Chrome a serious challenger in browser battle
By David Pogue Published: September 4, 2008

Does the world really need another Web browser? Google thinks so. Chrome, its new browser, was developed in secrecy and released to the world Tuesday. The Windows version is available for download now at google.com/chrome; the Mac and Linux versions will take a little longer.

Google Earth in Sky Viewing Mode in Windows Vista
In version 4.2, released August 22, 2007,

Google Earth added a Sky tool for viewing stars and astronomical images.[8]

Google Sky is produced by Google through a partnership with the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Alberto Conti and his co-developer Dr. Carol Christian of the Space Telescope Science Institute plan to add the public images from 2007,[9] as well as color images of all of the archived data from Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Newly released Hubble pictures will be added to the Google Sky program as soon as they are issued.

New features such as multi-wavelength data, positions of major satellites and their orbits as well as educational resources will be provided to the Google Earth community and also through Christian and Conti's website for Sky. Also visible on Sky mode are constellations, stars, galaxies and animations depicting the planets in their orbits.

A real-time Google Sky mashup of recent astronomical transients, using the VOEvent protocol, is being provided by the VOEventNet collaboration.Google's Earth maps are being updated each 5 minutes.
Google Sky will face competition [1] from the upcoming product WorldWide Telescope from Microsoft, anticipated soon [10].

On March 13, 2008 Google made a web-based version of Google Sky available at

I never heard of this lettuce and beef thing... I don't watch a lot of tv.

ProMED-mail is a program of the
International Society for Infectious Diseases
<http://www.isid.org>

Date: Fri 26 Sep 2008
Source: Michigan State University News [edited]
<http://news.msu.edu/story/5678/>

Public health officials, with support from MSU (Michigan State
University), have identified a brand of lettuce as the source of the
recent multi-statewide outbreak of _E. coli_ [O157], an outbreak that
sickened a number of MSU students.

The lettuce, which had been distributed nationally by Detroit-based
vendor Aunt Mid's Produce Company, is identified as shredded and
chopped iceberg lettuce. The affected lettuce products were
immediately removed from MSU's dining halls, even though there have
been no new cases with symptom onset reported at the university since
20 Sep 2008.

"We will continue to be as cautious as possible, until this issue is
completely resolved," said MSU University physician Beth Alexander.

On Fri 26 Sep 2008, the Michigan Department of Community Health
reported 26 cases of genetically linked _E. coli_ were spread
throughout 8 Michigan counties. In addition, that same strain has
also been identified in cases in Illinois, New York, Ohio, and
Oregon. Health officials said it was the out-of-state cases that
helped to track down a common distributor of the affected food.

During the week of 22 Sep 2008 MSU made the decision to temporarily
discontinue the service of all cooked turkey products, although state
and local health officials did not recommend it. While turkey had not
been determined as the source of the outbreak, health officials were
considering it an "item of interest." Turkey products are now being
offered again in MSU's dining halls.

As part of the effort to trace the source of the outbreak, MSU
students were asked to take part in a case control study. On Thursday
[25 Sep 2008] afternoon, more than 4000 questionnaires were sent to
students in Akers, Holmes, and Hubbard halls, asking them to outline
their food-eating habits for the last 3 weeks. In less than 24 hours,
more than 400 students responded to the call.

ProMED-mail
<promed@promedmail.org>

[In the above newswire it does not specifically mention that the
outbreak strain has been isolated from the "smoking" lettuce,
although there is a suggestion that more maybe known -- "Health
officials said it was the out-of-state cases that helped to track
down a common distributor of the affected food."  The case-control
study has presumably identified lettuce as the significant common
exposure in Michigan. More information is needed about the lettuce
regarding its original source, contamination source and the scope of
its distribution. With respect to its distribution, one also wonders
if there will be more cases identified with a wider geographic
distribution or if the presumably contaminated batches have been used
up (past their sell date/use date and likely to have been discarded
by now). - Mods.LL/MPP]

Has anyone installed TED in their Home?

http://www.theenergydetective.com/what/install.html

What is TED?

TED is a simple, yet extremely accurate, home energy monitor that allows you to see electricity usage in real-time. You no longer have to wait for the 'electricity bill surprise'! TED will accurately tell you what your bill is going to be long before the electric bill arrives. Meanwhile, you will learn more about conserving energy, saving money, and helping save the environment.

How do I Install TED?

Installation is very simple and quick. A qualified homeowner or electrician can
install TED in about 10-15 minutes. TED operates on the existing wires in your home,
so there is no need to run any additional wires.

OTC Cold Medicines to Be Relabeled for Young Children

excerpt-

It's the second time in a year that industry has agreed to limit marketing of cold and cough medicine to babies and young children. Last October, industry said it would stop making various "infant" products and would relabel other products to state that they should not be used in children younger than 2.

The move came after an FDA review of the products showed that most safety problems associated with the products were in that age group. The changes affect dozens of brand-name and generic products like /public/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=JNJ - Johnson & Johnson 's Tylenol Plus Cold, /public/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=NVS - Novartis AG's Triaminic and /public/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=WYE - Wyeth 's Robitussin. An estimated 95 million packages of children's over-the-counter cold and cough medicines are sold each year in the U.S.

Shoppers turn to 'salvage' food stores

I shop at a couple of grocery outlets for staple foods. We have an Aldi here (within 30 min), but I haven't tried it yet. Is it really pretty good, as far as quality? I thought it was all "white label" stuff - no brand names, just canned stuff with generic white labels. That thought keeps me out. Tell me more so I can get a different thought in my head about them.
The quality is top-notch. They do carry a lot of their own brands, but they are not white labels. They are actually owned by the same family that owns Trader Joe's. Their riesling wine is the best I've had at any price anywhere and thier beer is good (they are a German company). They have special purchases each week of name brand items and electronics at great prices. I have had nothing but good luck with their Crofton brand (cooking appliances) and Medion (a German company which make computers they sell).

When you go, you must bring a quarter that you insert into the shopping cart to release it. Then when you return the cart and hook it back up, it spits your quarter back out. This saves money on cart personnel as well as people stealing them or messing up your cars.

Also, bring your own bags or a box. You can buy them there, but they are 5 cents for a plastic one and 10 cents for paper. Here is some more info:

ALDI - Special Purchases from March 2, 2008 (broken link) Those McCain Roasters are $3.50 at our normal grocery store.

I may very well get the food processor next week:

Aldi in Bethlehem, PA, USA

Source
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldi

Earliest roots of the company trace back to 1913. When the mother of Karl and Theo Albrecht opened a small store in a suburb of Essen. Their father was employed as a miner and later as a baker's assistant. Karl was born in 1920, Theo in 1922. Theo completed an apprenticeship in his mother's store, while Karl worked in a delicatessen. Karl took over a food shop formerly run by F. W. Judt who already advertised to be the "cheapest food source".

Karl also served in the German Army during World War II. After the end of World War II, the brothers took over their mother's business (1946) and soon opened another retail outlet in the vicinity. By 1950, the Albrecht brothers already owned 13 stores in the Ruhr Valley. -Aldi is presently the 24th largest retailer in the world, one place below the rapidly expanding Woolworths LTD.

The brothers' idea, which was new at the time, was to subtract the then-legal maximum rebate of 3% before sale. The market leaders at the time, which often were co-operatives, required their customers to collect rebate stamps, and to send them in regular intervals to claim their money back. The Albrecht brothers also rigorously removed merchandise that did not sell from their shelves, and squeezed out as much savings as possible by not advertising, not selling fresh produce, and keeping the size of their retail outlets as small as possible.

When the two brothers split the company in 1960 over a dispute whether they should sell cigarettes at the till or not, they owned 300 shops with a cash flow of DM 90 million per year. In 1962, they introduced the Aldi brand name. Both groups are financially and legally separate since 1966, though they describe their relationship as a "friendly relation"; they will also occasionally appear as if they were a single enterprise, for example with certain house brands, or when negotiating with contractor companies.

Aldi expanded internationally in the 1970s and 1980s, the number of outlets skyrocketing, especially after German reunification and the fall of the Iron Curtain. The Albrecht brothers retreated from their positions as CEOs in 1993 and gave most of their wealth to foundations.

National business organization

The Aldi Nord group currently consists of 35 independent regional branches with approximately 2,500 stores. Aldi Sud is made up of 31 companies with 1,600 stores. The border between their territories runs from the Rhine via Mülheim an der Ruhr, Wermelskirchen, Marburg, Siegen and Gießen eastwards up to slightly north of Fulda. Former East Germany is completely served by Aldi Nord, save for a single Aldi Sud store in Sonneberg, Thuringia that is associated with a Bavarian regional office.

The regional branches are organised as limited partnerships with a regional manager for each branch who reports directly to the head office in Essen (Aldi Nord) or Mülheim an der Ruhr (Aldi Sud). The regional distribution centres are usually located away from urban areas, but always near an autobahn to facilitate transporting the merchandise to the individual stores. Aldi Nord, for example, has distribution centres in Bargteheide, Barleben, Beucha, Beverstedt, Datteln, Essen, Greven, Hann. Münden, Hemmoor, Hesel, Herten, Horst, Hoyerswerda, Jarmen, Lehrte, Lingen, Minden, Nortorf, Radevormwald, Rinteln, Salzgitter, Scharbeutz, Schloß Holte, Schwelm, Werl and Weyhe. The coffee roaster of Aldi Nord is also located in Weyhe.

Internationally

The Aldi group operates about 7,600 individual stores worldwide. A new store opens every week.

Aldi Nord is responsible for the markets in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Portugal and Denmark. Aldi Sud caters to the markets of Austria, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Australia, Switzerland and Slovenia. Aldi Sud currently is expanding in Switzerland, where the first stores opened in 2005. Hungary, Greece and Poland are on the short list of countries for further expansion and are expected to see the first openings in 2007.

Whilst Aldi Nord has long renamed its Dutch and Belgian subsidiaries Combi and Lansa to the ALDI Markt/Aldi Marché brand, Aldi Sud tries to keep a regional appearance. Therefore, Aldi Sud explicitly brands its outlets as Aldi Sud in Germany, Aldi Suisse in Switzerland and Hofer in Austria and Slovenia

http://fussmaker.blogspot.com/2006/01/who-owns-trader-joes.html

Who owns Trader Joe's?

Many of my friends shop at Trader Joe's (and so do we). The image Trader Joe's seems to convey, at least locally, is that of a laid back, gen-x run grocery store carrying European treats fit for even a connoisseur, yet at a low cost. Even if the store is slightly disorganized and the stock unpredictable, no one seems bothered. Shopping at Trader Joe's means mostly shopping for treats or pantry accessories, if you will. So if the store is out of cream cheese, it doesn't matter much since the same expectations one has for a run-of-the-mill supermarket don't apply.

It may come as a surprise that this gen-xers' paradise is owned by one of the richest men in the whole entire world. A German businessman in his eighties, Theo Albrecht, co-founder of Aldi Group which stands for "Albrecht Discount," owns Trader Joe's. He and his brother Karl Albrecht founded the Aldi supermarket chain in Germany, which now comprises forty percent of the German grocery market.

Since its start as a small German grocery store in the late 1940's, Aldi has expanded to non-food items like textiles and hardware. It is now Germany's number one computer seller, with 60 percent of that market. The Albrecht brothers also have extensive landholdings in Germany, and in the U.S. hold 7% of Boise, Idaho-based Albertson's supermarkets.

Karl Albrecht is said to be the world's third-richest man, with a fortune estimated at $23 billion by Forbes magazine.

In 1971 Theo Albrecht was kidnapped for seventeen days for a ransom of $4 million. Since then both brothers have kept a very low profile. Aldi Group is a privately held company and is not open to public trading.

Feds warn Carter's baby clothes may cause rash

excerpt-

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The government is warning parents about Carter's Inc. baby garments with tag-less labels after about 400 babies who wore the clothing developed rashes on their backs.

The warning applies to the fall 2007 line, which includes about 110 million garments, said Mary Drayna, a manager for the Atlanta, Georgia, company. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday that children should stop using these garments if they develop a rash, but the agency did not announce a recall of the product line.

Drayna said the affected clothing includes knit items such as body suits, shirts and pajamas. She said the items have prompted about 400 reports of baby rashes, but she could not comment on how serious any of the rashes were or if any required hospital visits.

The garments were made in various foreign countries, and they were sold at Carter's retail stores and at department and national chain stores, according to CPSC. The clothing appeared on the market in fall 2007 and could still be on retail shelves, although Carter's has released other products since then, Drayna said.

Do You Love Stein Mart?
................................................

In the past I have seen some pretty poor offerings in the merchandise here.  In the last year we have had a surge in growth.  I see a lot of hotels going up not far from the university.  I was at Sears and usually shop there for mainly appliances.  I was impressed with the way the merchandise was presented and the quality is better.  This is after places like Target and Khols have done so well in the area.
Target has fallen down in a few areas, they didn't keep up with the original quality.  Beef it back up guys.  I'm pretty bored with our Macy's Store..... One I do like and feel would fly well here is -

STEIN MART.... this store is fun.  We want one.

http://www.steinmart.com/website.nsf/webpages/Home

I bought monkey book ends etc... off beat stuff...fun

They are doing better than some...

Earlier this month Stein mart reported year-to-date sales were down 6.9 percent, and comparable store sales were down 10.3 percent.

Analyst: General Mills could exceed expectations

Posted 13 November 2008 @ 01:55 pm HKT

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- An analyst on Wednesday said General Mills Inc.'s growth abroad is largely positive, despite economic challenges and the maker of Cheerios and Betty Crocker is on track to exceed expectations this year.

Barclays Capital analyst Andrew Lazar wrote in a note to clients Wednesday that the investment firm attended an analyst meeting at the company's headquarters in Minneapolis this week. The meeting discussed, among other things, the company's international business.

Lazar said General Mills' "organic momentum abroad continues to be largely positive" and although foreign exchanges -- such as the growing strength of the U.S. dollar -- could provide headwinds, that should be manageable.

"All in, despite this challenges, we still see General Mills as on track to exceed current management guidance for the full year and to potentially drive further upside in current Street expectations," Lazar wrote.

In September, the Golden Valley, Minn.-based company, known for Yoplait Yogurt and Pillsbury products, reported that revenue rose 14 percent in its first fiscal quarter but that profit fell 4 percent because of high commodity prices. But General Mills raised its full-year profit outlook, saying it now expects sales to grow in the mid-single-digit rate for the year. It expects earnings per share to fall in a range of $3.81 to $3.85, up from its previous range of $3.78 to $3.83 per share.

Analysts are predicting earnings per share of $3.91 in fiscal 2009, according to Thomson Reuters.

During World War II, American servicemen listened to it over the Armed Forces Radio
Services and dreamed of returning home. Even for those who never had known a white Christmas, the sentimental lyrics conjured happy memories of holidays spent with family and friends. The song gained unprecedented popularity, and five years after the first release Crosby recorded it again because -- according to one Hollywood legend -- the master copy was worn out from so much pressing.

Buzz up!on Yahoo! The major press outlets are abuzz this morning with news of a major new security flaw that affects all versions of Internet Explorer from IE5 to the latest beta of IE8. The attack has serious and far-reaching ramifications -- and they're not just theoretical attacks. In fact, the flaw is already in wide use as a tool to steal online game passwords, with some 10,000 websites infected with the code needed to take advantage of the hole in IE.

Virtually all security experts (as well as myself) are counseling users to switch to any other web browser -- none of the others are affected, including Firefox, Chrome, and Opera -- at least for the time being, though Microsoft has stubbornly said it "cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw." Microsoft adds that it is working on a fix but has offered no ETA on when that might happen. Meanwhile it offers some suggestions for a temporary patch, including setting your Internet security zone settings to "high" and offering some complicated workarounds. (Some reports state, however, that the fixes do not actually work.)

Expedient patching or switching are essential. Security pros fear that the attack will soon spread beyond the theft of gaming passwords and into more criminal arenas, as the malicious code can be placed on any website and can be adapted to steal any password stored or entered using the browser. It's now down to the issue of time: Will Microsoft repair the problem and distribute a patch quickly enough to head off the tsunami of fraud that's about to hit or will it come too late to do any good?

Meanwhile, I'll reiterate my recommendation: Switch from Internet Explorer as soon as you can. You can always switch back once the threat is eliminated.

Chinese Authorities Enforce Switch from Microsoft

2008-12-02

Internet cafes in China are forced to switch to a Chinese-made operating system, with steep licensing fees.

UPDATED DEC. 3, 12:46 EST

HONG KONG—Authorities in the southeastern Chinese city of Nanchang are requiring all local Internet cafes to replace their Microsoft Windows XP operating systems with a Chinese-made system, Red Flag Linux, according to officials and Internet cafe owners.

An official with the Nanchang Cultural Discipline Team, which oversees the roughly 600 Internet cafes operating in Nanchang city, said the new operating systems were mandatory.

“We have already started installing the new software in all Internet cafes. All of them must have this new one,” the official said.

...the owners will likely reinstall Windows to make their customers happy."

Bill Xia, Dynamic Internet Technology

The switch was mandated by the Nanchang Cultural Management Bureau in what it said was an effort to crack down on pirated software, local sources said.

But cafe managers said the new system requires a licensing fee of 5,000 yuan (about U.S. $726), and that even legitimate, non-pirated copies of Windows XP were being replaced.

“Our district cultural management authorities came and installed the new Red Flag Linux in all of our 13 Internet cafes,” one cafe worker said.

“It happened around Nov. 20, and we all paid the 5,000 yuan installation fee, even though we used to use legally purchased Windows XP. But I don’t think this new system is as good as the old one.”

A new, legitimate copy of Windows XP costs around 899 yuan (about U.S. $130) in China, plus 15 yuan for shipping.

Similar moves touted in official press

Whether Nanchang authorities were enforcing an order from higher up, and whether the directive might apply elsewhere in China, wasn’t immediately clear.

But reports in China’s official media indicate that Internet cafes in other cities have also switched to Red Flag Linux, with positive coverage in the official press.

It mainly means [a] less secure and private communication environment for netizens in those Internet cafes."

Xiao Qiang, UC-Berkeley

On Aug. 11, 2006, China Computer Journal reported that, after a July 28, 2006 conference in Fuzhou, “relevant leaders from Fuzhou toured a Red Flag Linux promotion Internet cafe. More than 100 computers at this Internet cafe, which is located in the center of the city, have installed the Red Flag Linux software.”

It quoted the manager as saying that “the installation of the Red Flag Linux software has greatly enhanced the stability and security of his system, and that virus attacks, which had caused great damage in the past, have dropped to virtually zero.”

And on Dec. 11, 2007, an official Web site known as “It Experts” reported that Red Flag Linux “satisfactorily resolved many of the problems plaguing the more than 200 Internet cafes in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, in terms of security, cost-effectiveness, screen clarity, user-friendliness, etc.”

Unwelcome move

An Internet cafe owner surnamed Chen said the switch was unwelcome. “Every Internet cafe has to install the new software though none of us wants it. There’s no other choice,” he said.

“We’ve been facing a number of new charges. Not long ago, the police asked us to install personal ID scanners for 3,800 yuan (U.S. $550). Now we’re charged for this new software. We don’t know what we will be charged for next. So I wouldn’t pay, and I’m closing my business.”

Cafe owners complained online this week about paying licensing fees for an operating system that can be downloaded free for personal use.

“How much of the charge goes to the Red Flag Linux Co. and how much to the cultural management authorities in Nanchang?” one post read.

An employee at Red Flag Linux’s developer, Beijing Zhongke Red Flag Software Co., confirmed that the system is free for personal use but couldn’t comment on whether businesses are ever required to buy licenses.

Suspected censorship

Xiao Qiang, director of the China Internet Project at the University of California-Berkeley, said he sees the move to Linux as an effort to tighten censorship and step up surveillance online.

“It mainly means [a] less secure and private communication environment for netizens in those Internet cafes,” Xiao said. “The authorities are gaining more control.”

“China has a vast number of small Internet cafes, and a huge proportion of them are in a quasi-legal area. By forcing all Internet cafes to change operating systems, the authorities are making them register…and therefore all kinds of policing and surveillance software will be installed at all these large and small Internet cafes as well.”

Bill Xia, president of Dynamic Internet Technology, said he doubted Red Flag would provide a significant advantage in censorship and surveillance—though it requires an additional step for users to install Freegate, a popular anti-censorship utility that Xia’s firm developed.

“You would have pretty much the same censoring power for either Windows or Linux,” Xia said. “It seems like a disadvantage for Internet cafes because Linux tends to have more limited support for different software.”

“Maybe the local Public Security office can make some new money from the Internet cafe owners because they will have to buy it, but the owners will likely reinstall Windows to make their customers happy,” Xia said, calling the 5,000-yuan licensing fee “crazy.”

Chinese who access the Web at Internet cafes are already required to register with their identification cards. Online monitors patrol the Web inside China for content deemed politically subversive or related to gambling, pornography, or illegal business dealings.

Large numbers of Web sites are blocked and dozens of Chinese citizens have been arrested for accessing or sending politically sensitive information over the Web.

Home-grown system

Red Flag Linux was created by the Software Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1999. Financial backing came from a government-owned firm, ShangHai NewMargin Venture Capital.

An employee at Beijing Red Flag Software Co. Ltd who asked not to be named said most users of the operating system were government offices and businesses, which must pay licensing fees to use Windows.

“We custom designed the software according to most Chinese users’ habits by eliminating the English language,” the employee said.

The panel recommended that vaccines to be used in the 2008-2009 influenza season in the U.S. contain the following:

  • an A/Brisbane/59/2007 (H1N1)-like virus;
  • an A/Brisbane/10/2007 (H3N2)-like virus; *
  • a B/Florida/4/2006-like virus. #

    * A/Brisbane/10/2007 is a current southern hemisphere vaccine virus.
#B/Florida/4/2006 and B/Brisbane/3/2007 (a B/Florida/4/2006-like virus) are current southern hemisphere vaccine viruses.

The influenza vaccine composition to be used in the 2008-2009 influenza season in the U.S. is identical to that recommended by the World Health Organization on February 14, 2008, for the Northern Hemisphere's 2008-2009 influenza season.

They told us that the not so effective flu vaccine last year....still contained thimerosal.

(the only Fluzone vaccine product containing thimerosal is the multi-dose vial)

And did they not tell us to have our doctors use single dose vials only as a safety percaution?

Check each Manuf. Name Brand ...and ask your Doctor/Nurse to use single dose vials.

Wikipedia pulls in flood of cash from users

...........................................................................................................

MATT HARTLEY

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

December 30, 2008 at 11:27 PM EST

Someone forgot to tell Wikipedia there's an economic crisis afoot.

Conventional thinking says that in times of economic turmoil, consumers sit on their wallets and spend cash only on essentials.

Free online encyclopedias don't generally enter the conversation.

This year, the Wikimedia Foundation – a non-profit organization that operates the Wikipedia family of websites – set a goal of $6-million in donations, enough to cover its 2009 expenses, while hoping to buck the global financial slowdown.

At first, it appeared the fundraising drive that began on Nov. 3 would fall short of its goal, even though the group was running banner ads soliciting donations at the top of each of Wikipedia's 11 million pages.

Then, on Dec. 23, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales wrote an impassioned plea to the site's users, imploring them to put their faith in the foundation and to “imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge.”

In the next 24 hours, the number of donations rose 892 per cent, from about 800 the day before Mr. Wales's letter went public to 8,186 the day it began appearing on Wikipedia pages.

Before his appeal to users, the foundation was receiving about $30,000 (U.S.) a day in donations. Now the foundation is averaging more than $215,000 in donations every day.

The explosion of support is further proof of how important Wikipedia has become to the 275 million people who visit it every month, and it underscores the power of the Internet to quickly raise money through small increments and grassroots initiatives.

“We're really thrilled that people have come out in force and made a clear statement that they care about this cause and they care about Wikipedia, even though we were kind of nervous after the economic news became really clear,” said Jay Walsh, a spokesman for the Wikimedia Foundation.

Last year the site brought in just over $1.5-million in its yearend fundraising drive. As of Tuesday, Wikimedia had already collected more than $5.5-million, placing it on track to reach its goal two weeks before the end of the campaign, Jan. 15, the site's eighth birthday.

The foundation – which has only 23 paid staff members – relies on an army of 150,000 volunteers to keep the site running and as accurate as possible.

Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia that can be edited and updated by anyone, is the eighth most popular website in the world and is also the most visited non-profit site on the Web.

Unlike other high-flying Web 2.0 success stories such as Facebook and MySpace, Wikipedia has eschewed the millions of dollars in advertising revenue pouring onto the Internet, instead relying on the financial support of its ever-expanding user base.

Although the foundation has received a handful of “major gifts” of between $5,000 and $10,000, most of the donations coming in are from individuals pledging an average of just $30.

“You multiply that effect thousands of times you see the pattern that emerges. It's really fitting because it echoes the framework of Wikipedia; lots of people all over the world making small contributions, which is what created Wikipedia.”

The result is remarkably similar to the online fundraising efforts of U.S. president-elect Barack Obama, who raised an unprecedented campaign war chest by collecting thousands of small contributions from supporters over the Internet.

Finger length may predict financial success

AP Science Writer Randolph E. Schmid, Ap Science Writer – 1 hr 32 mins ago

WASHINGTON – The length of a man's ring finger may predict his success as a financial trader. Researchers at the University of Cambridge in England report that men with longer ring fingers, compared to their index fingers, tended to be more successful in the frantic high-frequency trading in the London financial district.

Indeed, the impact of biology on success was about equal to years of experience at the job, the team led by physiologist John M. Coates reports in Monday's edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The same ring-to-index finger ratio has previously been associated with success in competitive sports such as soccer and basketball, the researchers noted.
The length ratio between those two fingers is determined during the development of the fetus and the relatively longer ring finger indicates greater exposure to the male hormone androgen, the researchers noted.

Previous studies have found that such exposure can lead to increased confidence, risk preferences, search persistence, heightened vigilance and quickened reaction times.
In a separate study last year, Coates and colleagues reported that the hormone that drives male aggression and sexual interest also seemed able to boost short term success at finance.

They studied male financial traders in London, taking saliva samples in the morning and evening. They found that those with higher levels of testosterone in the morning were more likely to make an unusually big profit that day. Testosterone, best known as the male sex hormone, affects aggression, confidence and risk-taking.

In the new study, the researchers measured the right hands of 44 male stock traders who were engaged in a type of trade that involved rapid decision-making and quick physical reactions.

Over 20 months those with longer ring fingers compared to their index fingers made 11 times more money than those with the shortest ring fingers. Over the same time the most experienced traders made about 9 times more than the least experienced ones.
Looking only at experienced traders, the long-ring-finger folks earned 5 times more than those with short ring fingers.

While the finger ratio, showing fetal exposure to male hormones, appears to signal likely success in high-actively trading that calls for risk-taking and quick reactions, it may not indicate people who would do well at other sorts of financial activities, the researchers said.

Some traders require additional skills on dealing with clients and sales workers.
And the advantage may even reverse for some, Coates team said, such as traders taking a more analytical and long-term approach to the markets.

One study, which looked at average finger ratios in university departments found that faculty from math, science and engineering exhibited longer index finger ratio, rather than ring finger, they noted.

'Qigong' masters to pay maiden visit to US
    ........................................................................

A group of "Qigong" masters will pay a 14-day visit to the United States from January 30, the first time the ancient Chinese healing practice has been introduced to Americans by a "Qigong" delegation.

The six-member delegation will visit New York, Boston, and Washington D.C. to perform "Qigong" and promote Chinese culture, said an official with the Chinese Health Qigong Association (CHQA),the organizer of the visit.

"Qigong" is used as part of traditional Chinese healthcare for preventive and therapeutic treatments. "Qi", frequently translated as "energy flow," is believed to be part of every living thing that exists, as a kind of "life force" or "spiritual energy".

A member asked about house fires, (fire safety) there is a lot out there on it.

This looks like a good site ...

You may want to print off info and share it with others?

    ...................................................................................................................

on 4/28/2008 I'm a retired battalion chief who served 25+ years with a county Fire and EMS department in the southeast.

NEVER go into a burning building unless you are a properly equipped and trained firefighter.

The world inside a burning building is completely unknown and dangerous to anyone who has not trained to become a firefighter. The environment is so dangerous that fire departments in the USA must adhere to a "2-in, 2-out" mandate from OSHA: before a team of two firefighters can enter a building to search for a possible victim, there must be a two-person crew outside standing by to rescue the entry team if they get into trouble. The only exception is an imminent life rescue situation, i.e., you see someone in the building

Under no circumstances should anyone re-enter a burning building.

Plans for Children, the Elderly or Others Who May Need Assistance
Special provisions may be required for infants, young children, disabled or the elderly who may need additional help when escaping. These provisions should be included in the home fire escape plan and discussed with all family members. Special Provisions for

Children: When they're afraid, children will commonly seek sheltered places such as a closet or under the bed. Encourage them to follow the family's EDITH plan and meet at the designated location. Remind them to NEVER hide during a fire - they should always go outside, if possible. Make sure children can operate the windows, descend a ladder, or lower themselves to the ground through a window. (Slide out on the stomach, feet first.

Hang on with both hands, and bend the knees when landing.) Lower children to the ground before you exit from the window; they may panic and not follow if an adult goes first. Have children learn how to dial 9-1-1 and practice saying the family name and your home's street address into the phone.Practice Your Fire Escape Plan

Most importantly, practice your home fire escape plan before an incident occurs.A good way to practice the effectiveness of a home fire escape plan is to position each family member in his or her bed, turn off all the lights, and activate the smoke detector by depressing the test switch. Each family member should help "awaken" the others by yelling the alert.

Family members should exit their rooms according to the escape plan, crawl low under smoke, practice feeling doors for heat, and meet in the designated safe spot outside the home. Practice drills at different times and under different situations, i.e., at night, in the winter, or when a friend is staying over.

(This might encourage the friend to have his/her family create a plan for their home.)Not all "homes" are single residential structures; some include apartments and other types of buildings. Some additional discussion may be helpful when planning methods of escape for these types of structures.

Escape from Other Types of Structures

High-Rise Apartment Complexes:  Most high-rise or multi-story apartment complexes post fire escape plans for all residents to see and follow. However, these plans seldom include escape routes for each apartment. Family members must develop and practice an evacuation plan for their individual apartment.
