I suppose that depends on how you define great:

It will be truly great if your definition is rich (as I suspect Trump defines it - it is what he understands, after all).

But, truly diminished if your definition is fair, caring, genuinely Christian or just civilised (as will be judged by many of its people and much of the international community).

if you're asking if I'm thrilled to have a 'real president' again who actually loves this country and cares about the people already here and citizens, then 'yes, I'm thrilled!!!'.

and yes, I'm still quite disturbed to find that Hillary's emails contained so much disgusting material about her private life.  Many rumours about her for years but it was amazing and sickening to see just how bad the truth really was about her.  Also interesting to see that a national pedophile ring was busted the same weekend that Comey let her off of charges for the second time and he led it up.  The timing was pretty amazing....

When he said he wants to 'drain the swamp' it wasn't just about politics.  He wants those scum gone who felt they needed those little kids for their amusement.  I hope he gets rid of ALL the slime and undoes most of what Obama did to us.

That's the bill that they were forced to draft to win the approval of the Freedom Caucus. Moderate Republicans like Fred Upton are thankfully backing away from it because of the lack of coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Donald Trump does not think US should copy Australia's health system, White House says

As Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull flies back to Australia following a meeting with US President Donald Trump, the White House has clarified Mr Trump's comments calling Australia's universal healthcare system "better" than the US system.

Mr Turnbull flew out of New York after a breakfast meeting with business leaders, including billionaire Michael Bloomberg, following his  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-05/donald-trump-plays-down-malcolm-turnbull-tension-in-ny-meeting/8499146" rel="nofollow - 45-minute private meeting with Mr Trump on Thursday .

The meeting happened almost three hours late after  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-05/us-house-passes-healthcare-bill-in-major-trump-victory/8499138" rel="nofollow - Mr Trump postponed it to remain in Washington while a bill to overturn much of former president Barack Obama's signature healthcare law  passed the House of Representatives, a move further away from a guarantee of universal coverage.

The US leader raised eyebrows when he told Mr Turnbull shortly after the bill passed that Australia had "better health care than we do".

But the White House has since clarified those comments, saying the US President was simply saying nice things to an ally and did not think his country should adopt a similar approach.

"The President was complimenting a foreign leader on the operations of their healthcare system. It didn't mean anything more than that," White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at a news briefing.

"I think he believes that they have a good healthcare system for Australia. What works in Australia may not work in the United States," she said.

Mr Trump also tweeted on Saturday that "everybody" had better health care than the US, but the system would "soon be great".

Independent scorekeepers at the Congressional Budget Office have not yet analysed  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-05/what-we-know-about-donald-trumps-great-plan-to-reform-healthcare/8499446" rel="nofollow - the bill passed on Thursday .

But they estimated an earlier version would have led to 24 million fewer Americans with insurance coverage than under current law.

Turnbull hails 'history and strength' of alliance

Mr Turnbull described his meeting with Mr Trump — the pair's first meeting since a  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-02/donald-trump-phone-call-that-rocked-the-special-relationship/8235388" rel="nofollow - testy phone call over a refugee deal  struck by the Turnbull Government and the Obama administration — as very positive.

He said North Korea, the Islamic State group and global trade were all discussed.

"We talked about the relationship, the alliance — we talked about its history and its strength," Mr Turnbull said.

White House officials said the US-Australia refugee deal still stood, but remained a "raw nerve" for Mr Trump.

The pair also attended a gala dinner commemorating the 75th anniversary of the battle of the Coral Sea, while white house and prime ministerial staff also met separately.

Mr Trump said he would "absolutely" visit Australia as President, with a possible window in November when a series of leadership summits are scheduled in the region, but no dates have been set.

Good question with complex answers:

a) this would put the US private health insurance business out of business!  These are some of the most powerful corporations in the country, who employ tens of thousands.  Aetna, Blue Cross, Humana, etc. would fight to the death to prevent single payer.

b) we would have to tax the rich to pay for this, and they seem to run the whole show over here.  Trump's revision of the Affordable Care Act hands a massive tax cut to the wealthy.

c) the American drug companies, who provide most of the advanced drugs worldwide, would not like it either.  They have us by the throat, since other countries like Australia negotiate deep discounts for access to their markets.  American consumers foot the bill.

We do have an excellent "single payer" prototype in our Medicare system, and if they offered Medicare to anyone with a pre-existing condition, it would go far to help right the ship.  However, I don't think we have a chance of doing this without a new administration.

Frustrating for sure!

The people who thought the ACA was too radical would probably view a single payer system as being akin to all-out socialism, carbon. It would take a huge shift in people's thinking to accept it.

And as Chuck said, it's become a huge business over here, and the healthcare providers and their friends in Washington would fight tooth and nail to prevent the US from adopting a more efficient and cheaper system along the lines of Australia, the UK and Canada. They effectively managed to demonize all three in many people's eyes when Obamacare was first being proposed.

This is the problem right now - you have groups like the Freedom Caucus who clearly don't understand (or care about) the consequences of having access to healthcare denied.

I'm not a socialist.  But, I could probably be described as a bit pink around the edges.

Your point is a valid one, Carbon.  People only usually do things that help themselves.  The political movers and shakers take that into consideration.

For instance the heavily taxed rich often move elsewhere and if you rely on them too heavily for your income, you end up out of pocket.  But if that taxation is not too ornerous, the effort of moving is too great and you can continue to benefit to a smaller extent.  Besides why should anyone try to earn large amounts of money only to have to give it up to help a waste of space?

But an inclusive healthcare system helps everyone.  It can drive the costs down because the suppliers have only one purchaser to impress and the pressure to keep their only customer is huge.  It removes a gigantic burden from the security services working within the country.  There will still be junkies breaking the law to feed their habit, but no one doing an armed robbery to fund their families treatment for "legitimate" illnesses.

In other words, there is a center ground that can keep both sides happy and you just pointed out where it lies.  Sadly I cannot see America occupying that space: as JD said there are too many vested interests manipulating the voting system.  I am so happy I live here, I am glad for you too, Carbon.  I do wish I could help some more of the US's folk though. It is both a sadness and a shame.

Hi, Carbon.  I guess we have more in common than I thought.  Darwin is my hero too and technically I am an atheist.  The necessity to look after the sick and injured is obvious.  If Darwin, Einstein and Flemming etc. got injured or died of something horrible when they were teenagers our present society would not exist as we know it.  Some people believe that the theory of evolution is wrong, because they point out instances of punctuated evolution.  However, Darwin's theories are not affected by this in reality, because genetic change can be caused by natural events that limit the numbers of a single species, temporarily, such as a solar flare (radiation) big lumps of rock from space, etc..

Also, getting back to the health service, it creates a more caring society.  Now I believe in the right to bear arms (How else can you get rid of a government you really hate) and I guess that makes me extremely unpopular.  I am not a socialist, just a rather wet, deeply blushing Tory.  We need our businessmen.  We need our scientists, which I am willing to pay taxes for.  We, sure as hell, need an independent police force controlled by a WRITTEN constitution that is inviolate.  I look upon the Australians as my brothers and sisters, due to my New Zealand upbringing and my Canadian mother (that was also one of Britain's colonies) and it really hurts when I see Canada's government sucking up to some of the more extreme-right ideas of America.  I have a lot of American friends from my military days and it hurts to hear that some of them are ill and even dying through the lack of a health service.  For many cannot either afford private medicine or the colossal expense of a capitalist driven insurance system.

As far as your grandchildren are concerned, if they are as pretty or as beautiful and intelligent as my suntanned, slant-eyed mum, then damn good luck to them.  I can't stand the racist sh*t in America and what is creeping in in Britain.  Hopefully our PM will straighten that out.

Remember the motto: "Non illigitimi carborundum!"  All the best, mate.

Ps. After Brexit, if Oz is not too pi$$ed off with us, hopefully the whole Anzac zone will allow us to travel backwards and forwards on just a passport.  THEN I CAN COME HOME!!

Federal budget 2017: Health sector backs lifting of Medicare rebate, mental health spending

Share

Health groups have largely given the federal budget the thumbs up, calling it a win for Medicare and patients.

Australian Medical Association president Michael Gannon welcomed lifting the Medicare rebate freeze saying "the Government has claimed back a lot of the goodwill it lost with its disastrous 2014 budget".

He said lifting the freeze from the start of July meant patients would be more likely to be bulk billed when they visit GPs and specialists.

"This means that we will not see patients thinking twice before visiting doctors," he said.

"The changes to the safety net are good for pregnant women, people with chronic mental health problems and good for patients with cancer, who will need a lot of visits in a short time."

The Consumers Health Forum chief executive Leanne Wells said the staged removal of the Medicare freeze should reduce pressure on Australia's high out-of-pocket health costs.

"This health budget is a commendable attempt to rebalance priorities while seeking to establish a platform that provides hope for a future more effective health system that is both responsive to consumer needs but also delivers best bang for the buck," Ms Wells said.

But she said the budget falls short on health prevention.

The Public Health Association's Michael Moore said it was pleasing to see Medicare back on track.

The union representing nurses and midwifes said they have been "the big losers" in the budget.

Federal secretary Lee Thomas said nurses and midwives would be significantly affected by increased university fees and the lower repayment threshold.

She was also concerned about the four-year plan to unfreeze the Medicare rebate.

"We say that's far too long, the indexation should in fact be replaced in this coming financial year," she said.

Mental health gets budget boost

Ms Thomas said she welcomed the increased funding for mental health and suicide prevention.

Mental health expert Professor Pat McGorry said the budget was a winner for mental health research and treatment.

Butterfly Foundation chief executive Christine Morgan said she was pleased to hear Treasurer Scott Morrison refer to eating disorders in the same sentence as other serious mental illnesses.

Patients with severe eating disorders will be eligible for part of a new $80-million fund for people with severe mental illnesses.

The Rural Doctors Association also welcomed the greater investment in mental health, in particular access to telehealth and telemedicine for psychology services.

"The mental health burden in rural communities is massive and its important we see that investment," the Association's president Dr Ewen McPhee said.
