This was on Facebook thought I might try at school....LOL except for the smell may kill the idea. Anyone know if this is true or have tried it?

ONIONS! I had never heard this!!!
PLEASE READ TO THE END: IMPORTANT

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu...
Many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died.

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser. She said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with the flu, and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:

Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer's story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia, and, needless to say, I was very ill... I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar, and place the jar next to the sick patient at night. It said the onion would be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better.

Another thing I read in the article was that onions and garlic placed around the room saved many from the black plague years ago. They have powerful antibacterial, antiseptic properties.

This is the other note. Lots of times when we have stomach problems we don't know what to blame. Maybe it's the onions that are to blame. Onions absorb bacteria is the reason they are so good at preventing us from getting colds and flu and is the very reason we shouldn't eat an onion that has been sitting for a time after it has been cut open.

LEFT OVER ONIONS ARE POISONOUS

I had the wonderful privilege of touring Mullins Food Products, Makers of mayonnaise. Questions about food poisoning came up, and I wanted to share what I learned from a chemist.

Ed, who was our tour guide, is a food chemistry whiz. During the tour, someone asked if we really needed to worry about mayonnaise. People are always worried that mayonnaise will spoil. Ed's answer will surprise you. Ed said that all commercially-made mayo is completely safe.

"It doesn't even have to be refrigerated. No harm in refrigerating it, but it's not really necessary." He explained that the pH in mayonnaise is set at a point that bacteria could not survive in that environment. He then talked about the summer picnic, with the bowl of potato salad sitting on the table, and how everyone blames the mayonnaise when someone gets sick.

Ed says that, when food poisoning is reported, the first thing the officials look for is when the 'victim' last ate ONIONS and where those onions came from (in the potato salad?). Ed says it's not the mayonnaise (as long as it's not homemade mayo) that spoils in the outdoors. It's probably the ONIONS, and if not the onions, it's the POTATOES.

He explained onions are a huge magnet for bacteria, especially uncooked onions. You should never plan to keep a portion of a sliced onion.. He says it's not even safe if you put it in a zip-lock bag and put it in your refrigerator.

It's already contaminated enough just by being cut open and out for a bit, that it can be a danger to you (and doubly watch out for those onions you put in your hotdogs at the baseball park!). Ed says if you take the leftover onion and cook it like crazy you'll probably be okay, but if you slice that leftover onion and put on your sandwich, you're asking for trouble. Both the onions and the moist potato in a potato salad, will attract and grow bacteria faster than any commercial mayonnaise will even begin to break down.

Also, dogs should never eat onions. Their stomachs cannot metabolize onions.

Please remember it is dangerous to cut an onion and try to use it to cook the next day, it becomes highly poisonous for even a single night and creates toxic bacteria which may cause adverse stomach infections because of excess bile secretions and even food poisoning.

Please pass this on to all you love and care about.
Always Be Prepared

That's quite the anecdotal story.
Couple of things, first there was no way for anyone in 1919 to observe an influenza virus under a microscope which just decapitates the whole thing right from the beginning (Lie).

Second that would be some medical device breakthrough, something you can grow in your backyard place in the room and it has some invisible power to extract virus/bacteria from a few feet away through the air (That's Amazing). Im assuming this new medical breathrough leaves behind the good bacteria since the folks were all healthy so it only targets the bad bacteria-this is truly amazing.

Onions are healthy for you no doubt, but I am not sure Im ready to jump off that cliff. Either way though Im good always have a bag of onions in the house.

What about Garlic??

I know for a fact that my grandparents ate a raw onion with a chunk of cheese every single night of their lives just before they went to bed. My father told me that they ate this sitting up in bed. Neither of them were ever ill. My grandmother used to lay out the dead in their village, and help with births and she was spry and vital until her dying day.

They both lived through the Spanish flu.

I have also made a cough syrup from a cut onion and sugar and it was very effective.
If it is to be, it is up to me.

This reminds me of the movie/book "Holes" where the people ate the onions to keep them safe from the lizards biting them. people do use onions in salves though so there could be truth in it.
Be prepared! It may be time....^_^v

I think this answers the question.

ALSO, I'd like to say that Turbo has me confused with somebody else.  I never knew when you left the forum or why.  I never complained about you to anyone.  I also did not laugh about your absense afterwards.  Turbo is greatly mistaken in this regard.  I'm not saying that I liked you either because, frankly, I don't.

Welcome back Elver.  I can't believe that all 3 of you have been here 5 - 7 years and you're not getting along.

Let's just all move forward.  We've been here way too long together.

Elver, my statement was about influenza A Virus (H1N1 1918). Influenza A virus is well under the visible range of any (ANY) standard microscope and wasn't isolated under a microscope until the 1930's when a version of the Electron microscope first hit the scene. This is a given not a guess, are there larger viruses, sure there a many different viruses around the world and some are large enough to be visible under a traditional microscope but not Influenza A which is what this particular wives tale insists happened

Stick around Elver and let's forget about everything.  The problem is here, unlike other forums, is that we deal specifically with a severe flu pandemic, which is a fairly rare event.  And in the summer months, the topic is usually extra slow.  Because of this we tend to get into touchy off topic discussions from time to time around here, as you know.  I wouldn't worry about the arguments that have taken place in the past as we're all on the same team.  This will be the #1 site during the next pandemic and it's important to set aside the differences.  I can assure you, should the next pandemic be a bad one, we'll all be stuck together here like glue and we'll all have valuable input to contribute, including turbo. Wink

Anyway Elver, you've been here a long time and we consider you a valued member.  So stick around and let's move forward.   If things ever get too heated around here and out of hand, feel free to email me at Albert@avianflutalk.com.  And that goes for everybody.

You also just said something not too favorable to Mahshadin and he took it pretty good.

Best to all,

Albert

Mahshadin,

You're such an asshole and always will be.

I wasn't trying to contradict you or agree with you.

I was simply pasting a link to flu virus discoveries & nothing more.

You are exactly 1 reason why I can't stand this forum any longer.

Back to the original subject onions, as I stated earlier onions are very healthy. I eat them raw and cooked almost every day. Funny thing about onions though is not all are as healthy as you think. Stick with the Standard Yellow and Red. Also many of the benefits are near the surface or skin so try not to throw to much of it out when your cutting it up. Garlic (Same Plant Family and Benefits) is quite a bit better than onion which I always use daily (Fresh). Usually when I feel a cold or flu or even a soar throat I will take a clove slice it up across the center about a tenth of an inch thick and put one in each cheek and just leave them in there tucked away for half hour then chew and swallow (Warning Not For The Meek), Im Italian so makes perfect sense. As a cough suppressant I chop up onion (Very Small-almost past) add manuka honey stir and take a teaspoon in mouth and let it slowly drift down your throat.

Onions are Beneficial for Your Health

What would life be like without onions? The onion has been used as an ingredient in various dishes for thousands of years by many cultures around the world. World onion production is steadily increasing so that onion is now the second most important horticultural crop after tomatoes.

There are many different varieties of onion, red, yellow, white, and green, each with their own unique flavor, from very strong to mildly sweet. Onions can be eaten raw, cooked, fried, dried or roasted. They are commonly used to flavor dips, salads, soups, spreads, stir-fry and other dishes.

Onions (Allium cepa) belong to the lily family, the same family as garlic, leeks, chives, scallions and shallots. There are over 600 species of Allium, distributed all over Europe, North America, Northern Africa and Asia. The plants can be used as ornamentals, vegetables, spices, or as medicine. There are over 120 different documented uses of the Alliums.

Onion and other Allium vegetables are characterized by their rich content of thiosulfinates, sulfides, sulfoxides, and other odoriferous sulfur compounds. The cysteine sulfoxides are primarily responsible for the onion flavor and produce the eye-irritating compounds that induce lacrimation. The thiosulfinates exhibit antimicrobial properties. Onion is effective against many bacteria including Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella, and E. coli. Onion is not as potent as garlic since the sulfur compounds in onion are only about one-quarter the level found in garlic.

The Value of Onions

Onions have a variety of medicinal effects. Early American settlers used wild onions to treat colds, coughs, and asthma, and to repel insects. In Chinese medicine, onions have been used to treat angina, coughs, bacterial infections, and breathing problems.

The World Health Organization (WHO) supports the use of onions for the treatment of poor appetite and to prevent atherosclerosis. In addition, onion extracts are recognized by WHO for providing relief in the treatment of coughs and colds, asthma and bronchitis. Onions are known to decrease bronchial spasms. An onion extract was found to decrease allergy-induced bronchial constriction in asthma patients.

Onions are a very rich source of fructo-oligosaccharides. These oligomers stimulate the growth of healthy bifidobacteria and suppress the growth of potentially harmful bacteria in the colon. In addition, they can reduce the risk of tumors developing in the colon.

Cardiovascular Help

Onions contain a number of sulfides similar to those found in garlic which may lower blood lipids and blood pressure. In India, communities that never consumed onions or garlic had blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels substantially higher, and blood clotting times shorter, than the communities that ate liberal amounts of garlic and onions. Onions are a rich source of flavonoids, substances known to provide protection against cardiovascular disease. Onions are also natural anticlotting agents since they possess substances with fibrinolytic activity and can suppress platelet-clumping. The anticlotting effect of onions closely correlates with their sulfur content.

Cancer Prevention

Onion extracts, rich in a variety of sulfides, provide some protection against tumor growth. In central Georgia where Vidalia onions are grown, mortality rates from stomach cancer are about one-half the average level for the United States. Studies in Greece have shown a high consumption of onions, garlic and other allium herbs to be protective against stomach cancer.

Chinese with the highest intake of onions, garlic, and other Allium vegetables have a risk of stomach cancer 40 percent less than those with the lowest intake. Elderly Dutch men and women with the highest onion consumption (at least one-half onion/day) had one-half the level of stomach cancer compared with those consuming no onions at all.

Western Yellow, New York Bold, and Northern Red onions have the richest concentration of flavonoids and phenolics, providing them with the greatest antioxidant and anti-proliferative activity of 10 onions tested. The mild-tasting Western White and Vidalia onions had the lowest antioxidant content and lowest anti-proliferative activity. The consumer trend to increasingly purchase the less pungent, milder onion varieties may not be the best, since the onions with a stronger flavor and higher astringency appear to have superior health-promoting properties.

Use and Safety

Onions have a universal appeal. They are safely consumed by most people. However, consuming large quantities of onions can lead to stomach distress and gastrointestinal irritation that may result in nausea and diarrhea. There are no known interactions with drugs except that they can potentiate the action of anticoagulants.

Conclusion

Onions, and other Allium species, are highly valued herbs possessing culinary and medicinal value. Some of their beneficial properties are seen after long-term usage. Onion may be a useful herb for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, especially since they diminish the risk of blood clots. Onion also protects against stomach and other cancers, as well as protecting against certain infections. Onion can improve lung function, especially in asthmatics. The more pungent varieties of onion appear to possess the greatest concentration of health-promoting phytochemicals.

Albert, I will never be done with the vaccine issue.  It is something that I'm passionate about just as Turbo is passionate about his guns.  If you and others don't agree with me regarding the safety of vaccines, then argue your point rather than ridiculing or trying to dismiss me and others out of hand.  Don't just dismiss the tons of arguments that I've already made here simply because you disagree.  I have no problem with people disagreeing when they post something to back it up rather than their usual summary statement telling me that vaccines are proven to be safe.  These people, Turbo in particular, should post some studies that suggest that.  I thought this was a "FORUM" where we could discuss things pertaining to the "FLU", or have I been incorrect all these years?  Don't vaccines pertain to the flu?  How does Turbo's constant posts about his guns constitute something that is more related to the flu than the vaccine issue does?  I'm not anti-gun, by the way, just making a point.

A new member here was tarred and feathered not long ago for his anti-vaccine beliefs and then run out on a rail because one of your female admin people didn't agree with him.  She tried to shut down his posts by summarily telling him that everyone's tired of hearing it and then labeled him a "TROLL".  Whose the real troll?  (A troll is somebody who is short and snarky just like that admin was.)  (A troll is someone whose posts are consistently belittling, rather than intelligent objections and points.)  Gee, I don't know of anyone who fits this description more than Turbo does regarding the anti-vaccine posts.   Go back and read my vaccine posts to see his reponses and you'll know what I'm talking about.  Well, perhaps some are tired of hearing it, but then they can read other posts on this forum  instead, can't they?  This guy who left was kind enough to send me a 116 page power point that he put together with overwhelming evidence regarding the dangers of vaccines.  This guy posted material that could have been debated, but instead was summarily dismissed by your admin person, not Turbo, but someone else at the time.  All I can say about this report is OMG!  You will never know what's in it because you apparently don't care to know.

The flu vaccine is not necessary for healthy adults, period.  Healthy adults are far better off getting the flu and getting immunity to that strain for years if not a lifetime.  I pose this scenario to you.  We're both in our 80's, but you get a flu shot that doesn't cover the particular strain that is going around that year, but I had that actual strain years before, who do you think would have better protection from the flu, you or me?  I'm quite sure that I would.  In fact there's some information out there which states that if you've had the H1N1 virus that you might have superimmunity to this flu and I've posted that as well a while back.  Although I wasn't diagnosed with H1N1 because I never go to the doctor when I have the flu, but I firmly believe that I had this in 2009.  It was absolutely the worst flu of my life and I posted about that too.  (In fact I post about lots of stuff that isn't vaccine related, so why do you and your admin's pick on that particular subject?)  So, who's better protected going forward, someone who constantly gets flu shots or me?  And I don't have time right now to go over all the things that I've posted previously about the junk that is in flu shots, suffice to say that this stuff isn't good for you and the CDC knows this!

I thought a forum was an open space designated for public discussion on subjects.  Is this not the type of forum that you are running?  Isn't this forum open for public discussion regarding all aspects of the flu including flu shots?  If not, why then do you allow all sorts of political posts as well.  Why should I have to be "done" with my point on flu vaccines?  I keep finding new information all the time, some of it from the CDC's own website!  When I think it is important or interesting I like to share it.  Is everyone on this forum so closed minded that they don't want to read about contradictory information regarding the safety and efficacy of flu shots or do you speak for them also?

If you want to silence me and others who agree with me (through your admin's) about the safety and efficacy of flu shots because you are pushing your own pro-vaccine agenda, then just say the word and I'm gone for good.  It seems as if this forum isn't open to ideas other than the ones of yourself and your administrators anyway.

If your admin's can't respectfully disagree and if they can't come up with opposing information to the contrary instead of their arbitrary and capricious standard practice of ridicule and dismissal, then they shouldn't be your admin's!  Perhaps they have the agenda of a troll.

"The purpose of a troll is not to intelligently discuss various issues but to minimize the importance of dissenting opinions by ridiculing serious participants expressing political views the troll finds objectionable."

So, I ask you this.  Will you or will you not allow me and others to post our opinions on this subject matter without being constantly subjected to ridicule?  Will you or will you not tell your admin people to stand down on this practice unless they can factually disagree with more than ridicule or a summary statement to the contrary?

It's your forum.  All you have to do is tell me that this forum is closed on the subject of anti-vaccine material and I'm out of here!  Based on the treatment that I've received from several people here I'm not sure I want to stay anyway.  I have always treated everyone with decency and respect until they abuse me by calling me names, or being ridiculed for having different beliefs.  About my "not to favorable" comment to Mahshadin, that guy has called me names and just been plain nasty to me more times than I care to count.  If you don't agree with him he gets beligerant as you saw above when he said "please do your homework before attempting to blast someone with BS"  I was not trying to blast anyone with BS, but he always succeeds in blasting me back in some way.  I'm sick of him and Turbo, specifically.

I didn't know if Mahshadin was right or wrong because he didn't post anything to back up his summary statement above.  I researched virus and microscopes and simply pasted the link above.  It seemed to me that my link backed up Mahshadin's statement, not shot it down.  But, it never fails that he wants to perceive something the wrong way and then makes another summary statement by telling me that I attempted "to blast someone with BS".  Well, at least I posted some factual information which is way more than he did.
