Well, I have had company most of the month of August and have deleted a lot of food supplies, which is ok because we went through a lot of food and it helped to rotate my supplies. So now I probably need to take an inventory of what I have and restock some things. What is everyone going to work on this month?

I'm butchering a sheep next week. I need to inventory my freezers as I've lost control of them and can't find anything. I'm also going to have a go at making my own hand sanitizer.

It's Spring here so I'm sowing tomatoes in the next week and trying not to despair at the proliferation of weeds in my veg beds. This morning the first leaves came out in our orchard. They weren't there yesterday, so it's good to see.

I am new to prepping.

Where should I begin?  What should I start on first?

I believe storing majority of our stuff in the basement (we have no cabin in the woods).

Not stressing on the fact of getting ready.  Just want to do it right.

Please respond.

Thank you

yogi1,if you can afford it,go with the 6 month to one year supply of freeze dried food from some of the commercial companies for each person. Longer if you can afford it.They keep for 25 years and they are also not very heavy,if you have to move everything. If you can not afford to do that, store bought pinto beans, rice and salt to start with. Also some form of cooking oil. If you buy these things in the store, freeze them in a freezer for one day for each pound that you put into the freezers, then take them out and store them in containers that the mice and rats can not get in. The reason for freezing the beans and rice is to kill all of the weevils and larva that comes on the beans and rice naturally, but very few people ever see.You can also buy buckets of beans and rice from the survival companies that is already stored to last 25 years and the prices are not that high, compared to what you get.
Next, you need have at least one .22 cal rifle, one high powered rifle(I recommend an AR-4 in .223 cal or an AK-47 and have at last 7 magazines for which ever rifle you decide on) Then you need a 12 ga. pump shot gun and plenty of Buck shot for it. Depending on how many people you have in your family or group, each person should have their own .22 cal rifle and every one learn to shoot them very accurately. They are the best survival rifle. If you do not know how to shoot, save a lot of time and money buy hiring a certified NRA instructor or a police instructor to teach you to shoot properly and accurately. Add a verity of pistols and rifles as your group sees fit and that you can afford.Have a very large amount of .22 cal ammo.
Next, learn every way that you can learn to purify water. There are many ways to do this and there are many good water purifies on the market. Also learn every way there is to build a fire.A BIC lighter is hard to beat, but have them and many other methods. Have several methods o
f purify water and building a fire on hand all the time. There are several fire building products on the market also. The simplest way to purify water is to boil it for one minute, but that is not always possible.
Next, have plenty of high quality very warm and some waterproof clothes. I think that many people are leaving this out and it is absolutely necessary if you have to leave your home and go on the run. Also have plenty of high quality and warm and water proof sleeping bags or blankets
Next have each person have a back pack and duffel bags so that you can load a lot of stuff up and go. Also, have plenty of hackets and knives. Big survival knives that are tough and small knives for skinng and cooking work.
As you learn more, you can adjust what you want by what you learn. But this is a start. Also,if you are in a big city, get out of it. Never fight or shoot unless it is absolutely necessary. It is your job to survive until society can be put back together. It is not your job to fight firefights or fist fights. But if you have to fight, you have to win,or your family does not survive.Stay out of gangs and crowds. Johnray1

JohnRay that is an excellent list! Yogi, one website that is very helpful as far as prepping goes is survivalistblog.net. At the top of their homepage they have a list "10 Things to Do Right Now". Click on that and you'll find alot of what John suggested, plus a few more things. And on that page, they have a "10 More Things to Do Right Now". Those two lists alone will take you ahead of what 90% of folks out there have, and that's a real good start. Those folks on that site are real helpful answering beginners questions if you're interested. Also somewhere on this site I think it was FluMom that started a good medical preps list.   And if you're into that, you can do a search on YouTube for a lady, "Patriot Nurse" who has alot of good info on medical preps. Hope that helps!

Sugar will last indefinitely so long as it's dry. You may find it becomes a hard lump rather than granular but that's all that sugar cone was. Just hit it with a hammer and smash it up and use it.

Flour doesn't last long. Wholemeal flour goes rancid within months, white flour lasts a couple of years but watch out for bugs and weevils in it. Freeze it for a week before you store it away. A better bet is to store wheat grains and then get a hand grinder.

Yeast is tricky. The moment you open the tub then it starts to lose potency. The best bet are the single use foil sachets of yeast. Just so long as you don't open it.

the best way to store flour is by storing wheat

wheat, under the proper conditions, will last for decades

just make sure you have a high quality grinder

and the stamina to make it goLOL

yeast can be frozen

and should be good for about 3 years or so

another option for bread

is to maintain a sour dough culture

those can be kept alive forever

Nothing in particular with preps, this month. Yesterday I bought a lot of meat on sale, which makes me happy. Ralphs in Southern CA has a sale on pork chops, roasts, and ribs for 50% off. I found a managers special on the larger packs of  Chicken Drumsticks for 5.06$, bought my usual 1$ frozen veggies, boneless, skinless chicken breast was 1.99$/lbs with the Ralphs card (2.99$ without) :) Been eyeing a dehydrator at kmart that is randomly on sale for the back to school deals (not quite sure what typical college aged person (aside from me) would want with a dehydrator.

Next weekend, I think I will try making crockpot bread. Has anyone ever done this before, and what results or tips do you have? :)

I'm jealous. Record high temps here in SoCal. Phew

Well, I had plans to go through my preps and update them based on expiration dates, revised goals, etc, but I'm stuck in a sling for a week and barred from lifting for a month following shoulder surgery. I can do some planning though, I guess. One thing I am shooting for when I'm healthy is more storage space. A friend posted a great idea on Facebook that would allow me to put a bunch of containers under the bed, so I'll work on the design for that while I'm laid up. This is probably fancier than it will end up, but it gives an idea of the concept.

I bought 80 lbs of sweet potatoes off a truck. Peeled 40 lbs, blanched 20 and froze in a light syrup. The other 20 I sliced thin and candied then froze. If anything happens to the freezer I can put the in jars. I will tackle the other 40 lbs next week.

We've had the dehydrator running for over a month. We're drying everything we can't can or freeze. Tomatoes, potatoes, apples and pears. Hopefully we'll be making venison jerky and summer sausage next month.

yogi1 just a suggestion prepping food, buy what you eat, then keep the stock rotated. If there is something you think you might like to try, actually try it first and make sure your family will eat it. Nothing like having 25 cans of Spam if no one in the family likes it, lol. As far as OTC and prescription meds, stock more than you think you need, one round of the flu or any type sickness you go through a lot more meds than you might think.

Great advice, Penham - we've wiped out all our OTC meds with one bout of seasonal flu before now. It's surprising how fast you go through them.

Penham- I learned to love Spam. Unless they live in Hawaii I doubt if most younger people have ever tried Spam. The trick is in the way it's cooked! Here's a link to some very tasty recipes.

I've eaten a lot of Spam as a kid too. Not very often since. However, I've always kept a stack or two on hand just in case I wanted to feel like a kid again. Actually, fried can be better and or a dash of BBQ sauce. But don't be senseless about it. It's something nutritious to have on hand that helps break up the monotony of just tuna and Top Ramen. And it certainly beats eating bugs. I think. Nowadays we have 150-200 cans, maybe even more. And it still only makes up a tiny fraction of all the much tastier stuff. I am lacking venison jerky and sausage though. Where'd ya say you live Irish? Trade you some Spam for some jerky? I grew up on venison jerky. It was the best ever. And almost all of it came right out of the Hollywood hills. My favorite was venison/spinach raviolis. I've made them a couple times recently but they don't keep very long frozen.

onefluover_ I'm in the Arkansas Ozarks. I'm at the very end of the road with national forest on three sides of me! Lots of deer, bear, rabbits and squirrels. My wife said she heard some wild turkeys from the garden last weekend but they're hard to call up! I'd be glad to trade but I have to get a deer first! I smoke mine with hickory a little before drying. The venison/spinach raviolis sound heavenly!

Pelham, I have figured out that for my family we use about one roll a week per person.   I have enough for two years but keep buying just in case. I can tell you I have gone through 4 large Kleenex boxes in 10 days being as sick as I am. I am getting more kleenex next Sam's club trip.

Flumom, I bought about 150 cotton hankerchiefs a few years ago, all different colours but all man size. I've got a cold at the moment and am finding them invaluable. They wash brilliantly. I washed 30 yesterday.

As for a toilet paper alternative, I don't think you can beat squares of polar fleece. I used them as homemade washable baby wipes when my children were small. They are very soft and wash really well. I bought 5m of polar fleece in a sale a few years ago and have it ready to cut up should we need it.

Vicks Nature Fusion (Day Quil) tablets and liquid syrup were on sale at Kmart for 3$ each instead of original price 10.49$. I got the last two 20-tablet packs in the store and supposedly they were sold out for the whole 50 mile radius. (I live in Riverside County in Southern CA) I originally went for Robitussin (also sold out......), but then I saw that sale. Kmart brand liquid Day Quil was on sale, but that gives me nightmares. I hope the name brand tablets do not. I noticed a lot of the OTC medicines for cold/flu were off the shelf and people were yelling at the workers because they did not know when more would come in. One lady had like 5 bottles of the Kmart "Day Quil" in her basket (they are on sale for 3.50$) and some other woman started to complain that some people are buying too many and she needs some too. Glad I got what I could when I did.

How do you stock prescription drugs without your doctor having you locked up for being crazy?
My daughter is insulin dependent and the prescriptions are written for what she'll use monthly.

You can say you are traveling for a while and won't be able to easily pick up your medications. For instance, I am a Kaiser patient, but not everywhere has Kaiser (so when I go for long periods of time to non-Kaiser areas, I have them give me extended amount of medicine.) Normally, they give me three month supplies, if I ask. I had to do that when I lived in Japan too. Some doctors will be understanding to straight forward requests w/out excuses, but it's not always easy to read if your doctor will be willing to do that.

Something that might help. HHS, or one of the GOV sites (i cannot recall right now which one) recommend a 30 day supply of any medications to have on hand (for natural disasters and such), you can use that as your reasoning for asking for a one time extra month supply...this way you would always have between 31-60 days on hand.

Heck if the "government" recommends it how can they refuse you.

Herring fillets in a can are a good source of calories(600) and protein(20 grams)and are extremely cost efficient and since they are packed in oil last a very long time. A good emergency source of protein and calories that require no preparation.
