Much like many billionaires who despite many bankruptcies - i.e. Howard Hughes - eventually emerged as successful - North Korea has made significant progress in its development of nuclear missiles. After the recent launch of two missiles, one which flew over 240 miles, they also have in place missiles that could hit the U.S. on the West Coast and within a short period of time can successfully carry nuclear warheads.

Of course much of the attention has been to missiles fired a high altitude, which the Russians have developed new ones which are low flier and much harder to detect. Also North Korea continues work on its submarine fleet and there are a few which might very well be capable of launching a nuke from off the American west coast.

It is very difficult to cut through the media and sort out the reality of the North Korean military and nuclear threat. They continue on the brink of serious economic problem with many people starving and the spin of mainstream media is that this is all a ploy to be paid more money to ease off.

Time will tell. But it may take longer for the public to be told the severity of the danger than an actual strike on the U.S. by either North Korea or Russia.

This grows far more serious.

This is a significant event and means that North Korea could eventually launch on the U.S. from beyond the 12-mile -limit - probably off the coast of California or Washington State.

The eliminates a great deal of the interception capabiity and limits the response time to an intercept to just a few minutes - not long leisurely countdown seen on most sci-fi movies as you watch them come in from over the pole. It is some I have known about since the 60s and it is serious. It would be nearly impossible to contact the president and get effective permission to take any action as far as launching a counter strike on North Korea in this brief window to act.

Seoul labeled the launch as unsuccessful, saying that the sea-based missile broke into several pieces mid-flight after having flown some 30 kilometers.

The first underwater launch of the North Korean SLBM missile, KN-11, was made on November 27, 2015, and allegedly also resulted in failure.

Following the country’s fourth nuclear test, which had been conducted on January 6, and the subsequent launch of a long-range rocket carrying an earth observation satellite on February 7, the North came under fire from the international community.

The UN significantly expanded the existing sanctions imposed on North Korea in March by banning all exports that might have benefited its operational capabilities.

Earlier this week, the US for the first time imposed sanctions personally targeting Kim Jong-Un.

This is not new - but the secret Taepo Dong 3 - which is secret is.

It must be remembered the the full deployment of this system will not be until 2020 - four years from now.

While they are talking about the Taepo Dong 2 from North Korea - there is quite possibly a TD 3. Now it is very possible that even the TD 2 can reach many targets in the U.S. A new version of this using a 4-stage missile which neither the U.S., China, or Russia have announced or even acknowledged could have an even greater range.

An improved version of the Taepo Dong 2 would likely have a length of 34.0 m, a diameter of 2.4/1.4/0.9 m (for each stage), a launch weight of 68,800 kg, and a range of approximately 8,000 km. The Taepo Dong 3 was reported as having three or possibly four stages based on other missiles in the North Korean arsenal. The first stage is similar to the Musudan (BM-25), the second is similar to the No Dong 1, and the third stage is similar to the Hwasong 6 (‘Scud’ C) variant. 2

It is likely as I just posted that a Taepodong 3 exists and has not been tested. While many of the missiles discussed have 3 stages - clearly some highly efficient and long range ones have 4.

This is not new technology. While the impressive range and highly promoted battle in high atmosphere is all over the media, the simple fact a sub just off the coast beyond the 12-mile limit - launching - as North Korea did a few days ago from a submarine, a nuclear missile would be very difficult to intercept. The Hollywood Dr. Strangeglove event or War Games with missiles incoming for 40 minutes would be reduced to 3-5 minutes. This is the real news and the real threat despite all the mainstream outcry and deployment of THAAD. Can Patriots take out a low flying low trajectory missiled launched 15 miles from the target? They weren't that great in the Gulf Wars and Scuds did get through.

So much like the current mainstream media which is inherently flawed and in the U.S. conveniently filters out a lot of events and facts which are still available in GIM (Global Indepented Media) i.e. CWN - the reports on how effective missiles are at not just intercepting but destroying enemy missiles are not accurate.

We live under the illusion of protection in a world of terrorists with suitcase nukes, cells that camp for years before attacking, and a border that is beyond porous with Isis crossing into the U.S. and operational mingled with others. Welcome to summer 2016. Medclinician

Despite the fact this is being basically ignored by mainstream media - North Korea is making progress as it tries to become nuclear and even if it would be difficult to pull off a nuke on the U.S. the new defensive missile battery in South Korea will now be in place at the end of 2017.

They are a threat and whether or not the West would probably leave a few nuclear craters there once were cities. The missiles launched flew a full 600 kilometers which enables them to target all of South Korea.

This is the real news - and we are not getting it in the midst of the Republican convention.

North Korea is making progress in it's development of a nuclear weapon missile arsenal.  This was a successful launch despite another companion launch failure which traveled a long distance and lobbed a missile - which could have been equiped with a nuclear warhead in Japanese waters.

With all of the politics in the election year in the U.S., no one is paying a lot of attention here except for the Intelligence people and the military. The chances for a nuclear strike on South Korea or Japan are increasing.

Breaking news - North Korea claims it has successfully tested a nuclear warhead that could be mounted on a missile, drawing condemnation from the South over the "maniacal recklessness" of young ruler Kim Jong-Un.

"Our nuclear scientists staged a nuclear explosion test on a newly developed nuclear warhead at the country's northern nuclear test site," a North Korean TV announcer said.

"Our... party sent a congratulatory message to our nuclear scientists... for conducting the successful nuclear warhead explosion test," she said as the South judged it was the North's biggest test yet at 10 kilotons.

The move drew swift condemnation from US President Barack Obama who warned of "serious consequences" and said he had called the leaders of South Korea and Japan to confer over the crisis.

President Park Geun-Hye spoke out against the "maniacal recklessness" of Kim, who since taking control after the death of his father in 2011 has carried out a series of purges and weapons tests designed to show strength and consolidate power.

North Korea is more than an emerging nuclear threat. It has become one with the development of warheads which could be used on its latest ICBMs.

It is hard to remember when any nation has threatened to assassinate the leader of another.  Things are bad enough that Kim Jong Un would order a launch.

The timing on this is amazingly coincidental with the U.S. election. Any type of crisis would allow President Obama to stop the elections and take over the government in the U.S. and even bypass Congress.

I could write a bit about what seems to be an evolving conspiracy to create civil unrest in major cities to justify marshall law.

North Korea has been threatening to do something for years- yet they did not have the nuclear technology to do it - now they do - and with hundreds of thousands of South Korean doing military exercises and tens of thousand of American and ally forces over there - we have the possiblity of World War III.

Would the other nations quickly jump on North Korea? What would China do as massive troops began fighting?  North Korea has a huge standing army ready to go.

It would appear we are so concerned about the U.S. elections and people who have no say at all in what can done now and and ineffectual administration which basically hardly listens to its generals- the worst could happen.

For the life of me, I don't understand why folks are so fixated on ICBMs.  If I had a functioning warhead, I'd put it into a pleasure craft and just go into the harbor of a major city where I'd blow it off.

It would be perfectly undetectable, easy to do, and the number of targets vast.  NYC, LA, SF, take your pick.

You could also do a 9/11 attack and put it into the hold of a commercial airliner, blowing it up over a major city.

DHS tries to keep up with this stuff using radiation sensors etc., but they are easily defeated.

I agree with you CRS. That is the Iranian way is it not-to race around very close and they could easily carry at last a small nuke and take down one of the U.S.'s very costly ships. Sometimes I wonder about the art of spying in today's world. Why tell Kim Jong Un they are going to kill him?  In his absence would his generals launch or just take over the government?

What is missing here is common sense. If North Korea wants to get money out of the world, it isn't going to happen by making nukes and testing them. Obviously we have interceptors in South Korea in place to shoot down whatever they fire if it is has a nuke on it.

What is very scary is that perhaps someone in the U.S. (hint) would like to see this happen. I mean a huge international crisis - election time - and guess what - surprise - war powers act - another 4 years of Obama. After all - with lawyers - it is all about planning.

Thanks, JD!  This was the topic of a made-for-TV movie in the 1980s, "Special Bulletin."
