John, I think the actual Onion article was titled "Is the Government Spying on Paranoid Schizophrenics Enough?" Regardless, it is amusing to see that the government is so worried about "fringe" groups enough to infiltrate and manipulate them. In fact, doesn't this make the government one of those conspiracy types themselves?

Bye, bye John, it's been nice knowing you. If Cass Sunstein gets his way, I suspect this column along with many others will be infiltrated or censored for the good of us all. I wonder when the "Cass Sunstein Re-Education Camps" start opening. Until people start thinking "correctly", many of his ideas won't get very far. What is truly frightening is that this guy could very well be in line for a position on the Supreme Court. Be very very afraid.

The article was written by the head of Obama's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, Harvard Law Professor Cass Sunstein.  He’s a good friend of the president and the promoter the contradictory idea: "libertarian paternalism". In the article, he muses about what government can do to http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1084585 - combat "conspiracy" theories :

    ...we suggest a distinctive tactic for breaking up the hard core of extremists who supply conspiracy theories: cognitive infiltration of extremist groups, whereby government agents or their allies ... will undermine the crippled epistemology of those who subscribe to such theories. They do so by planting doubts about the theories and stylized facts that circulate within such groups, thereby introducing beneficial cognitive diversity.

    That's right. Obama's Regulation Czar is so concerned about citizens thinking the wrong way that he proposed sending government agents to "infiltrate" these groups and manipulate them. This reads like an Onion article: Powerful government official proposes to combat paranoid conspiracy groups that believe the government is out to get them...by proving that they really are out to get them. Did nothing of what Sunstein was writing strike him as...I don't know...crazy? "Cognitive infiltration" of extremist groups by government agents? "Stylized facts"? Was "truthiness"  too pedantic?

    This was written 18 months ago, at a time when the ascendancy of Sunstein's close friend to the Presidency looked likely, in exactly the area he now oversees. Additionally, the government-controlled messaging that Sunstein desires has been a prominent feature of U.S. Government actions over the last decade, including in some recently revealed practices of the current administration, and the mindset in which it is grounded explains a great deal about our political class.

    ... What is most odious and revealing about Sunstein's worldview is his condescending, self-loving belief that "false conspiracy theories" are largely the province of fringe, ignorant Internet masses and the Muslim world.

    It's certainly true that one can easily find irrational conspiracy theories in those venues, but some of the most destructive "false conspiracy theories" have emanated from the very entity Sunstein wants to endow with covert propaganda power:  namely, the U.S. Government itself, along with its elite media defenders. Moreover, "crazy conspiracy theorist" has long been the favorite epithet of those same parties to discredit people trying to expose elite wrongdoing and corruption.

    It is this history of government deceit and wrongdoing that renders Sunstein's desire to use covert propaganda to "undermine" anti-government speech so repugnant.  The reason conspiracy theories resonate so much is precisely that people have learned -- rationally -- to distrust government actions and statements. Sunstein's proposed covert propaganda scheme is a perfect illustration of why that is.  In other words, people don't trust the Government and "conspiracy theories" are so pervasive precisely because government is typically filled with people like Cass Sunstein, who think that systematic deceit and government-sponsored manipulation are justified by their own Goodness and Superior Wisdom.

That thought alone is going to freak out other members here when they read it. My commenting on that comment is going to make things even worse. If I deny this is true it might trigger more paranoia. If I agree with it I'll only add to those thoughts. Maybe I shouldn't have commented on it at all? No that would raise suspicion. Have you ever tried to reason with someone that's paranoid? Now I'm stuck in a conundrum!

"Yes Men"  arguing with him a little and then coming right around to his
 
way of thinking for that A Grade.  Not exactly the real world.
 
Does this fellow think, all the world's a classroom?

Incrementally, it seems they want to take away the freedom of speech.  Maybe they...Progressives as they call themselves now,  feel if it is done gradually, inch by inch , the people will be too stupid to notice. All for our own good of course.
 
First Amendment anyone?  Where is the ACLU, where are the Democrats/Republicans of old that would be up in arms if either party even hinted of this. 
 
The Media, MSM, Google and Wikipedia have all definitely been tainted over the years with a definite slant to the left. Wikipedia is subject to revisionist history depending on who is doing the editing that day.
 
Let's see....what to think? what to feel? what to eat and drink?  free speech?

"It appears that Sunstein and Lloyd are two peas in a pod.  Both of these men believe that commercial broadcasting companies should fund strictly public broadcasting.  He also proposes more “democratic” means of control like “compulsory public-affairs programming, right of reply, content review by nonpartisan experts or guidelines to encourage attention to public issues and diversity of view.”

Believe it or not, that’s not the worst to come out of Sunstein’s mouth or from his pen lately.  Sunstein actually believes that Obama and those working as part of his administration http://www.wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=110103 - should interpret federal laws, not the federal courts .

“There is no reason to believe that in the face of statutory ambiguity, the meaning of federal law should be settled by the inclinations and predispositions of federal judges. This statement was the central thesis of Sunstein’s 2006 Yale Law School paper, “Beyond Marbury: The Executive’s Power to Say What the Law Is.” The paper, in which he argues the president and his advisers should be the ones to interpret federal laws.

A BILL

To amend title 18, United States Code, with respect to cyberbullying.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

    This Act may be cited as the `Megan Meier Cyberbullying Prevention Act'.

SEC. 2. FINDINGS.

    Congress finds the following:

      (1) Four out of five of United States children aged 2 to 17 live in a home where either they or their parents access the Internet.

      (2) Youth who create Internet content and use social networking sites are more likely to be targets of cyberbullying.

      (3) Electronic communications provide anonymity to the perpetrator and the potential for widespread public distribution, potentially making them severely dangerous and cruel to youth.

      (4) Online victimizations are associated with emotional distress and other psychological problems, including depression.

      (5) Cyberbullying can cause psychological harm, including depression; negatively impact academic performance, safety, and the well-being of children in school; force children to change schools; and in some cases lead to extreme violent behavior, including murder and suicide.

      (6) Sixty percent of mental health professionals who responded to the Survey of Internet Mental Health Issues report having treated at least one patient with a problematic Internet experience in the previous five years; 54 percent of these clients were 18 years of age or younger.

SEC. 3. CYBERBULLYING.

    (a) In General- Chapter 41 of title 18, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following:

`Sec. 881. Cyberbullying

    `(a) Whoever transmits in interstate or foreign commerce any communication, with the intent to coerce, intimidate, harass, or cause substantial emotional distress to a person, using electronic means to support severe, repeated, and hostile behavior, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

    `(b) As used in this section--

      `(1) the term `communication' means the electronic transmission, between or among points specified by the user, of information of the user's choosing, without change in the form or content of the information as sent and received; and

      `(2) the term `electronic means' means any equipment dependent on electrical power to access an information service, including email, instant messaging, blogs, websites, telephones, and text messages.'.

    (b) Clerical Amendment- The table of sections at the beginning of chapter 41 of title 18, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the following new item:

      `881. Cyberbullying.'.
