Some questions have been raised about the American NSA's role in all this.  It seems that they originally identified the weakness in the Microsoft system.  NSA¨s own computer systems where hacked and this information about the bug seems to be part of what was hacked.

The question (that I have not seen answered) is "did they informed Microsoft before the hack on NSA?"

In all the early BBC reports they referred to NSA as the source of the information that enabled the cyber attack - so main stream journalism is pointing to NSA to provide answers.

Cybersecurity researchers have identified a second ongoing global cyberattack that has quietly hijacked hundreds of thousands of computers around the world, including many in the United States, for a massive cryptocurrency mining operation.

While investigating the WannaCry ransomware attacks, researchers at the cybersecurity firm Proofpoint stumbled upon another “less noisy” form of malware called Adylkuzz that, the firm says, has likely generated millions of dollars in cryptocurrency for the unknown attackers.
