Mountain House freeze dried products.

I bought a few items to try.  It's about 6.99 to buy a meal for 2 people.  So I went to the store and bought a few Items...Today Im trying Scrambled eggs with bacon.  As I tired them I'll let you know.  I even bought 2 samples of the Ice Cream...

Has anyone tried these products and if you have what's your opinion.

Thanks.

Ok I just tried the scrambled eggs and bacon.  Im made sure I was hungry to give it a fair test.  It's a one serving pouch.  I bought it at Gander Mountain was $5.99

This made 1 cup of egg/bacon.  That would be 2 eggs.  You add 1 cup of boiling water to the pouch and zip the pouch closed for 5-6 minutes.  Drain the excess water.

What did Crocodile Dudee say:  " You can live on it but it taste like $ht."

The bacon is bacon bits (soggy)...The kind you put on a salad.  The eggs would  taste better without the bacon.  I even tried pepper no salt.  Some of the eggs were chunky just like scambled eggs would be, but when you touch the eggs in your mouth they fall apain.  Almost like power.

So I give this a rating of D.  You can live on it and if you were starving I would eat this with no problem.  But I won't be buying the # 10 can.

Also I did eat the whole 1 cup just to see if it would fill  me up and it did.

See what I do for the forum. LOL  It wasn't easy to eat it all.

5.99 for 2 eggs is way more then I can afford.  I'm thinking about getting some chickens.  I don't want to do without eggs.

I'm afraid  that If they won't eat the food we buy, they'll take the chance and buy the food they want...This is why I think it's so important to make sure that the food your buying is the food your family will eat...

Yes if there starving they eat it, but it's easier to stay put if they don't get cravings and  take a chance and run to the market.  I don't care how the food is packaged.  Someone has to load the truck unload them stack the shelves and run the cash registers or even worst, take your money.

We got our powdered eggs from Honeyville. Not bad. I'd give them a B, maybe a B+...but in my book, real eggs are an A+

I have 6 #10 whole eggs from honeyville.  I so glad to hear you say there good.

I just tried the Neapolitan Ice Cream I opened it up and could believe it was a small brick of 3 inches by 1/2 inch and that was 1.99...

My son and I hated it...My daughter liked it but wouldn't finish it.  ...She said to suck on it, but that didn't help the flavor.

The Ice cream sandwich is much better.  It smaller than a regular ice cream sandwich and thiner.  It 1.99 at Dicks sporting goods.

It taste like Ice cream Sandwich that's warm...Im still not willing to pay the price for this dessert.  It's just not good enough.  We didn't finish it.  I throw it out.

I rather take that money buy Betty Crocker cake mix and use my powered eggs and oil to bake a cake...The box of cake mix is a dollar and the frosting is 1.00 dollar.  So for 2.00 I can have an entire cake.

I'm not giving up...Will be trying the Chicken Teriyaki w/rice ...I'll let you know.

I think most of the MH stuff is great for what it is. No it isn't like going to a good restaurant, but it isn't bad. I really like the Mac & Beef, Lasagna, Spaghetti, and the Raspberry Crumble.

I've said this before but it's really a good idea to order a trial packet of a food and try it. I bought a pouch of lasagna and it was WONDERFUL.

Today we tried the Mountain house Chicken Terriaki.  (SP)  I waited until we were really hungry.

It was a 2 serving package at 5.99.
It had red pepper rice pea's and defiantly tasted like terriaki.  However their was very little chicken.  mostly rice.    The chicken was only enough for one person.

My husband and daughter didn't like it.  I did eat some of it and ended up eating the chicken out of it and giving the rice to the dog.  She wouldn't eat it either.

I would eat this if I were really hungry but I'm not going to buy it.

I really am looking for some MH that my family will eat.  It would be a great asset.

I do love how easy it is to prepare.  Just add boiling water and zip the top close.

JMO.  I sure if  I were hungry I would think this a gourmet meal

I finally tried the Lasagna and meat sauce.  I have to say it was not bad.
I added a little garlic salt to it.   I also had it with bread a butter.  Not bad.

I can see eating this only as a emergency meal.  You just add 2 cups of water to a 2 serving package..5.99  zip the bag close and wait 10 minutes....Waa laa an instant meal.  It even had the cheese in it.

I have backpacked over 2000 miles and I have to say that even out on the trail, a week from town, I hate Mountain House! Even when I am miles from anywhere, starvingly hungry, and desperate, it still tastes awful and more than once I've gone hungry rather than eat it. Just my two cents--if you like it, go for it--I don't have any of these meals in my preps.

Ok, I have some questions about freeze dried foods. I am not sure why people would buy them over regular canned meals/foods that are much cheaper? I know they have a longer shelf life, but if you are buying things you are going to eat anyway and keep your stock rotated, why buy freeze dried food? I guess I am just not getting it. Please tell me why this is better than just buying regular canned goods? Thanks in advance for sharing!

Freeze Dried Foods along with Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) are very easy to transport in case of an emergency.  Canned foods tend to be a little more bulky and heavy than the Freeze Dried Foods and Meals Ready to Eat (MREs).

Quite often the Freeze Dried Foods and Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) are used for camping trips because they are lightweight and durable.  Freeze Dried Foods tend to have a longer shelf-life the Meals Ready to Eat (MREs), but MREs are by far the easiest to prepare.

In the case of an emergency, Freeze Dried Foods and some canned foods require rehydration with boiling water or heating.  Meals Ready to Eat (MREs) are precooked items that require no rehydratoin or heating; they can be eaten cold.  If you purchase the full meals, you actually get a water activated MRE heater that allows you to have a convenient hot meal virtually anywhere.

Several places to purchase preparedness food items include:

MRE (Meals Ready to Eat)
Food Ration Bars
Canned Food (meat, butter, cheese)

MRE (Meals Ready to Eat)
Food Ration Bars
Freeze Dried Food
Other Emergency Items

Just this morning we tried Mountain House's Scrambled eggs with Ham. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The eggs were grainy, but I could definitely eat them if I had to. We bought 11 cans of various dehydrated foods because of the incredibly long shelf life. I also bought them for variety. I racked my brains trying to come up with enough variety from storing canned goods and couldn't do it. We have a freezer that is full, but if the power goes down we'll have to bury all of it. How long would you want to live off of soups, canned chicken and tuna, peanut butter, and canned fruits? How can you make a meal out of this stuff? This is lunch food and we bought dehydrated in order to have some meals. It's far better than starving. We have a couple more 2 person meals to try this week. I want to know what I'm in for ahead of time. We also have dehydrated mixed vegetables to add to stews. These taste much better than any veggies out of a can.

I am not saying Honeyville is the best...I don't remember
where their home base is...but they have what I need. At this stage we have no favorites. I also bought at Amazon.
the price was close, but the containers were smaller. However, I could not find the product elsewhere. I know money is important, but the end result of using the product you want tips the scale.

where would you say is the best place to buy powdered mash potatoes? I'm looking for good taste, good price and in a can. I don't like the boxes because bugs end up in them somehow unless the eggs were already in the box. that happened to me once and I haven't bought any since but if things got bad I'd hate to be without my potatoes:O)

Mountain home is the leading whole - out and away - for freeze dried survival and carry for several years. Mountain home is merely the simplest alternative for future food storage and emergency preparation, likewise as for alternative recreational activities like carry, hunting, camping, hiking, etc.
