EdwinSm, maybe this link answers your question ? Extreme low temperatures in my opinion has to be linked somehow with an low temperature surface. A winter in North America or Europe needs ice in the polar regions/Greenland to bring temperatures down. The jetstream is a means of transportation for temperatures (and wind, rain etc "weather") so when the jetstream gets disturbed you get wierd weather with snow in the Sahara and above zero temperatures in Greenland. this link gives up-to-date info on temperatures anomaly etc. Just also a reminder that what we take for "normal weather" is based at best at data from the last 100/150 years mostly. Of course tree-rings, sediments, ice-samples tell astory over a (much) longer period. But in a period of a 150 years humans grew from to over ! With that kind of population growth a species becomes very vulnarable.
