Police: At least 26 dead in Paris, hostage-taking in theater


PARIS (AP / FOX 11) - Two police officials said at least 26 people have been killed in shootings and explosions around Paris Friday, in the deadliest violence in France in decades.

A police official said 11 people were killed in a Paris restaurant in the 10th arrondissement, and about 15 killed in the  http://www.bataclan.fr/ - Bataclan theater , where a hostage-taking is under way.

Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named according to police policy.

Also late Friday, two explosions were heard outside the Stade de France stadium north of Paris during a France-Germany friendly football match. It is unclear if the explosions were linked to the other events.

A police official confirmed one explosion in a bar near the stadium. It is unclear whether there are casualties.

An Associated Press reporter in the stadium Friday night heard two explosions loud enough to penetrate the sounds of cheering fans. Sirens were immediately heard, and a helicopter was circling overhead.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to be publicly named.

The attack comes as France has heightened security measures ahead of a major global climate conference that starts in two weeks, out of fear of violent protests and potential terrorist attacks.

Emilioi Macchio, from Ravenna, Italy, was at the Carillon bar near the restaurant that was targeted, having a beer on the sidewalk when the shooting started. He said he didn't see any gunmen or victims, but hid behind a corner then ran away.

"It sounded like fireworks," he said.

France has been on edge since deadly attacks by Islamic extremists in January on satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a kosher grocery that left 20 dead, including the three attackers.

The restaurant targeted Friday, Le Carillon, is in the same general neighborhood as the Charlie Hebdo offices.

The country has seen several smaller-scale attacks or attempts since, including an incident on a high-speed train in August in which American travelers thwarted a heavily armed Islamic radical trying to attack passengers.

It is really too early to draw conclusions, but it appears that the attacks were co-ordinated and ranged across 7 locations.  Islamist forces so-far top the suspect list.

I think they are saying 158. Been watching nonstop since it started. Some of the reports of those from inside the concert hall were terrifying & heartbreaking. I pray the one guy who posted on Facebook from up in the balcony got out alive.

The story is not finished yet. Proberbly (some) terrorists still with weapons in France. I expect more attacks saterday. Here in the Netherlands asylum-seekers-centers have extraprotection. The fear is that in reaction to the Paris terror-attacks "groups" (extreme right wing, nazi) might attack asylum-seekers, mosques etc. 

When the fighting stays contained to Paris we may be "lucky". Already French borders are closed (means strict border control) and other EU borders will see more control. I also expect more security checks on international airports, train stations. 

The Paris attacks look like done by IS, number of people killed will go up. Europe will not be the same any longer. The Syria/Iraq-war has reached western Europe.

Because Moscow is in another timezone (+2 hrs then Paris) they me (for now) be better in evaluating the info. Russia has a lot of experience with terror attacks.

I am so sorry for her parents...it is the worst thing to lose a child, I know. Your child is a part of you.

We must remember most of these people killed were young adults and there are so many parents who's hearts are totally broken and will never totally mend.

May God bless and ease the pain all of these families.

My school and her school might be considered rivals, but we are all sister schools a part of the same educational system and we hope to honor her memory. I think my school is planning a vigil.
