As the situation in Syria and off the coast of Yemen escalates, we face what could be an escalating global conflict. Pushing this to the edge of the verge of U.S. presidential elections, could actually put in a place a mechansim to halt the vote and declare a state of national emergency.
There is certainly no doubt of the term limit for a U.S. president.

comment: also a president may not act without Congress declaring a war or involving troops in one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Powers_Resolution" rel="nofollow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Powers_Resolution
The War Powers Resolution requires the President notify Congress
within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and
forbids armed forces from remaining for more than 60 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days" rel="nofollow - days , with a further 30-day withdrawal period, without a Congressional authorization for use of military force (AUMF) or a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_war_by_the_United_States" rel="nofollow - declaration of war by the United States . The resolution was passed by two-thirds of Congress, overriding a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_veto" rel="nofollow - presidential veto .
It has been alleged that the War Powers Resolution has been violated in the past – for example, by President https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton" rel="nofollow - Bill Clinton in 1999, during https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_bombing_of_Yugoslavia" rel="nofollow - the bombing campaign
in Kosovo. Congress has disapproved all such incidents, but none has
resulted in any successful legal actions being taken against the
president for alleged violations. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Powers_Resolution#cite_note-Library_of_Congress_War_Powers_Reference-2" rel="nofollow - [2] comment: Clearly the election is becoming a circus. Will a first strike be called by the U.S. in one of the flash point areas if Russia sends in more troops or one of the American or Allied ships are sunk by a Russian or proxy missile?
What would happen? America would no longer be a true democracy and all the executive orders since Kennedy would become effective. Yes, it's all over the religious channels. Some people are seeing this as the End of Days and whether it is - is a matter of personal belief.
Yet, things are a mess and without strong leadership and diplomacy - there will be a war. At the very least with incidents of violence and a break down of law enforcement in large cities, they could be anarchy. All of this would create a crisis which could result in a declaration which would keep the current administration in office. Sales of weapons and bullets are on the rise and some people are wondering, if it all goes down hard, will they be forced to protect themselves.
Today October 15, 2016 nearing the U.S. Presidential Election - will there be one?
