Dr. Andrea Gambotto announced the genetically engineered vaccine in January, saying it protected 100 percent of mice and chickens tested with a strain of avian flu that has affected poultry and people in Asia.
Earlier this month, the National Institutes of Health gave Gambotto the two-year grant to create test batches of the vaccine to be used in clinical trials, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Friday.
There is currently no commercially available bird flu vaccine for people.
