(WebMD)  Women with higher blood levels of flame retardants found in

some household objects, known as PBDEs, took about twice as long to

become pregnant as women with lower blood levels, according to a new

Attack of the Killer Mattresses - Coming to TV News Near You!

Trevor Butterworth, November 6, 2007

...But there’s a problem, according to a September 25 CBS 2 Chicago, and an increasing number of local news stations across America - the new safety standard has been achieved by using chemicals that could make you sick.

Despite the CPSC addressing this concern with extensive migration/exposure assessment studies that looked at the potential for dermal absorption, inhalation and ingestion of these chemicals in adults and children (including cases of bed-wetting) and finding no evidence of appreciable risk,

news organizations found a klaxon to power their stories in the form of a pressure group "People for Clean Beds," who are "fighting" to keep "mattresses and bedding clean from toxic flame retardant chemicals."

Many Doctors Oppose this regulation.

As of July 1 2007 all mattresses nationwide, including crib, must

be flameproof and contain toxic chemicals. Please help get the

word out.

...Beware of Organic or other mattresses that claim they use no

chemicals. There are no

labeling requirements. There are no chemical free systems that

will pass the severe open

flame test, not even wool, they are all toxic. Your only safe choice

is a bare waterbed or a

prescription mattress.

Safer Ventilator Prevents Contamination From Water Condensation

Thinking way down the road to Our Good Health....  and Sanity     : )

Seniors Stuck At Home Day After Day.
.................................................................
.........................................................................

This article below is from 2005.... and where are we 5 years later?

The lack of specialized transportation for our Seniors is Shameful.

Seniors in rural areas are practically prisoners in their own homes.

Cut off from what the rest of us take for granted every single day.

Is this what you want for your own parents? yourself?

What type of transportation do you want available for yourself when you

stop driving?   If you don't drive after your early 80's... and you want to

live in your own home,

who will drive you?

Keeping Our Eyes on the Road:
How an Aging Population Will Get from Here to There
...........................................................................................

Byron Thames

excerpt-

...Along with our causes for concern about the gradual changes in elderly drivers, we also need to pay attention to the gradual changes in those people over 65, 75, and 85 who have given up driving. Because driving cessation may result in losing community mobility.

As a family doctor, I can tell you first hand what happens when seniors lose their independence and are stranded without adequate transportation options. It's not just a matter of a little inconvenience. They become sedentary and isolated, and it sucks the life right out of them - literally and figuratively.

It cuts them off from family, social opportunities and civic activities. It makes it harder to go to the doctor or the pharmacy. It too often leads to depression, obesity, even alcoholism, and declining health in general.

I've seen it in my practice, but I'm sure many of you in this room also know a relative, friend or neighbor who's gone from vibrant and vigorous to sad and lethargic, simply because they have no easy way to get around.

One of AARP's most recent studies found that non-drivers over the age of 75 say they face severe restrictions on their daily activities. In fact, they were six times as likely as drivers to miss doing something they would have liked to do because they did not have the transportation.

There is a non profit organization that shows people how to start a Senior Transpot

Service... where the Senior donates his/her car to the organization and drivers volunteer

or are paid to drive Seniors to appts, shopping, movies etc.  The value of the car is used to

offset the fees incurred to transport them, when the value of the car is used the fees are

paid out of pocket by seniors.   This works well in rural areas where people wish to live in

their own homes but do not drive.    Imagine... you give up driving at age 82-83 or so and

live to be 99 ....  16 years is a long time to sit at home with no car!

Let's do it for our parents.... and for ourselves.

Please talk about it at work... at church, with friends and write to Congress.

Trees of Life

The semi-essential arginine, proline and all the essential amino acids, would have provided additional nutritional benefits for the rapid recovery from scurvy by
vitamin C when food supply was limited. The value of arginine, especially in the recovery of the critically ill sailors, is postulated as a source of nitric oxide, and the arginine-derived guanidino compounds as controlling factors for the activities of different nitric oxide synthases.

This review provides further insights into the use of the candidate "trees of life" by indigenous peoples in eastern Canada. It raises hypotheses on the nutritional and synergistic roles of arginine, its metabolites, and other biofactors complementing the role
of vitamin C especially in treating Cartier's critically ill sailors.

Key Words: VEGF • receptors • NO • chimeric • angiogenesis

There is substantial evidence supporting the idea that the process of angiogenesis requires the synthesis of endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO).

NO, characterized as a major endothelial-derived relaxing factor, exerts paracrine and autocrine roles in maintaining cardiovascular homeostasis, vascular tone, and microvascular permeability.

During the early steps of angiogenesis in which new blood vessels sprout from existing vascular beds, there is a persistence of vasodilation and increase in vascular permeability, suggesting that these hemodynamic changes in the existing vasculature are indispensable during an angiogenic process.

A number of angiogenic factors can triggers the release of NO, synthesized by the endothelial

isoform of NO synthase (eNOS). One such factor is the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),

which as its name implies, is a critical mitogenic, chemoattractant, and survival factor for

endothelial cells http://www.avianflutalk.com/RTE_textarea.asp?mode=reply&ID=1291#R1-M990703 - 1  in addition to being characterized as a potent vascular permeability factor. http://www.avianflutalk.com/RTE_textarea.asp?mode=reply&ID=1291#R2-M990703 - 2

Early studies have demonstrated that VEGF can readily stimulate NO production in cultured cells

and isolated blood vessels and that NO is essential in mediating the VEGF-induced endothelial

cell proliferation and organization into tubes in 3D cultures. http://www.avianflutalk.com/RTE_textarea.asp?mode=reply&ID=1291#R3-M990703 - 3,4 http://www.avianflutalk.com/RTE_textarea.asp?mode=reply&ID=1291#R4-M990703 -  Subsequent in vivo studies have

also demonstrated that eNOS knockout mice had significantly attenuated VEGF and

ischemia induced angiogenesis and vascular permeability. http://www.avianflutalk.com/RTE_textarea.asp?mode=reply&ID=1291#R5-M990703 - 5,6 http://www.avianflutalk.com/RTE_textarea.asp?mode=reply&ID=1291#R6-M990703 -

These studies place eNOS derived NO as a key mediator of VEGF induced angiogenesis in postnatal mice.

Next time you happen by an Asian Market... you may want to ask if they sell, Patra.

I have only bought Patra made by DEEP.

they come frozen.. the size of a small cookie... we wrap them in a paper towel and put

them (4) in the microwave for 1 min.

You can put 4-5 of them in the waver and with a glass of juice, it makes a nice snack.

They are spicy...

If you want to know more about them..

Making them would be quite an undertaking... frozen is fine...

Executive Summary
..................................

The APD's are now following up with more than 20% of the JRI's

which could be summed up in a brief statement on the BSO factors given

earlier in the report.   By the time the used equipment is delivered to the

new HLD facility our old KLR's will no longer be adaquate to service

the VSL's installed last year.   The total cost analysis will be available

as soon as the UI is calculated by the CIW Team.

allows the taste of salt without the adverse health risks of sodium. Plus, it has the added dietary benefits of two nutrients, potassium and lysine, which are essential to good health. Food scientists have searched for years for an alternative to salt. Potassium chloride has been the only known alternative, but it has an undesirable metallic taste. Our patented process combines L-lysine, which has its own salty flavor, with potassium chloride. Our patented process masks the bitterness. There are 356 mg of potassium chloride in a 1/4 teaspoon of AlsoSalt.

Stroke Study Boosts Non-Invasive Procedure
............................................................................

Less Invasive Stenting Procedure
Shown to Effectively Help Open Blocked Arteries in the Neck

Some people go in to the Doctor...

because the family has noticed personality changes...

small problems become gigantic to them/ grouchy

or the reverse

person seems too quiet and withdrawn/ slugish

If your carotid arteries are narrowed by more than 50% and you have been experiencing stroke symptoms- or if your arteries are at least 70% blocked but you do not have symptom-

your doctor may recommend that you undergo endarterectomy to reduce your risk of stroke.

In this operation, a surgeon cuts into the carotid artery to remove fatty plaque and small clots that are clogging the vessel.

The procedure has been shown to be highly effective.

In people with severe carotid artery stenosis who have stroke symptoms or have already had a stroke, endarterectomy can cut the estimated two-year stroke risk by more than 80%. Like all surgeries, however, endarterectomy carries serious risks, and not everyone is a good candidate for this operation.

The recent approval of a carotid stent by the FDA

now provides such patients with a less invasive alternative.

In carotid stenting, a doctor inserts the stent, which is a slender metal mesh tube, into the carotid artery to increase blood flow in areas narrowed by plaque. Recent trials have produced some encouraging news about the efficacy of stenting,

but the procedure is not risk free and it is not an option for everyone.

In addition, because the recent trials involved relatively small numbers of patients,

many experts are awaiting the results of a major study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, called the Carotid Revascularization Endarterectomy vs. Stenting Trial (CREST), before recommending more widespread use of carotid stents.

More Thoughts On the Health Care Bill-

"Let's focus on the substance [of the bill]. If you think it will be better for the American

people, vote for it. If you think it will be harmful, don't vote for it. For me it was a close call

in my mind. This is not the way I would have written it. For me it came down to, we need

to try something. It may not be perfect. If it doesn't work exactly the way we hope let's

correct it. To just sit here year after year letting things fester, that's not the right way to

go."

"My Fellow Americans": The Speech Obama Should Give to Congress
by Dave Lindorff

As imagined by Dave Lindorff

My Fellow Americans.

I stand before you a chastened president. I made a mistake. Two mistakes really. (Wild applause from Republican side.)

I thought that Congress could do its job and through the deliberative process, produce a health care reform plan that would win broad support across the aisle and among all of you. But I'm afraid that I was wrong. Health care is an enormous industry--maybe the biggest and most powerful industry in the country--and it has far too much power in Congress. Literally thousands of lobbyists, carrying tens of billions of dollars in campaign contributions--have invaded these halls (and my house too, by the way) (relieved laughter) and distorted the process, and in the end have stymied reform. (Expect some hissing.)

Meanwhile, I have realized that the answer has been staring us in the face all along.

Heart Roundup: Device-Maker Probes, Too Many Angiograms

  •

    excerpt-

...The Justice Department is investigating and has won settlements with two lesser-known device makers. A former device saleswoman who brought those two cases has also sued Boston Scientific, Medtronic and St. Jude Medical. The DOJ hasn't joined in those cases and the companies say none of their top execs were involved in any illegal marketing of the devices. More on the situation is http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122645554305019705-search.html?KEYWORDS=atricure&COLLECTION=wsjie/6month - here .

Coronary angiograms, widely used tests to detect artery blockages in the heart, often turn up little or no evidence of disease, a study in the http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/short/362/10/886 - New England Journal of Medicine found. That suggests that the more than a million U.S. patients who undergo the diagnostic test each year at a cost of about $10,000 each, are frequently exposed to unneeded risks of a costly procedure, the WSJ says in http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704655004575114071378301774.html - another article .

The study of nearly 400,000 angiograms performed between 2004 and 2008 in the U.S. found that 62% of the patients didn't have evidence of significant obstructions, while 38% had important blockages. Of course, a clean angiogram can still provide useful informaton and the findings don't apply in cases when there is established heart disease or the threat of an imminent heart attack. Patients included in the study weren't previously diagnosed with heart disease and represent about 20% of those who get angoigrams.

Still, the data indicate overuse of angiograms. "We've got to get much smarter about how we're ordering and interpreting these tests," a Mayo Clinic cardiologist told the WSJ.

Health Care 101: A consumer primer on Obama's bill

WASHINGTON - It took lawmakers a year to shape President Barack Obama's health care

    Abstract

Neurosonography is used as a primary imaging modality worldwide

for visualization of the developing brain and spinal cord in fetuses, infants

and children. During the entire process of brain development,

there is rapid cell turnover, a condition that is favorable for

genetic mutations once external stimuli are applied.

No clinical studies in humans have been performed

specifically to discuss the long-term impact of

postnatal ultrasound exposure of the central nervous system.

    Currently published studies concerning the

prenatal and postnatal use of Doppler or of ultrasound contrast agent use

and the developing central nervous system are insufficient to draw

    meaningful conclusions regarding safety.

By instituting a standardized examination and following appropriate patient handling

guidelines, the risk of an adverse outcome associated with neurosonography is minimized.

This paper recommends adoption of the ALARA principle and offers suggestions as to how

to minimize the risk of adverse effects in neurosonography (E-mail: mailto:barrlmd@ausrad.com - barrlmd@ausrad.com ).

Very Good Info On the Bill Here-
    ...........................................................

  • Big win for the AMA at the expense of States:  In the late 90's the feds gave up authority to determine Medicaid payments to providers, leaving all that authority in the hands of States.  States liked this because they could squeeze providers to save money.  Providers wanted federal "protection" from cost-conscious Governors.
  • This bill prohibits States from paying primary care doctors less through Medicaid than they receive in Medicare (for two years).  This is the camel's nose under the tent to a long-term increase in Medicaid payments to providers.  This means a loss of expenditure control for Governors, higher Medicaid costs for States and the federal government, and higher incomes for doctors.  This is also the beginning of the reversal of a strong bipartisan mid-90's policy consensus.  This is terrible policy.
  • Net effect of Bill #2 on taxes:  +$156 B higher taxes.  While that's the effect over a decade, the bulk of the tax increases occur in a six-year period beginning in 2014.
  • Adopts a version of the President's proposal for feds to regulate health insurance premiums in addition to States.  Secretary of HHS could "review potentially unreasonable premiums and may take corrective actions, such as requiring the insurer to pay a penalty, denying or modifying the premium or ordering the plan to pay rebates to consumers."  What is a potentially unreasonable premium??  Congratulations, AHIP.
  •  You have made your industry a federally regulated utility.  Have fun with that.
  •

Health Care Gains Start Soon - Bigger Ones Later

    by The Associated Press

     excerpt-

The real transformation of America's health insurance system won't take place until 2014.

Four breathtaking changes will happen simultaneously:

    * Insurers will be required to take all applicants. They won't be able to turn down people in poor health, or charge them more.

    * States will set up new insurance supermarkets for small businesses and people buying their own coverage, pooling together to get the kind of purchasing clout government workers have now.

*Most Americans will be required to carry health insurance, either through an employer, a government program or by buying their own. Those who refuse will face fines from the IRS.

    * Tax credits to help pay for premiums will start flowing to middle-class working families, and Medicaid will be expanded to cover more low income people. Households making up to four times the poverty level - about $88,000 for a family of four- will be eligible for assistance. But the most generous aid - including help with copayments and deductibles * will be for those on the lower-to-middle rungs of the income scale.

( and the income levels are???? )

When all is said and done, the majority of working-age Americans and their families will still have employer-sponsored coverage, as they do now. But the number of uninsured will drop by more than half. Illegal immigrants would account for more than one-third of the remaining 23 million people without coverage.

Cost could be the Achilles' heel of the whole effort.

"I hope it is not repealed, because we do need to extend coverage to most of our population," said Gail Wilensky, who ran Medicare for President George H.W. Bush and remains a leading health care adviser to Republicans. "But it could well be substantially modified. It expands coverage, but it does very little to take on two other major issues: improving quality and leveling the rate of growth in spending."

Rotarix rotavirus vaccine contaminated, officials say
    ................................................................................

    By Tom Watkins, CNN

    March 22, 2010 4:22 p.m. EDT

Rotarix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, was approved by the FDA in 2008. The contaminant

material is DNA from porcine circovirus 1, a virus from pigs that is not known to cause

disease in humans or animals, Hamburg said.

About 1 million children in the United States and

about 30 million worldwide have gotten Rotarix vaccine, she said.

    ................

Si why are we selling rotavirus vaccine to

About 1 million children in the United States ??

On June 5, 2009, the World Health Organization

(WHO) recommended that rotavirus vaccine be included in all

    national immunization programs

Each year more than 500,000 children die from diarrhoeal disease caused by rotavirus,[2]

rotavirus infections were estimated to cause
    approximately 527,000  (475 000–580 000)
    deaths, predominantly in developing countries.

    excerpt-

With "Let's Move," we're issuing a call to action.  We are telling everyone let's move to give

parents the information they need to make better decisions for their kids.  Let's move to

get healthier food into our schools.  Let's move to get more supermarkets into

underserved areas so that all Americans have access to fresh, nutritious foods.  And

probably most importantly, let's move to help our kids be more physically active -- both in

    and out of school.

I understand they have to reform the reform...     I just hope it's middle class friendly.

Relative to the Senate bill, health reform lowers premiums for families with income below $44,000 and above $66,000.

???  what about this income range?     45,000 to 66,000   out in the cold?

( perhaps this is the major fatted calf income range?   :)

Relative to the House bill, reform makes premiums less expensive for families with income

    between roughly $55,000 and $88,000.

The question is What got passed?  ... as I see it, they voted on the Senate version?

Senate version looks odd in comparison.

    could it be any smaller?

shows up better here than the White House site.

Tax Credit For Health Ins. Premiums...

so if you are single and your premiums cost  11,000  what is the credit?

What is the Injcome level / Credit for a family of 2?

Why so little info from over 2,500 pages?

Obama's New Health Insurance Rule - A GOP Idea
    ..............................................................................................

    Associated Press Writer
Updated: 7:21 am PDT March 27,2010

    excerpt-

...More than a dozen GOP attorneys general are determined to challenge the requirement

    in federal court as unconstitutional.

Starting in 2014, the new law will require nearly all Americans to have health insurance

through an employer, a government program or by buying it directly. That year, new

insurance markets will open for business, health plans will be required to accept all

applicants and tax credits will start flowing to millions of people, helping them pay the

    premiums.

Those who continue to go without coverage will have to pay a penalty to the IRS, except in

cases of financial hardship. Fines vary by income and family size. For example, a single

person making $45,000 would pay an extra $1,125 in taxes when the penalty is fully

    phased in, in 2016.

    whichever is higher,

United States: Health Care Law Alert -

March 2010 - Health Care Reform: Provider Alert
    ...................................................................................

    excerpt-

Hospitals, physicians and related health care providers have just 20 months to react to changes in the way Medicare, and perhaps the private sector, will begin to pay for services under the comprehensive health care reform legislation signed into law yesterday by President Obama.

...the new law is loaded with provisions that will place many health care providers under further pressure and scrutiny. Among them are new limitations on physician-owned hospitals, new Stark self-referral requirements for referrals for imaging services; a requirement for formal compliance programs; and expanded resources for fraud and abuse enforcement.

Although portions of the law are subject to court challenge, those provisions affecting providers likely will not be included in those challenges. Most involve changes to the Medicare program that are likely to influence the private sector to act in a similar manner.

Can denture cream cause neurological disorders?

    http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Can+denture+cream+cause+neurological+disorders%3F-a0195323166 - http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Can+denture+cream+cause+neurological+disorders%3F-a0195323166

For Elders or Family or Friends
    .......................................................   ALERT !

Fairfax, VA: Before the medical journal Neurology printed a study alerting consumers to

the high levels of zinc found in denture adhesives, there was not a lot of information

available about the potential for denture cream zinc poisoning.

Dr. Sharon P. Nations of the Department of Neurology, University of Texas Southwestern

Medical Center, worked with a team of researchers to identify four patients with various

neurological abnormalities. The common denominator was that all four patients wore

dentures and used excessive amounts of denture adhesive.

Zinc concentrations ranging from about 17,000 to 34,000 µg/g were identified in Fixodent

and Poli-Grip denture creams. When the four patients stopped using denture cream, three

experienced a drop in serum zinc levels and two reported mild neurologic improvement due

to copper supplementation. No alternative source of excess zinc ingestion or explanation

    for hypocupremia was identified.

The study concluded that denture cream contains zinc and that chronic excessive use may

result in hypocupremia and serious neurologic disease.

When ABC's "Good Morning America" caught wind of the study this past spring, zinc

poisoning and its link to denture cream adhesives suddenly went mainstream.

"Good Morning America" revealed that 34 million Americans wear dentures, a third of

whom use denture adhesive cream. To most, denture cream is not unlike other hygienic

products like toothpaste or shampoo, which require no warnings against excessive use. As

    a result,

most people are unaware of the health risks associated with denture creams.

What do you mean   Medicare doesn't pay for it ?

Nothing shocked me more in the early days of caring for my elderly mother than the

discovery that Medicare, the U.S.'s universal health coverage for those ages 65 and older,

does not pay for so many of the things the frail elderly require.

    Phthalates
Phthalates are a group of chemicals used in a wide variety of products, from toys to carpeting and medical tubing. In nail polishes, they are used primarily at concentrations of less than 10% as plasticizers, to reduce cracking by making them less brittle. Dibutylphthalate (DBP) is used most commonly in nail polishes, but dimethylphthalate (DMP) and diethylphthalate (DEP) are used occassionally. For information on health questions related to phthalates in cosmetics, please see http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/ProductandIngredientSafety/SelectedCosmeticIngredients/ucm128250.htm - Phthalates and Cosmetic Products 7.

    Excerpts-
    ..................

    GET the Lead OUT !
    ....................................

EPA believes that diesel exhaust is among the substances that may pose the greatest risks. Average lifetime cancer risk from exposure to diesel exhaust alone may exceed 1 in 100,000 and could be as high as 1 in 1,000.156 Inhalation of particulate matter from diesel exhaust is classified by EPA as a likely human carcinogen,156 and by IARC as a probable human carcinogen for lung cancer.157 Diesel exhaust particles usually consist of an elemental carbon core surrounded by organic matter and other substances, including sulfuric acid, that adhere to it once airborne and are small enough to be inhaled into the alveolar regions of the lung.77

In 2009, EPA recommended that owners of buildings, including schools, constructed or renovated between 1950 and 1978, test masonry and window caulking for high PCB levels.135 The chemicals were mixed into caulking to make it rubbery when applied to interior and exterior building surfaces. As the caulking ages, however, it can disintegrate into PCB-containing particles and vapors that can fall to the ground or other surfaces and infiltrate building ventilation systems.

    In addition,
    2008 - 2009 ANNUAL REPORT / PRESIDENT'S CANCER PANEL 31
a recent study136 found higher leukemia rates among children living in homes where PCBs were found in carpet dust compared to children without this exposure; leukemia rates rose with level of PCB exposure. The findings, however, require additional study to understand ethnic/racial differences among children with equivalent PCB exposure rates.

...I believe it is time for a new human experiment. The old experiment…is that we have sprayed pesticides which are inherent poisons…throughout our shared environment. They are now in amniotic fluid. They're in our blood. They're in our urine. They're in our exhaled breath. They are in mothers' milk….What is the burden of cancer that we can attribute to this use of poisons in our agricultural system?...We won't really know the answer until we do the other experiment, which is to take the poisons out of our food chain, embrace a different kind of agriculture, and see what happens.SANDRA STEINGRABER ITHACA COLLEGE

In the aggregate, registered pesticides contain nearly 900 active ingredients, many of which are toxic. Many of the inert ingredients in pesticides also are toxic, but are not required to be tested for causing chronic diseases such as cancer. For example, xylene is used as the inert ingredient in almost 900 pesticides222 and has been associated with increased risk of brain tumors, rectal cancer, and leukemia.223

Asbestos is classified by IARC as a lung and laryngeal carcinogen, and some evidence suggests it may increase risk for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and multiple myeloma.78 One meeting speaker noted that the World Health Organization, the World Bank Group, international labor organizations, and numerous public health scientists and policymakers have urged a global ban on asbestos. Some countries (e.g., Brazil) have banned asbestos, but its use continues in many nations, including the United States.

    Perchloroethylene and Trichloroethylene

Perchloroethylene (PCE, also known as perc and tetrachloroethylene) is a solvent that has been a mainstay of the dry cleaning industry for decades. It is classified as “reasonably anticipated to be a carcinogen”

by the National Toxicology Program (NTP).77 Approximately 28,000 dry cleaners in the U.S. use perc. Dry cleaning workers who inhale PCE are at risk for liver damage and neurological problems. Some large industrial and commercial dry cleaners emit more than 10 tons of PCE into the atmosphere each year. The public also has been exposed to PCE due to improper disposal that has contaminated soil and drinking water at hundreds of locations across the country.142 High levels of PCE in drinking water are associated with elevated breast cancer risk.143 Animals exposed to high levels of PCE developed kidney and liver tumors.144

Dry cleaning businesses reduced PCE emissions by more than half between 1996 and 2006 by replacing old machinery and improving efficiency. Some have begun using alternative cleaning methods that do not require PCE. The industry, however, has strongly resisted a ban on the chemical. EPA’s most recent amendments (2008) to regulations on the use of PCE by dry cleaners require dry cleaners located in residential buildings (typically the smallest establishments) to phase out perc use by 2020. Larger freestanding and industrial/commercial dry cleaners are required to upgrade equipment to detect and reduce PCE emissions, but are not required to cease using the chemical.145

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is classified by IARC as probably carcinogenic to humans (Group 2A)146 and as “reasonably anticipated to be carcinogenic to humans” by NTP.77 A review of recent studies found evidence that TCE is strongly associated with kidney, liver, and biliary cancers, and is a suspected carcinogen for cervical cancer, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas, and leukemia.147 Occupational exposures are greatest among workers involved in metal degreasing and the manufacture of adhesives, paint removers, varnishes, paints, lacquers, typewriter correction fluids, printing inks, and spot removers. TCE previously was used as a dry cleaning agent.

Children's exposure to particulate air pollution is of special concern because of their greater vulnerability to toxics of all kinds. In 2008, USA Today published a series of articles152 based on its study that used EPA’s model to track the path of industrial pollution and mapped the locations of nearly 128,000 schools to determine the levels of toxic chemicals near schools. Academic researchers who partnered with USA Today to conduct the study found that 20,000 schools—about one in six—are within a half-mile of a major industrial plant.

The Military Needs to Aggressively Address the Toxic Environmental
    Exposures It Has Caused.

Toxic materials produced for and used by the military have caused widespread air, soil, and water pollution across the United States and beyond our borders, including chemical and radiation contamination in and around current and former military installations, materiel production facilities, and mines.

These contaminants, many of which may have serious long-term and latent effects including cancer, are a danger both to military personnel and civilians. Overall, the military has not responded adequately to health problems associated with its operations absent substantial pressure from those affected, advocacy groups, orthe media.

Arginine is a conditionally nonessential amino acid, meaning most of the time it can be manufactured by the human body, and does not need to be obtained directly through the diet. The biosynthetic pathway however does not produce sufficient arginine, and some must still be consumed through diet. Individuals who have poor nutrition or certain physical conditions may be advised to increase their intake of foods containing arginine. Arginine is found in a wide variety of foods, including http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-3 - [4] :

    [ http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Arginine&action=edit&section=4 - edit ] Biosynthesis

Arginine is synthesized from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citrulline - citrulline by the sequential action of the cytosolic enzymes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argininosuccinate_synthetase - argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argininosuccinate_lyase - argininosuccinate lyase (ASL). This is energetically costly, as the synthesis of each molecule of argininosuccinate requires hydrolysis of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adenosine_triphosphate - adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adenosine_monophosphate - adenosine monophosphate (AMP); i.e., two ATP equivalents.

Citrulline can be derived from multiple sources:

    • from arginine via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitric_oxide_synthase - nitric oxide synthase (NOS)
    • from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornithine - ornithine via catabolism of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proline - proline or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamine - glutamine / http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamate - glutamate
    • from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_dimethylarginine - asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) via DDAH

The pathways linking arginine, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamine - glutamine , and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proline - proline are bidirectional. Thus, the net utilization or production of these amino acids is highly dependent on cell type and developmental stage.

On a whole-body basis, synthesis of arginine occurs principally via the intestinal–renal axis, wherein http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epithelial_cell - epithelial cells of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Small_intestine - small intestine , which produce http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citrulline - citrulline primarily from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamine - glutamine and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutamate - glutamate , collaborate with the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proximal_tubule_cell - proximal tubule cells of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidney - kidney , which extract citrulline from the circulation and convert it to arginine, which is returned to the circulation. Consequently, impairment of small bowel or renal function can reduce endogenous arginine synthesis, thereby increasing the dietary requirement.

Synthesis of arginine from citrulline also occurs at a low level in many other cells, and cellular capacity for arginine synthesis can be markedly increased under circumstances that also induce http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitric_oxide_synthase - iNOS . Thus, citrulline, a coproduct of the NOS-catalyzed reaction, can be recycled to arginine in a pathway known as the citrulline-NO or arginine-citrulline pathway. This is demonstrated by the fact that in many cell types, citrulline can substitute for arginine to some degree in supporting NO synthesis. However, recycling is not quantitative because citrulline accumulates along with nitrate and nitrite, the stable end-products of NO, in NO-producing cells. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-4 - [5]

    [ http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Arginine&action=edit&section=5 - edit ] Function

Arginine plays an important role in cell division, the healing of wounds, removing ammonia from the body, immune function, and the release of hormones. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-tapiero-1 - [2] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-stechmiller-5 - [6] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-witte-6 - [7] Arginine, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-7 - [8] taken in combination with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proanthocyanidin - proanthocyanidins http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-8 - [9] or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yohimbine - yohimbine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-9 - [10] , has also been used as a treatment for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erectile_dysfunction - erectile dysfunction .

The benefits and functions attributed to oral supplementation of L-arginine include:

    • Precursor for the synthesis of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitric_oxide - nitric oxide (NO) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-10 - [11]

    [ http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Arginine&action=edit&section=6 - edit ] In proteins

The distributing basics of the moderate structure found in geometry, charge distribution and ability to form multiple H-bonds make arginine ideal for binding negatively charged groups. For this reason, arginine prefers to be on the outside of the proteins where it can interact with the polar environment. Incorporated in proteins, arginine can also be converted to citrulline by PAD enzymes. In addition, arginine can be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methylation - methylated by protein methyltransferases.

    [ http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Arginine&action=edit&section=7 - edit ] As a precursor

Arginine is the immediate precursor of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitric_oxide - NO , urea, ornithine and agmatine; is necessary for the synthesis of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creatine - creatine ; and can also be used for the synthesis of polyamines (mainly through ornithine and to a lesser degree through agmatine), citrulline, and glutamate. For being a precursor of NO, (relaxes blood vessels), arginine is used in many conditions where http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasodilation - vasodilation is required. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arginine#cite_note-tapiero-1 - [2] The presence of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asymmetric_dimethylarginine - asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), a close relative, inhibits the nitric oxide reaction; therefore, ADMA is considered a marker for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vascular_disease - vascular disease , just as L-arginine is considered a sign of a healthy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endothelium - endothelium .

( 3 yrs )  Congress     Has Been Foot Dragging on>>  Americans Ability to Hear

    Where is this BILL???
    ..........................................

    Text of    H.R. 1912    [110th]:

Medicare Hearing Enhancement and Auditory Rehabilitation (HEAR) Act of 2007

    http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-1912 - http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h110-1912

Medicare is specifically prohibited from paying for hearing aids by federal law.

The new legislation would repeal this prohibition and direct the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop coverage policies based on other federal hearing aid programs, such as those

currently offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense through its Tricare health program.

HR1912 also would provide Medicare coverage for auditory rehabilitation services so that Medicare beneficiaries can receive needed ongoing care to optimize their hearing with the use of a hearing aid.

“We must begin a national discussion on how to help seniors afflicted with hearing loss or impairment, especially with more and more baby-boomers suffering from this condition becoming Medicare-eligible,” Bilirakis says.

"As an American with hearing loss, I understand all too well the frustrations associated with this condition.  It makes good sense to help those who suffer from hearing impairment better afford devices, treatments, and services that will improve their quality of life."

    Avoiding the purple pill ?

Taking the evidence for effectiveness, safety, cost, and other factors into account,
if you need a PPI, we have chosen the following as Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs:

    Prilosec OTC
    Generic omeprazole OTC

Another option might be the nonprescription version of Prevacid,

    called Prevacid 24HR.

The Food and Drug Administration recently approved it for sale without a prescription
and it is expected on store shelves in mid-November 2009. We expect it will cost about
    the same as Prilosec OTC.

    Another Vaccine  :/
    ........................................

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause
both acute and chronic disease. The virus is transmitted through
contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person --
    not through casual contact.

Hepatitis B virus can cause an acute
illness with symptoms that last several weeks, including yellowing of
the skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, extreme fatigue, nausea,
    vomiting and abdominal pain.

People can take several months to a year
to recover from the symptoms. Hepatitis B virus infection can also
cause a chronic liver infection that can later develop into cirrhosis
of the liver or liver cancer.

Hepatitis B virus infection is an important occupational hazard for
health workers. Fortunately, however, hepatitis B is preventable with
    a safe and effective vaccine.

    ...............................................................................................

...One to 2 months after completion of the 3-dose vaccination series, HCWs who have contact with patients or blood and are at ongoing risk for injuries with sharp instruments or needlesticks should be tested for antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs).

Persons who do not respond to the primary vaccine series should complete a second three-dose vaccine series or be evaluated to determine if they are HBsAg-positive. Revaccinated persons should be retested at the completion of the second vaccine series. Persons who prove to be HBsAg-positive should be counseled accordingly
