sympathy to the family and our thanks to you for reporting this.

I would not expec the first vistim of H5N1 in the US to be a child. I would expect a hunter, or someone that works in the chicken or turkey industry or farm. An if this was the result of H2H there would probably be swamped hospitals by now.
I think this trageic event is more likely to be from EEE from an infected mosquito, just like in MA. The first symptoms of EEE are flu like symptoms and can progress very rapidly to death in a few short days.
I don't think it's time to panic yet, unless you live where I live and want to panic about EEE found in the mosquitos in the area.

Mach, my son plays soccer and soccer season just started. I see geese on those fields all the time. Those kids are so aggressive kicking up the dirt. When I know that H5N1 is in Calif., He quits soccer.

10-year-old football player dies after practice September 6, 2006 A 10-year-old youth football league player died after his diaphragm was ruptured, an injury authorities say they suspect he received during practice. An autopsy Tuesday showed that Logan M. Honsinger died from complications of a ruptured diaphragm, possibly caused by a football injury. “We don’t know exactly how it happened or when it happened,” said Saginaw County Medical Examiner Kanu Virani. “We don’t know if it was when he was tackled or when he fell down.” The county sheriff’s department is investigating. The boy was starting his first year in the Valley Youth Football League, which includes fifth- through eighth-graders from area schools. “They’re trying, but it’s hard to understand,” he said. |

I would believe that this is true. I thought it could be sports related. Thanks for all your investigating. My heart goes out to the family.

The article doesn't state which flu like symptoms. It could have been fever and body aches which would be inline with an internal injury. I agree with mach's take: if this were H2H we would be seeing hospital overload. How terrible to loose a child, nothing worse in the world.

People die of the flu all the time. This story should not be taken as an indication of H5N1. Several years ago I went to the hospital after the two ender flu with a blood pressure of 56 over 43. Luckily, they gave me IV's and I was on my way several hours later. It just proves that the seasonal flu can be very deadly let alone H5N1. We should all try to prepare the best we can, but don't jump to any conclusions about this article. He may have had unknown heart problems or have been fatally dehydrated.

As stated above- the boy died from a ruptured diaphragm, believed to be secondary to football practice/injury.
