16-year-old wins Google Science Fair with Ebola test

A high school junior who developed a new ebola test, has won the Grand Prize and a $50,000 college scholarship in the online Google Science Fair competition.

http://www.sfgate.com/search/?action=search&channel=news&inlineLink=1&searchindex=gsa&query=Olivia+Hallisey - Olivia Hallisey  received the award Monday at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, California, where she and the approximately 20 other global finalists presented their projects this week.Hallisey’s ebola test can be done on a four-channel card, where substances known as reagents would react with a patient’s ebola antigens. A silk film would keep the reagents at room temperature, avoiding the need for refrigeration. The test could be done with a sample like saliva within 30 minutes, at a cost of $25 — a financially feasible option for health care providers in developing nations in West Africa, where the disease is epidemic.
