This winter, my wife and I have been walking a dog for an older man who broke his hip in a fall on the ice.  Yesterday we were in his house after a walk and he commented on some family photos on the wall "That' my (paternal) Grandfather"  and "That's my (paternal) Grandmother, who died of the Spanish Sickness."

I had thought that the Spanish Flu of 1918 as been so far away time wise, but suddenly hearing of it talked in an everyday family setting (and not on a flu forum) referring to a Grandmother made it seem so much nearer in time.

Interesting!  My father, born June 21, 1912, had the Spanish flu as a young boy.  He told me that his mother rubbed him down with rubbing alcohol to bring his high fever down, and this likely saved his life.

Dad lived until March 22, 2003, so he had a remarkably long life!  He had great stories to tell from WWII Pacific Theater (he was a US Navy officer in Hawaii).

Be safe!
