Hello all! I am new to this site, so forgive me if I ask questions that have already been answered. First off, my name is Cassie, and I am a 22 year old mother of 2. I am currently...well....panicked about Brid Flu, and I want to start prepping, just in case. I have anxiety as it is, but now it's all I cna think about. I have started to buy water and canned foods, but I have a few questions.
1. Are chances for survival good if my family and I stay inside 100% of the time? Can we have open windows?
2. Any idea as to how many will become infected?
3. Should I stockpile Tamiflu? Or will I not need it, since I will be inside?
4. How long should I plan to be in my home?
I know I have more, but I will start with these. Thanks so much, everyone!

Cassie, go to the survival tips threads, many pages of info on how to prep.
As for your questions, to be truthful, we don't know a certain answer to any of them. |

Hi Cassie, Welcome!
First off, Don't Panic! It's hard to start out: so many things to think about. You are doing the right thing by buying water and canned food. I don't know what situation you are in, but the more water, the better: ideal is a gallon at least a day for each person. Other folks may have more information on this.
As to food: buy what you eat, but buy more of it. Think about staying home with your family for maybe as long as 8 weeks to start. Right now, there is not a very clear idea of how long you'll need to stay home, but that is a good starting point: you can add more time at home and more food as you learn more and decide what is right for you.
Some people think that they will need to stay home for 2-4 weeks, other people think 12-18 months. You see? That's because we don't really know what *type* of pandemic it will be, if it happens.
The main thing is: start out.
The idea is: stay home if you can help it and don't get sick. There are no guarantees, but, if you follow good procedure: don't have visitors, don't go out, sanitize, wash your hands, etc, you will decrease your chances of getting sick.
Nobody knows if Tamiflu will work against the strain of flu that becomes pandemic, whether this one or the next. Tamiflu is comforting to have, but you should think of it as "the Alamo". The last stand, if and only if, you get sick with Avian Flu despite your precautions. Some people have insisted that they have it, others do not.
Lots to think about!
As Tnbebo said, read up around the site: it will help give you perspective, it may scare you: don't worry, that's how many people who are well prepared started out. And ask all the questions you like: that's what we are all here for: to help each other!

Cassie,
It's easy to get overwhelmed. Just start small, doing some GENERAL prepping. The mormons teach a LOT about this and it's a lifestyle to them. As you become more prepared in GENERAL you will begin to feel better :-)
I wouldn't focus too much on BF itself as there is so much we do not know yet...but...do begin to prepare your family in GENERAL for a variety of emergencies and begin to develop a lifestyle where you are not so vulnerable :-)

Thank you all! I will be doing a lot of looking around on this site, as my family isn't taking this as seriously as I am. It's good to have others to plan with. Best wishes to all!

Hi, Cassie. Welcome aboard. To answer your questions 1. yes and yes 2. Nobody knows (could be as high as 75% based on current virus) 3. Probably not, Difficult to get and nobody knows the doasage. WHO is just now starting a study to answer that question. 4. Nobody knows. Red Cross says 10 days for any emergency. Dr.Webster who is probably the foremost authority on the virus says at least 3 months. Secty. Leavitt said he personally has prepped for 3 months. You will decide that later. Right now you're starting, that is the most important thing. Here you can find some food lists with long shelf life. Customize them to fit your family. Before you spend a penny: Buy only what you eat and eat what you buy! In times of stress, it is not a good idea to give the body new foods to get used to. www.planforflu.com/survial_grocery_list www.lacetoleather.com/hom.html Anything we can do to help, to speed the learning process, please, don't hesitate to ask. By the way, one gallon of water per person per day, is bare minimum subsistance. Plan on 2 so you have some minimum water for cooking and washing. Don't forget toilets. Consider your living situation. Where will your water come from?? Water is your number 1 item. Without sufficient water you die in a very short period of time! |
