It was a short respite!

CHP notified of human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) in Fujian

Hong Kong (HKSAR) -      The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (August 4) monitoring a notification from the National Health and Family Planning Commission that one additional human case of avian influenza A(H7N9) was recorded from July 28 to August 3 in Fujian, and strongly urged the public to maintain strict personal, food and environmental hygiene both locally and during travel.

The 58-year-old male patient in Fujian was known to have had exposure to a live poultry farm and had onset on July 19.

Travellers to the Mainland or other affected areas must avoid visiting wet markets, live poultry markets or farms. They should be alert to the presence of backyard poultry when visiting relatives and friends. They should also avoid purchasing live or freshly slaughtered poultry, and avoid touching poultry/birds or their droppings.

Maybe it's just the timing (99 years since Spanish flu reared it's ugly head), but I can't help drawing parallels with the way H7N9 has behaved this year. The first wave of H1N1 appeared toward the end of the flu season in 1918, and continued into the summer months before petering out. The second - and deadliest - wave followed a few months later. Hopefully I'm just reading too much into it, but it does have me a lot more concerned than usual.

JD- The first noticeable wave of H1N1 was at the end of the 1918 flu season. This is the 5th wave of H7N9 but would any one have noticed the few deaths in the first waves in China if they hadn't been looking for H5N1? I doubt it! If H1N1 originated in China as some speculate, it probably developed much the same as H7N9, slowly at first and then gathering steam. It was probably brought here by Chinese laborers and then carried on to Europe. The next year could be interesting!
