There is a lot of talk about using guns for protection, but once you draw a gun on a person, you have seriously committed yourself to a split second life/death decision -
Are there any effective legal non-lethal alternatives? I have seen where law enforcement entities can buy 12 gauge shells that fire rubber pellets & bean bags, etc.
I am aware you can purchase all sorts of pepper sprays & tasers, etc.
Any other ideas for items legally available to individuals for self defense?

If it comes down to having to protect yourself and supplies from people who are trying to take them from you, then you have to use whatever force nessasary to stop them.
If you ever have to pull a gun on someone, and you hesitate, you may wind up dead. For those who are wanting them, will not hesitate to kill you.
If you tell them to stop and go away, they will be better prepared when they come back.
After taking out the first three or four, it will get eaiser........

a bean bag gun. or a real gun, if they want your stuff so bad that
theyd steal from someone else who needs them, they deserve to die.

Rubber bullets, bean bags, mace, pepper sprays, tazers and dirty looks will only tick perps off. When they find out that those are all you have, you're had!

I agree with 2if but it will still be hard to shoot someone.
Maybe when the time comes we will have a differant mindset. Even
if you chase them away you're just sending them to rob someone else.
Remember in the movies how the bad guy keeps coming back?
So Kool and 2if are right--shoot first and shoot straight. |

I found an answer for 40. Build a catapult. Procure a large bunch of
live chickens now. Freeze them whole feathers and all. When the bad
guys come lob a few chickens their way.
I'm actually thinking of doing just that. Or at least hang a few on the front fence. I have to get rid of these chickens and guineas somehow anyway. |

I know we need to get a shotgun, but I've been waffling on the idea.
Hubby almost fell off his chair laughing when I came home with slingshots. |

Hi,oknut, we bought sling shots too. We have been practicing with them. Actually they are a lot of fun. They bring back a lot of great childhood memories. Now as far as a weapon I'm not so sure. I have become a pretty good shot.

For those of you that do have 12 gauge shotguns you can get bird banger
shells on the internet. What they do is jump out about 200 ft and
make a big bang. Would make someone think twice about coming up the
drive. Might be a good non lethal defense. Get some cherry bombs
if legal in your area and use in the sling shots like we did as kids.
Think someone sneaking up to you. Pop a parachute flare and fire
some shots their way. Gather old oil from gas stations and use it to
make the driveway slippery. (not a good enviromental thing but this is
war) Get some eggs now and set them in the sunshine to get
rotten. Carefully shoot them in the slingshots or throw them. Stinky
garbage piled outside the doors would make someone think twice. If you
can find a place to buy it get some carbon disulfide. its the chemical
that makes rotten eggs smell rotten. we learned this in high school and
got in a little trouble. snicker.
In other words do not make the place look like a fort that is guarding something. Make it look like a place where no one wants to be or investigate. |

I have firing lanes marked out. I will put up signs telling people to come no closer without permission. If they do, I will assume they are up to no good. And if it moves....... it dies.

in a word, no. non lethal weapons are notoriously unreliable. in the sort of situation that we are envisioning here, you are just taking your life into your hands. essentially what you are doing is finding a way to piss off the people who are about to become the most important people in your life.
not to mention that anything coming oput of a shotgun is going to be lethal at short range. just not reliably so. pat |

The PM function is being worked on. It should back up within 48 hours. Here's Albert's post: http://www.avianflutalk.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=7706 .
BTW, I can picture you approaching intruders, hair tousled, dark circles under your eyes from lack of sleep, a scrawney dead chicken strung from your neck and yelling "I haven't bathed in 15 years and ya STILL want some of this?!?!"

getting hit by a frozen chicken could be lethal!
reminds me of a story that an engineer at an aerospace company was testing birdstrike damage on a jet in development by firing frozen turkeys at the windshield and leading wing edges. . . . duuuuhhhhhhh . . .

2if you are so funny. But don't forget I'll be carrying a shotgun too with pistols etc strapped to me.
Reminded me of Treasure Island with the old guy that was marooned there. More rain here. Please send donations we are building a boat 100 cubits X 300 cubits. A cubit is a metric yard. |

So if I do shoot someone what do i do with the body or
bodies? Will the local police, military or whoever is in
charge try to arrest homeowners who are protecting themselves?
I'm sure others are thinking the same. Can we get honest answers and
who do we talk to now to find out when and if?

Its so hard to dig here in Missouri. Even with my backhoe I can only go
down about 2 1/2 ft on this place. Another thought is I don't
want to touch anyone as they may be infected.
As a group this question should be put to each state goverment and see what they answer. What do you think Advisor? Can this be done? |

If they are hunting sling shots, get you self some larger ball bearings. If you are a good shot, You can blow a man's head off with one. Very silent killer and darn effective. A very light wight weapon that you can also use to hunt rabbits or squirrel with.

try a medieval sling, they take a lot of practice for proficiency, but they make a great subsistance tool, and were one of the classical weapons of war. you can get a ball mold made so you can cast your own shot. i had a 1 inch mold made for mine but you can also use round creek stones, or in a pinch anything you can fit into the pocket. i have made both leather and woven wool models.
sort of lends a new meaning to the phrase "he's got big balls". pat |

I read on one of the older threads to use hornet spray as a weapon, since it shoots a long distance. I won't have a problem shooting someone with a gun, but hornet spray is on my list of things still to get.

DITTO!!! It is better to be judged by twelve, than carried by six. In a no holds barred situation like the worst case scenario, thieves and perps are going to be in a desperate frame of mind and will not be bargained with. They will steal anything you have to help themselves with little regard to what you think. Granted there are other methods of personal protection, but when TSHTF desperate times will call for desperate measures and it is better to be safe than sorry!

Sam, I found that one and did search. Cannot find out what Missouri has
in mind for us if the manure hits the Westinghousel They'd
love me as my place looks like the base camp for the 5th army or
something.
I read today that the birds came back to Europe disease free. Has the BF disappeared like SARS did? Read ThePoultrySite.com Yet we talked to a recent immigrant from china today we ran across in Springfield, Mo She swears people are catching the bird flu from each other and dying quick. My wife questioned her extensively. Whole families are dying according to her. Of course these may just be rumours from one person to another. I'm hesitant to believe her but she is convinced. So I went out and bought a full state of the art security camera system for the place. its ure fun to spend money. Mike |

Two, Have you ever tried to eat a guinea? I pressure cooked one for 30
minutes to try it. I gave it to the dog. NASTY!! The thread
started with how to keep the bad guys away without shooting them. It
was just one idea to throw chickens at them.
although if you are offering to help I love canned chicken with noodles. Of course we have to make egg noodles before we butcher the chickens. The thick, fat ,stick a fork in kind, I like the best. Now I'm hungry. |

I've spent so far and what I intend to spend once we get conformation
on human to human transmission; you'll be floored.

Actually after searching the net I stopped into Radio Shack in
Spingfield and found just what I wanted. Yes the cameras have IR.
Its only a 4 camera system -prefer 6 - but I think it will work.
I'm pretty sure I can convert it to 12V although will have to buy a 12v
TV. The whole system won't be much over $700.
Come help me hook it up 2if. God forbid I have to read instructions. |

to 2 ifbyC Johnny you still alive? I haven't seen you
around. We've gone a long way in out prepping. i think my sister
finally say the light and has agreed to get more serious about moving
in here. Of course she says she does not have to prep cause I am and
I'm paying for it all.
