Subject: Hurricane Harvey-Trump scores a Win

It is interesting to watch the media squirm as U.S. President Donald Trump scores a a win in his handling of the disaster in Texas and possibly Louisiana.
What can they do? So far he is doing a great job and preparing to fly to Texas, not just over it, and has already mobilized help and is done the best of any president in handling a disaster in decades.
Already Fox and CNN prep to find anything wrong or evil in his dealings, to catch him in a single line in Twitter, to trap him as he arrives in Texas to possibly be a hero.
"He can't handle it - he won't be able to handle it"
CNN correspondent Jim Acosta, a constant critic of President Donald Trump, https://twitter.com/Acosta/status/901059918152728578" rel="nofollow - tweeted (i.e. posted on a social media network) about what the Trump administration is going to do to keep Texans safe:
Now is the winter of our discontent,
made glorious summer by this sun of York was coined by Shakespeare and put into print in Richard III,
1594. The 'sun of York' wasn't of course a comment on Yorkshire weather
but on King Richard. In this play Shakespeare presents an account of
Richard's character that, until the late 20th century, largely formed
the popular opinion of him as a malevolent, deformed schemer. Historians
now view that representation as a dramatic plot device - necessary for
the villainous role that Shakespeare had allocated him. It isn't
consistent with what is now known of Richard III, who in many ways
showed himself to be an enlightened and forward-looking monarch. The
discovery of Richard's skeleton under a car park in Leicester has
provided precise evidence of the extent of his deformity. While being
somewhat curved Richard's spinal deformity has now been shown to have
been exaggerated and deliberately faked in some portraits.
comment: so amidst their dreams the Democrats stir hoping somehow, someway, in a single line said or an act done by Trump, they can completely invalidate whatever he does in shining where many other presidents have failed.
Funny mouth, funny hair, evil, bad nasty and racist Trump showing love and compassion for Texas, what I consider a mini-nation that could probably exist without the U.S.
Reality check and time for ... The Real News.
Almost every significant win and gain by President Trump, including a soaring stock market, a huge reduction in illegal immigration, a solid support for manufacturing, U.S. industry and a sincere try to force the stubborn Democrats to fix a disastrous Obama care and pass tax relief for Americans - has all been ignored as they desperately argue over how many angels can dance on the head a of pin.
This was a classic debate over nothing of the clergy in Medieval and unenlightened Europe.
Having attended a church service Trump ended his oath of office with the significant words - "So help me God".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=820BKHVjyP0
Despite an ending series of attacks and stalking by the mainstream media - we now see a person with compassion and intelligence moving to help the people in Texas and promising to back them 100% in their struggle which continues.
As I visited my doctor yesterday day after a serious heart attack on August 22, 2017 where I almost died and entered a neutral sex bathroom in the new VA Clinic, I found myself thinking, and thanking God that despite all the social chaos and claims, President Trump is trying his best to beyond the words and hypocrisy of the last administration, to draw upon the strength and commitment to show the world that America cares about its people and will unite in a tragedy, while the love and decency in Texas for their neighbors, not just friends, shines like beacon to show us how people should act and behave and love each other in a moral and enlightened society.
And so as I left intensive care and returned to post here on AFT - and called Dr. John Ray and asked him - Will the media not stop stalking him?
Not likely.
Walking through a minefield of reporters Trump heads for Texas and I hope his words will be remembered and that God will help him make America great - again - by showing sincere caring and actions far more than words for those whose lives are in danger. My prayers are with you Texas and with our nation as we face some of the greatest challenges to survive in a truly dangerous world.

Propaganda before people? That is obviously Trump's agenda. Gong to church makes him appear Chrisitian. But it neither makes him one, nor makes him a moral person.
I have no argument with the comments about the local Texans. They have shown great love and care for their neighbors.

That is pretty dramatic proof! There always were climate "bombs" before, the scary bit is the escalation of size and frequency - and the escalation of the escalation.
I wonder how big things will have to be for him to put 2 and 2 together to make 4.

Ty and the real test of all of it will be over time. I still honestly believe in a war or conflict or when you are in a corner, it is the like the hero jumping off a cliff when pursued - and it appears it would be to their death and yet - they make it.
The wild card has changed history many times and won many battles. I just want people to give the guy a chance and do recognize what he is doing to help - versus a media which is bitter and can be so dishonest.
As for the saint part, many of the greatest religious leaders, Paul for one, were no saints and yet now are. It is what a person does, not what a person has done, that tells us what they really are. Trump just arrived in Texas. He has organized and even was acting to set things up before the worst of the storm even hit.
Other presidents golfed (Obama) while people drowned. Doing what is right - what is correct is the highest moral ground.
Expect the best from people. Believe in them and often they will surprise you and even people who have known them all their lives and amazed - for you and because of your faith in them - they will do what is right.

Going there offers no help.
GOING THERE OFFERS NO HELP!
GOING THERE OFFERS NO HELP!!
Do I keep repeating it, or did you hear the first time?
The Presidential entourage gets in the way of help.
This is great for Trump's reputation, but is of NO HELP to the Texans suffering.
Donating some of his vast personal wealth would help. He can't actually help personally as, being the President, he is a virtual prisoner of the system. Saying he is going there for humanitarian reasons, does not make the reason humanitarian, or even caring.
This is a publicity stunt. He can't help, he can only get in the way - AND HE KNOWS IT.

Thank you Med for telling the truth in a clearly anti-Trump discussion group.
I voted for him, believe in him and am grateful for all that he has already accomplished and hope that Congress gets their act together to support Trump's agenda.
Is he perfect? Nope, but he is definitely better than Clinton or Obama and is actually trying to build up our country instead of tear it down. Is he a Christian? I think so... does that automatically make him no longer a sinner? nope. We are all sinners even after we're saved.
Look in history and notice in the Bible how many times God used flawed men to do his will. He uses them over and over and over again.
I want the MSM to stop telling lies and start just telling the truth. I don't want to him them push their agendas any longer. I'm sick of it.

NC Girl, surprisingly, I agree with most of that. The "lies" of the mainstream media however are, present, but less than the porkies he tells. As I keep repeating, The media is constrained by oversight, Trump is only caught out by accident.

Thank you nc_girl. There was an eye-opener today that truly disturbed many anti-Trumpers in San Francisco near where I live in Monterey.
U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., stunned a San Francisco audience Tuesday when she said that if President Trump "can learn and change," he could “be a good president.” The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Feinstein made the comments during a sold-out Herbst Theater interview. She was onstage with Ellen Tauscher, a former Bay Area congresswoman. The paper described the event as a “political lovefest” — pointing out that Feinstein is wildly popular in San Francisco, where she served as mayor for a decade. She was first elected to the Senate in 1992, after a failed bid for governor of California. Toward the end of the evening, Feinstein reportedly shocked the crowd when she declined to say that Trump should be impeached and then told the audience that they should be prepared to see Trump complete his four-year term.
Feinstein serves on both the Senate Intelligence Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee, both of which are investigating Russia’s alleged involvement in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. “The question is whether he can learn and change. If so, I believe he can be a good president,” she said.
The report said, “the crowd reacted with stunned silence, broken only with scattered “No’s and a few hisses and some nervous laughter.” The article said that kind of talk is “never heard in Democratic circles.”
comment: I truly approach this on neutral ground and every president we have had is human, has flaws, and skeletons in their political closets. The bottom line in being a president is a learning situation with a learning curve. No one is truly 100% prepared for what they face when intelligence people brief them on how things "really are" versus what the public had been told. Diane Feinstein is on the intelligence committee and most certainly knows the truth about the investigations currently going on and more than the press.
Most of the allegations have been smoke and mirrors and had there been anything solid, the liberals would not be hopping from issue to issue as most attacks fail without any lack of fuel or substance. The stock markets continue to consistently go up. Faith in America and even more so, businesses and a drop in unemployment is a reality.
As Lincoln once said "You can't please all the people all the time. You can please all of the people some of the people some of the time, but if you can't please all of the people all the time." Or precisely
After a recent experience with a candidate, I was reminded of the famous words from poet John Lydgate, later adapted by President Lincoln – and appearing in various permutations: “You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”.
There are some good journalists, but we have seen a rather solid and consistent attack on Trump unlike any other president in history. Also if you will look at the numbers for foreign leaders, many of them have and even lower approval rating than Trump. This includes the Prime Minister of the U.K.
The wave of global criticism globally for many leaders is not a sign of a more informed public. It is a sign of people who are overwhelmed with TMM (too much misinformation).
The press is an extremely powerful entity. Most people do not check to see if news stories are accurate and just accept them. They will riot, be violent, and even kill people based on information that is inherently false.
Unfortunately, in America, this applies to many areas of our life where drugs (i.e. medicine) often does not do what it supposed to, groups seeking money blatantly lie as much of it goes to the organization and far less to those they claim to help, and daily news which is more like history rewritten for those who watch it to shock them.
Yes, shock is a value learned in the past in late-night T.V. ads that suddenly got louder and the guy would stand in a clown suit selling used cars. They were irritating. So the media has learned the being basically annoying is the way to get attention - and tearing people up - the forte of National Enquirer and made-up stories about movie stars - gets more readers.
They are no longer reliable or truly credible and we need Real News - from people at the scene - and the whole fabric of Twitter to get around misquotes of what is said or happens.
Trump has scored a win. He did what he said he would do and he was out there trying to help and will go back and try to get congress to help Texas. Whether his wife Melania wore stiletto heels when she got on the plane, she was wearing tennis shoes when her feet stepped down on the Texas runway from Air Force One.
She has been a noteworthy first lady and is loyal and supportive of her husband.
You did a good thing Donald Trump in Texas. Different than two other presidents, especially Bush during Katrina that totally messed up.
The liberals need to learn the concept of being positive and that you create your world by your attitude towards it. If you want a short and unhappy life, you can criticize everything, and ignore facts that prove you wrong.
People have a right to express their opinions and say them without being attacked. Any group that violates that right for others is guilty of the same oppression and fascism they are protesting against.
And now for Louisiana - the ghosts of hurricanes past - Katrina - it isn't over by a long shot.

When our Conservative (Republican) government came into power, the Chancellor of the Exchequer (money guy) found a note on his desk saying: "Sorry there is no money left." That was true. Our previous Labour (Democrat) government had spent it all on social assistance projects - which in fairness had made life peachy for a while.
Poor Theresa May (current PM) is trying to settle our debts, before we sink under them The subsequent austerity programmes HURT and to some extent she is taking the blame for this (very unfairly I think).
Despite this she is far, far less unpopular than Trump. Our Foreign Minister (Boris Johnson) is seen as a buffoon, but unlike Trump who is laughed at, he is laughed with. It is a big distinction. Despite his tomfoolery, he is understood to be very canny and very much liked. Even the Chancellor is understood to be doing a necessary thing. Their policies, though unpopular with Labour supporters (for reasons I will get to) are logical and necessary. Overall we "Get it".
The Labour party in Britain as been taken over by a Stalinist influenced clique, who worship their leader Corbin in the same unreasoning manner that the Chinese cultural revoloutionists worship Mao Tse Tung and as a section of the Trump supporters worship Him. The problem for Britain is that if Theresa May falls and the Corbinites rise to power, you will have a communist influenced Britain that would no longer be the ally that we have been up until now. But, instead a nation that counted the left wing European and Asian countries as their allies- HEAVEN FORBID!
Like us, the US is facing some difficult times. Unlike us, most of the policies Trump wants to instigate do not make the same economic sense. Our pound is falling because of worries about the colossal, historical changes Brexit will bring; America's dollar is falling over worries about Trump, his inability to pass new legislation, and his lack of understanding of the consequences when he occasionally succeeds. The tumbling dollar is not all bad news; it helps the export businesses after all. But, it is evidence that the financial movers, shakers and planners (the smart, the powerful and the educated) are seriously worried about the state of American politico/economic health. "Follow the money" if you want to find out what id really happening.
The dollar is falling even faster than the pound, by the way and our poor currency has lost nearly a quarter of its worth.

"To those of you affected by this storm we are praying for you and we are with you every single step of the way. To those Americans who have lost love ones, all of America is grieving with you and our hearts are joined with yours forever. "
President Donald Trump to the victims of the Harvey storm in Texas and Louisiana.
comment: What more compassionate statement with spiritual values could be said to those suffering? When have we ever seen this before for any president - with over 70% of America - Christians? We need to get back to our moral and basic values and faith we once had in America. More than ever - we need divine intervention to protect and watch over our country.

unlike all the other prez's, Trump came with ALL the needed heads of the depts that would be needed to get the info from the "on the ground" guys/gals so they could get to work ASAP. He's been lauded by the governor of Texas over and over for being so prepared and having everything in place and ready to go BEFORE Harvey hit AND for the coordination and communication between local, state and federal groups.
Did he inherit some of this from those who came before him, probably, but not ALL of it. Just give him credit for what he does right and stop nit picking and trying to find everything wrong with him.
I hated Bill Clinton and Obama but I did give them credit when it was due. ie Bill Clinton actually worked with the GOP in congress to pass Newt's Contract with America.

I am glad to hear that Trump and his administration set plans in place to help Houston before the Hurricane hit.
Looking at the disaster images it does not seem to have worked very well. I could be wrong, it might have been even worse had he not prepared beforehand. I don't think I have misread it but, who knows?

Trump order undermines rebuilding better for future floods
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Two weeks
before Harvey's flood waters engulfed much of Houston, President Donald
Trump quietly rolled back an order by his predecessor that would have
made it easier for storm-ravaged communities to use federal emergency
aid to rebuild bridges, roads and other structures so they can better
withstand future disasters.
Now,
with much of the nation's fourth-largest city underwater, Trump's move
has new resonance. Critics note the president's order could force
Houston and other cities to rebuild hospitals and highways in the same
way and in the same flood-prone areas."
I've got to stop
I could literally do this ALL day
shooting fish in a barrel would be more of a challenge

I guess you could call me a "Friend of the Swamp"....I'm not an employee of the federal bureaucracy, but I serve as their subject matter expert on all sorts of bioterrorism and cybersecurity stuff.
The simple fact is that Trump's border wall is dead....Congress will never, ever appropriate that kind of money when the Flood Insurance program is broke, Texas is on its knees begging for reconstruction aid, and other needs are pressing.
Pres. Trump didn't cause Houston to happen, that was the result of decades of poor urban planning, ignoring the inevitable climate change consequences (get ready for more of the same), and stonewalling on infrastructure while pursuing political goals from both sides.
Given all of this, I'd enjoy Pres. Trump acknowledging that climate change is NOT a Chinese plot, and see him take some leadership on the issue. I don't have high hopes for this however.

Sadly, referring to fact #2, life is even harder when your President is stupid.
"Climate change is a myth."
Our wonderful Chuck has pointed out that there are several high-level biosecurity labs in the flood zone,
A peroxide manufacturing plant has just exploded, destroyed by the flood waters.
That level of flooding across two states has to be followed by disease, The vast majority of Americans are not stupid enough to drink flood waters, so any chance of cholera is both slight and limited in scope. but what about zika, malaria and a host of other water-borne insect/paracitic stuff? Most of those don't need to be injested.
If that is not scary enough, the climate change, which is claimed to be "a hoax" by Trump and his entourage of science denying idiots, will bring weather like this and worse more and more frequently.*
Once upon a time "Darwin awards"** were a personal thing. Sadly this may grow over the years to be the biggest case of death-through-stupidity in human history.
*Hot air moves more quickly and holds more water.
**Darwin awards are given to those who improve the overall intelligence of the human race by removing themselves from the gene pool.

It sometimes amazes me how a day after I post things and rant - the same rants appear on the mainstream in places. I thought to myself watching Fox News this morning and Hannity - well good - someone read what I said.
Also through my mind went the phrase - God help me to change the things I can, accept the things I cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference.
There have been moments I have considered not even reading the mainstream media at all and wondered if people could get by with alternate sources to keep up on what is happening. I have to admit Hannity - you being a professional - you did this much better than I ever could - and the dings as the left continued to make truly stupid statements in the face of the reality of a Trump whose basis of getting elected was that he cared for the common people and workers that had been forgotten by special interest groups and congress people. Forget Fox's made up poll of over 50% whining about Trump. We saw their polls all during the election taken by clearly not an accurate sample of the voters. They were wrong. When they kind find a poll that agrees with them, they do one.
Even so, a moment of respect for Fox for putting out the Real News this morning.

Just because he says he cares about people does not mean Trump actually does, Med.
I'm sorry there were three two syllable words in that sentence and one three syllable one. I will try again.
Trump lies. He loves cash not folk. There is proof of this, but I need to use long words to tell how,
Long words: bankruptcy = not got to pay debts
medicaid = treat poor sick folks who have no cash
Diverting funds = take cash from aid for floods and put it in to wall to keep some folk out
Zenophobia = folk like me good, folk not look like me bad.
publicity = Say what makes me look good
humanitarian = what Trump wants to look like
Christian = follows Christ, tries to love all folk
Hypocrite = says one thing means or does other things
Propaganda = tell lies to fool folk like tweets, or twist truth to fool folk like Fox news.
Now you know what the words mean, you can work out what I said in other posts.
Does it help to have it in small words?

Small words are always good as in "Actions speak louder than words".
or "head in the sand" as in ostrich.
For eight years we have endured millions of words and very little help for the American people. Despite the continued ramblings, the approval rate for Congress is 15%. This is where the problem lies and where it needs to be solved. This takes money and yet we need a reduction in taxes for the middle class. We have a media who is giving us false information and selectively ignoring significant reality.
What has happened is people have gotten elected on the platform of being champions for special interest groups, certain races, gender, and alternate life styles. This got them votes and promoted them to their level of incompetence. We have congress people and senators who are not qualified to run a business, are not well educated, and shameless represent minorities and immigrants versus the American people as a whole. Government is a business and if not well run - people suffer.
We can drain the swamp but still the critters won't leave. At least we can put them to work and shame them into doing what is right for Americans or they will gain zero seats in Congress next year.
50% of Americans voted for Trump. All the Trump bashing which will never end and accusations of how he is this or that is not of any use or value to our country. This endless personal vendetta is futile. He is our president. We can support him and ask congress to work with him to better our country or the Democrats can lose all credibility, promote violence, ignorance, and anarchy and pout - or we can move on.
I would like to see us move on. For Congress to roll up their sleeves, pass bills to fix our medical system, taxes, immigration, and lighten up on businesses so they can hire more people. Wall Street is at all time high and even our jobless rate is down.
The press is oblivious as are the far left whose purpose in life is to hunt and destroy our President.
Despite the news and continuing efforts by people to destroy our country, it will get better. People will go back to work and make a living and get off welfare and food stamps. They will have pride in themselves, and their families, and have less time to rant and more money to spend and a better life.
The points that were made on the video I just posted were rock solid. The minds of people have been so manipulated and poisoned many will never see reality or know what is going on.
America was a disaster for 8 years. It is time that changed and we once more assumed the position of the greatest most powerful country on Earth. Obviously many other countries don't want that and will do anything they can to stir rebellion and dissent.
It isn't going to work.

The ostrich point is well taken. Did the plank hurt coming out?
As for the eight years, it really is that awful, but America's decline has been going on for far, far longer than that. May I point out that congress is in the majority Republican currently. Reducing middle class taxes would probably help the majority of Americans a bit. Lowering the taxes of the super rich just benefits them and if you lower taxes across the board you have less money for social projects, disaster relief and, yes, wall building. You do not have to be a Democrat to think Trump is wrong in much of his policies
Minority groups do try to influence government; so do any other groups. Minority groups have a minor effect because they are in the minority. That is how democracy works. For what it is worth I personally hope they do even better in the influencing of government, as they are often picked on, being in the minority. That bullying has been going on for more than 8 HUNDRED years, never mind just eight. It has probably gone on as long as there have been people.
I could not agree more about the swamp. But, Trump will keep filling it up with more slimy creeps.
50% of Americans did vote for Trump. But all Americans have a constitutional right to free speech. If they see through Trump, they have both a right and a moral duty to say so. Many, many brave souls died to enshrine that right. I could not disagree more with you on this point. I understand that you can't or won't see it, but Trump isseriously damaging the country. The Republican party has the majority in Congress, they do in all three houses. The reason they block Trump's policies is because the majority, involving BOTH SIDES, can see the damage the policies would do. Neither the Democrats nor the Republicans are losing face here............................... Guess who is. The violence is wrong, no argument there, but it is not one sided.
Wish for what you want, Congress is democratic (I do not mean Democrat driven, but majority ruled) they block only those policies the majority see as a retrograde step. These are mostly experienced politicians, not businessmen with no grasp of the subtelties. Everyone wants the medical system fixed and the economy boosted, the disagreements come from the understanding of how to do it. it is only too easy to make matters worse.
The far left almost certainly wants to tear America down. The moderate left and the centrists, even the moderate right should not be confused with them. That is either stupid or disingenuous.
Ranting is happening on both sides. Most Presidents have managed to appease it by this point in their presidency. Under Trump both sides are becoming louder and increasingly violent. I do not believe that to be a coincidence, but a symptom of the dysfunction of his government.
All the media is biased. INCLUDING FOX NEWS. None of it, even the FOX news stuff is an outright lie or fabrication, unlike some of Trump's tweeting, but just like their opposite numbers on the anti-Trump side they will cherry-pick what they report. Can you not see that the right-leaning watchers are being brainwashed too? I am getting very tired of repeating this but: "IF YOU ONLY LOOK AT ONE SIDE, YOU CAN ONLY SEE ONE SIDE."
A few other countries, like North Korea for example, want to see America fall. The vast majority want it to succeed, as it is a stabilizing force in the world. We worry that Trump is going to destroy it from within.

I just LOVE pointing this out
3 million more votes went to Hillary
Trump LOST the popular vote
he is still claiming he won by millions of votes
BUT
so far neither him nor anyone else has provided any proof of this
as I have mentioned before, the Republicans in my state fed us the same line they have been looking for illegally cast votes for 8 months now out of almost 5 MILLION votes cast in my state they have come up with about a dozen that MIGHT be illegal yeah a dozen out of almost 5 million
Trump HAS to negate the extra 3 million votes for Hillary ,that would put them equal he then has to come up with at least another 2 million votes to make his claim not FAKE NEWS (as we ALL know that it is)
so good luck finding those 5 million votes
and about this "This endless personal vendetta is futile. He is our president. We can
support him and ask congress to work with him to better our country or
the Democrats can lose all credibility, promote violence, ignorance, and
anarchy and pout -"
the Republicans tore into Obama for eight years straight and that was ok? but its not ok to go after Trump ??? hypocrisy much ???
Trump has proven himself to be a moral reprobate and a pathological liar why should I or anyone else support that ???

First of all, Med, about the video - it's just Hannity being Hannity. For those of us who don't subscribe to the GOP's propaganda department, AKA Fox News, his opinion carries no weight whatsoever. He's just an angry guy making a good living from being an angry guy, with a personal agenda and an outlet where he can vent. Being a news channel talking head doesn't change anything, the same way that capitalizing "Real News" doesn't necessarily make your viewpoint any more credible than others. It's all just opinions, and we're every one of us guilty of choosing the one we feel most comfortable with. Just human nature whichever side of the political spectrum you're on.
And for those who are indignant and outraged that the President isn't being respected and left to do his job, you're probably the same people that did the exact same thing during Obama's two terms. What's so hard to understand? It's the nature of the beast - each side gets to bitch while the other's guy is in the White House. Or Mar-a-Lago. Or wherever. We didn't vote for your guy because of his policies and stances, so why are we now supposed to embrace them unconditionally? You didn't for eight years, Med. In fact, you were technically the whiner for a good while there, before the political pendulum swung to the right again.
And for those who claim to want to make America great again - it always was. You just weren't paying attention. Much of the rest of the world thought so too - until about seven months ago, anyway. Trump insinuating that America would be better his way strikes me as an insult to one of the greatest nations on Earth, and doesn't seem particularly patriotic.
PS 46% voted for Trump. Almost half. But not quite...

Hurricane Irma soars to Category 3 in Atlantic, forecast to reach 'extremely dangerous' Cat 4 strength
http://www.usatoday.com/staff/782/doyle-rice/" rel="nofollow - Doyle Rice , USA TODAYPublished 10:51 a.m. ET Aug. 31, 2017 | Updated 4:52 p.m. ET Aug. 31, 2017
Irma Strengthens to a Hurricane

The forecasts of a busy Atlantic hurricane season are proving accurate.
As https://www.usatoday.com/topic/hurricane-harvey/local" rel="nofollow - Harvey weakened to a depression, a new hurricane, Irma, fired up in the central Atlantic Ocean, the National Hurricane Center said Thursday.
As of 5 p.m. ET, Irma was rated a Category 3 "major" hurricane with 115-mph winds, and is forecast to roar into an "extremely dangerous" hurricane over the next several days, with winds of 140 mph. (A "major" hurricane is one of Category 3 strength or above.)
Irma was located about 1,780 miles east of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean and was moving to the west-northwest at 12 mph.
It poses no immediate threat to land and its eventual track remains highly uncertain as is typical for storms this far out to sea.
Irma will take about a week to trek west across the Atlantic Ocean, AccuWeather said.
Possibilities range from a landfall on the Leeward Islands in the northeastern Caribbean to the Carolinas and the island nation of Bermuda - and everything in between, according to AccuWeather.
Meanwhile, closer to home, the hurricane center is also watching a separate area of disturbed weather in the western Gulf of Mexico, one that could spin up into a tropical depression or storm in the next five days.
"Development, if any, of this system is expected to be slow to occur as the low moves slowly northward," the hurricane center said. "If this system does develop, it could bring additional rainfall to portions of the Texas and Louisiana coasts."
And in the eastern Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Lidia took aim on Mexico's Baja Peninsula. As of 5 p.m. ET, Lidia had winds of 65 mph and was located about 20 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Tropical storm warnings were in effect for much of the Baja as well as the west coast of Mexico.
Lidia is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 8 to 12 inches across the Mexican states of Baja California Sur into Baja California and western Jalisco, with isolated maximum totals of 20 inches.
The rains could cause life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

I don't see a man with deep rooted spiritual values, Med. I see a man clearly uncomfortable, in a situation he rarely finds himself in, and surrounded by people who's level of faith he simply doesn't understand.

Looking around while everyone else prays is a dead giveaway - that's what we do. With Trump's notoriously short attention span, I'm surprised he held out as long as he did.
I do agree with the sentiment in that last line though - God help us.

To my absolute astonishment Trump has just donated a million dollars of his own personal fortune to the Texas relief program.
I don't know if this was a genuine gesture of kindness, or an amazingly desperate publicity stunt, (This is no widow's mite; he can afford it without raising a sweat). The poor people of Texas! What a disgusting abuse of power! I understand anyone who was taken in and voted for him originally; he does have a great stage presence and a ruthless determination to win at any cost. But if you are still a supporter, you should be ashamed. What a great pity impeachment can only be on such a narrow list of grounds.
I really, really envy you Americans for having a written constitution - ours is just implied. But, brilliant though it is, perhaps a little fine tuning (to ensure that the greatest power carries the greatest penalties for misuse) could improve things slightly.
All that aside, this is warming up to be a humdinger of a hurricane season. Apparently there are several more nasty candidates hanging around out there in the Atlantic, undecided where (or hopefully just if) they will make landfall. Forecasters are unwilling to make any guesses at the moment.
I think I know why thy are refraining from making any medium or long range predictions. Over here our weather forecasters have just described a situation I have never seen before, where the jet stream has split into two separate air currents. Although they are telling us that we are about to be hit by the tail end of one of the Atlantic storms, they have no idea how long they will hang around doing nasties over us, or how nasty it will be. However bad, we only get (up until now) a small taste of the storms and hurricanes that batter the east coast of The Americas. Still, I am not looking forward to the weather next week. I hate to think what Harvey's relatives will do to America next,
Here's hoping Trump pulls his finger out and sorts out the disaster response services. He could otherwise end up like Nero in the eyes of history: fiddling (the election, with Russian help Donnie's case) while Rome burns. I know he wants to always be the first, the premier, the winner, but winning the race to be Americas most infamous historical figure is surely not what he intends. I'm still not going to hold my breath; I need it to pray for the coastal dwellers over there.

The real news - considering all that has happened I think this shows a great deal of courage to personally work to hand out food and hugging and holding children of all races. This is all over CNN today and I was surprised.

What is so courageous about holding children of different races? Being different from yourself is not catching. Generally speaking, most children are neither armed nor dangerous.
If you can't see this as a publicity stunt then I feel sorry for you. Trump is the most powerful man in the world and yet he spends time on the front line. 5 minutes with a pen could solve ALL of Houston's problems (though it might delay a policy or two) and this just does a job someone else could do as well; without the security entourage, probably much better. To make such capital from so much misery when he could, instead, actually help is sickening!

More than 200 weather records were broken during the summer of 2016, with extreme bushfires, heatwaves and flooding.
Australia has warmed by around one degree Celsius since 1910, weather bureau and national science body CSIRO reported.
New South Wales’s Rural Fire Service is bringing forward its bushfire danger period to September, a month earlier because of the hotter and more arid conditions.
Research published in Nature Climate Change last week stated that hotter, drier conditions would increase in frequency even if global warming was kept to the Paris Climate Summit target of 1.5C.

A firefighting Hercules C-130 plane, dubbed ‘Thor’, has returned to Richmond airbase in Sydney from the United States, to prepare for the country's bushfire season. The aircraft is capable of dropping 15,000 litres of water or fire retardant.

Speaking of heat, it topped out at 108 where I'm working, and it's still 102 at seven o'clock at night. The sun went down already - really?

JD, are you in the San Francisco area? I've read about their heat wave!
The setting sun in the Chicago area is an erie red due to the atmospheric particulates from fires in Canada and Alaska.

NC Girl, I agree that socialism does not work. The far left never does. Neither does the far right. The left lets its heart rule its head and the right lets its head rule its heart. The left bankrupts the country and the right bankrupts the little guy. The muddled, moderate, mediocre middle is the path of least damage.
Trump is no centrist. I would place him somewhat right of Genghis Khan. He is manipulative, bullying, and dishonest. He demonstrates many of the character traits associated with the psychopath. (The definition is not black and white but comes in a sliding scale. Many CEOs classify as one on points average. It makes them winners; it does not make them nice people.) His publicity, or propaganda, is reminiscent of Goebbels' propaganda both before and during the formation of the Third Reich. His media manipulation reminds me of Nixon (not the stuff they tried to impeach Nixon for, but his election winning media hype). He has an ego so fragile he reacts with all the diplomacy of a charging bull if anyone crosses him. Both his apparent racism and his obvious racial intolerance are disgusting and his lack of self control, considering the power of his position, is frankly terrifying.
I live in a country which tries to occupy the center ground politically. It is a tightrope and we tend to fall over one side or the other, but we spring back to the middle. We are Smaller than one of America's states and yet we are one of the G8 (and the 5 eyes). The American middle class is richer than the British one, but appears to live in perpetual fear of losing everything. We live longer than you do on average and our medicine is free at the point of need for everyone.
When I was young and adventurous I contemplated living in several other Countries. America was on my research list. I ended up staying here as our way of life was preferable. Now I am older, weaker and have a disabled son, I am profoundly glad I stayed. I believe in the right to bear arms, but am very happy I did not chose to pay the price of living there to get it. I understand and share the American love of freedom and know that rampant socialism removes it from the people. It may surprise you to learn that rampant right wing politics does too, it just does it by reducing people to poverty instead of legislating their rights away. Poverty is more restrictive of freedom than prison or a gulag. Both are effectively nasty for the people. If you are one of the super-rich then right wing politics probably does work for you. If your conscience can take milking so much from those who are poorer, a typical CEO approach. But, there are precious few super-rich and many, many much poorer. Taking a strongly right wing approach stems from either a lack of care for your fellow man, or a failure to understand the consequences of one's actions. 'And Trump is lying about those consequences.
I can't comment on Canada. I have never been there and the one Canadian I used to talk to (Germ Nerd) has disappeared off of the radar.

San Diego, Chuck. East County specifically. It does get pretty hot out there, but this heatwave is particularly brutal and expected to last a while. It's pretty windy too, which is making the risk of wildfires that much greater. NorCal is getting it pretty bad too. When we drove to Oregon for the solar eclipse, it was hovering around the high 90s as we got to the northern end of the Central Valley, and the forecast was for even warmer weather.

Thanks, I've been watching it closely!!
I could easily see Irma snaking around past or over Florida into the Gulf of Mexico....and back into Houston!! That is usually how Gulf hurricanes evolve (Harvey did that as well).
If Houston were to get nailed again, the effect would be as if the place were hit with a nuclear weapon - widespread and permanent destruction of infrastructure. People would probably be smart enough to evacuate, but you never know.
Keep an eye on it!
