Interesting that they found similar mutations in both humans and poultry. Influenza is an RNA virus, and it's incredibly sloppy when it reproduces. Most of it's "offspring" are such poor copies that they're sometimes classed as quasispieces, and the mutations are such that they're simply not viable. This is significant in that a change has taken place that apparently still leaves it able to infect two different hosts. Thankfully the contacts didn't show signs of infection - with luck, the changes don't move it any closer to a human strain.

Such a mutation would kill the chicken “in a few days”.

While there was no indication the mutation would have a greater direct impact on humans, it could lead to more infections in people, given the higher risk of infection among poultry.

More than 100 people have died from bird flu this winter and many provinces have suspended the live poultry trade.

Looking on the bright side (if there is one) becoming symptomatic in poultry would definitely make it easier to track, I guess. It's scary that it's expanding it's list of compatible cellular receptors though, because that increases the chances of it being able to find a way into our respiratory tract.
