The Trump administration on Tuesday denied a request from several
members of Congress to waive shipping restrictions to help get gasoline
and other supplies to Puerto Rico as the island recovers from Hurricane
Maria.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) declined the request to
waive the Jones Act, which limits shipping between coasts to
U.S.-flagged vessels, according to https://www.reuters.com/article/us-storm-maria-puertorico-shipping/u-s-denies-request-for-puerto-rico-shipping-waiver-idUSKCN1C12UI" rel="nofollow - Reuters . DHS waived the act following hurricanes Harvey and Irma, which hit the mainland U.S.
The agency has in the past waived the rule to allow cheaper and more
readily-available foreign vessels to supply goods to devastated areas.
But DHS said Tuesday that waiving the act for Puerto Rico would not help
the U.S. island territory due to damaged ports preventing ships from
docking.

DJ; Both Katrina and Maria were expected a few days before they hit New Orleans c.q. Puerto Rico. In both cases you could claim (local) governments failed.
-long term, not enough measures were taken to protect citizens for damage
-short term, after the disaster New Orleans citizens did not get enough aid, were prevented from moving to nearby safe locations. After "Maria" the federal government did not react fast enough-wich may have cost some lives.
But of course when you compare Katrina with over 1800 people killed, Maria https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Maria#Puerto_Rico_2" rel="nofollow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Maria#Puerto_Rico_2 did limited damage.

Puerto Ricans feel like 'second-class citizens'
Mr Trump's comments drew swift condemnation on the mainland.
"The tweets this morning are despicable, are deplorable, are not statesman-like at all," said New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, a Democrat who was born in Puerto Rico.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-09-29/hurricane-maria-midnight-journey-military-aircraft-puerto-rico/9000126" rel="nofollow - Midnight flight to Puerto Rico

"He needs to be in charge, he needs to take control, he needs to demonstrate some level of empathy over what is happening," Ms Mark-Viverito told CNN.
His acting homeland security secretary Elaine Duke had earlier surveyed the Puerto Rican landscape by helicopter, and also drove past still-flooded streets, twisted billboards and roofs with gaping holes.
Meanwhile water and food rations are improving, and telecommunications have been restored to about 30 per cent of the island.
Nearly half of the supermarkets have reopened, at least for reduced hours, and about 60 per cent of the petrol stations are pumping.
But Puerto Ricans say they feel neglected by the mainland US.
A Morning Consult-New York Times poll shows that more than half of Americans do not realise that Puerto Rico is a US territory and that its residents are US citizens.
Xavier Totti, who moved to the mainland US from Puerto Rico says he is still asked routinely if he is "legal", and when he mails packages to relatives back home he has to fill out an international form.
"By now, it's sort of comical, but it makes me feel second-class, like you don't belong," he said.

Donald Trump is struggling to be the president he promised
Jenna Johnson
119 reading now
On the campaign trail, Donald Trump pitched himself as a deal maker who would look out for the country's "forgotten people," "drain the swamp," unite the country, "immediately repeal and replace Obamacare," surround himself with "only with the best and most serious people" and, of course, "win so much."
But this past week made clear that President Trump is falling far short of fulfilling those promises.

Disease outbreaks begin in Puerto Rico even as Trump attacks its citizens on Twitter
https://www.rawstory.com/author/daveb/" rel="nofollow - DAVID FERGUSON https://www.rawstory.com/2017/09/30/" rel="nofollow - 30 SEP 2017 AT 19:59 ET
The first outbreaks of contagious disease are beginning on the island of Puerto Rico 10 days after Hurricane Maria strafed the U.S. territory with a direct hit, according to The Daily Beast, even as the federal response lags and President Donald Trump https://www.rawstory.com/2017/09/shttiest-president-ever-trump-gets-pounded-on-twitter-for-continued-puerto-rico-attacks/" rel="nofollow - attacks Puerto Rico and its elected officials on Twitter.
The Daily Beast’s Pablo Venes spoke to Puerto Rican mayors and health officials about the ticking infectious disease time bomb waiting to explode into a full-on public health crisis as citizens enter their second week without electricity, air conditioning, water, food or medication.
“Ninety-five percent of the island is still without electricity more than a week after Hurricane Maria struck, https://www.thedailybeast.com/puerto-ricos-hospitals-running-out-of-everything-and-patients-running-out-of-time" rel="nofollow - including most hospitals . Only about half of the island’s 3.4 million population has drinking water. These two factors, plus unsanitary flood water inundating homes and towns, have created a public-health emergency,” wrote Venes.
Mayor Julia Navarro of Loiza, a city half an hour’s drive from San Juan, said residents are showing signs of Dengue fever, Zika virus and a runaway epidemic of conjunctivitis that has infected more than 300 people.
“I’m here because there are still murky waters clogged on my streets and residents have been showing symptoms of Zika, Dengue and conjunctivitis virus,” she said. “If I didn’t come here personally, I wouldn’t get any help.”
Victor Ramos — president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Puerto Rico — told the Daily Beast that the health crisis is just beginning.
“We still see communities were flood water is on their driveways and common playground areas,” he said, noting the flood water is a combination of rainwater and raw sewage. “This has to stop. The second someone comes in contact with flood water, their lives and are in danger.”
The lack of running water means that opportunities for proper hygiene have largely disappeared, Ramos said, leaving the population vulnerable to cholera, hepatitis A, meningitis, and salmonella.
“Without water supply, residents rely on stocking water to wash their mouth and do the dishes. This water is often stored incorrectly and this gets infected rapidly,” he explained.
Outside the cities, where information is scarce due to the collapsed communications network, Ramos said the problems will be the most intense — in the areas that are the most difficult to access.
Puerto Rico’s network of hospitals are struggling to keep up with patient demands, but with no water, dwindling food supplies and a scarcity of diesel for generators, most are barely hanging on.
The island nation of Haiti was decimated in a 2010 earthquake, but the https://www.rawstory.com/2014/05/after-8000-cholera-deaths-haiti-faces-new-epidemic/" rel="nofollow - deaths from cholera in the months that followed outnumbered the lives lost in the quake itself. Four years later, Haiti struggled with an outbreak of chikungunya, a mosquito-borne virus that attacks the brain, joints and connective tissues.
Hospital ship the U.S.N.S. Comfort left port at the end of this week — 8 days after the hurricane — to begin its trip to the beleaguered island. It is expected to arrive next week, but as Venes noted, “For some, it will be too late.”Source: https://www.rawstory.com/2017/09/disease-outbreaks-begin-in-puerto-rico-even-as-trump-attacks-its-citizens-on-twitter/" rel="nofollow - https://www.rawstory.com/2017/09/disease-outbreaks-begin-in-puerto-rico-even-as-trump-attacks-its-citizens-on-twitter/

Latest reports are that the hospital morgues across Puerto Rico are already at capacity, and the US Army says the number of people without clean drinking water has increased from 44% to 55% in four days. Things are deteriorating rapidly despite the administration's assurances to the contrary. This is what happens when you put a businessman in charge who never gives away anything without the expectation of compensation. At least politicians know the value of public service, even if it's only for the good press it provides.
This is not business - this is the right thing to do, and people will lose their lives before Trump understands. If he ever actually does.

In some areas it is not as bad as they are saying. My college aged daughter plays college sports and has several friends that were on the college baseball team that have graduated and returned to Puerto Rico. She has been texting back and forth with them, as she does everyday. They were only without electricity in their area for a day or 2 and they are doing fine. So in some areas it's ok.

Apparently contaminated water is believed to be to blame. So, that is unlikely to get any better quickly. Also, rumor has it, that Trump is talking about reducing FEMA's involvement in the disaster struck area.

No Let Up For Puerto Rico.
The island communities devastated by hurricane and the indifference of the sociopathic President is now suffering the tripple whammy of disease. And Trump said they were 'whining'.
What is leptospirosis, the deadly disease spreading in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico?
https://www.accuweather.com/en/emma-curtis" rel="nofollow - By October 23, 2017, 11:32:52 AM EDTA total of 74 Puerto Ricans are suspected to be suffering from leptospirosis since Hurricane Maria wreaked havoc across the island last month, and four deaths are being investigated as possible cases of the disease, according to the http://www.nydailynews.com/newswires/news/world/hurricane-maria-death-toll-rises-49-puerto-rico-article-1.3576867" rel="nofollow - Associated Press .
Although dozens of people are may be suffering from the bacterial disease, officials have denied to call it an epidemic or a confirmed outbreak.
The disease is the result of contact with water that has been contaminated by animal urine. Puerto Rico averages 60 reported cases of leptospirosis each year. The 74 suspected cases have transpired since Hurricane Maria hit the island.
More than a third of the island remains without running water; some of those affected by leptospirosis fell ill after drinking local stream water.
According to the CDC, symptoms of leptospirosis are wide and varied but can include high fever, jaundice, red eyes and body pain. The CDC also states that some infected people may have no symptoms at all, a worrisome thought for those in Puerto Rico that have resorted to drinking contaminated water.
The time between a person’s exposure to contaminated water and becoming sick can range from two days to four weeks, leaving plenty of time for more cases to be reported over the next month or more.
The CDC states that leptospirosis can last for a few days or several months depending on treatment, yet people in Puerto Rico are dying from the infection.
"While most patients have mild or self-limiting infection, some patients will develop severe infection and present with bleeding or hemorrhage, kidney failure, meningitis and hepatitis," said Dr. M. Rizwan Sohail, a professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the Mayo Clinic. "The death rate in patients who develop severe infection is between 5 and 15 percent."

My personal theory is that Trump is allowing Puerto Rico to become uninhabitable in order to induce mass migration of the native population (primarily non-white, Spanish speaking), leaving the island for takeover by his Wall Street buddies.
This is an old real estate trick, I've seen it many times in Chicago.

Trumps war on Puerto Rico is certainly going well
http://www.desdemonadespair.net/2017/11/60-minutes-puerto-rico-still-mostly.html" rel="nofollow - 60
Minutes: Puerto Rico still mostly without electricity – “There is no
food. There is no water. There is no gasoline. There is no power. There
is no running water … no banks … ATMs. There’s nothing.”
and DerTrumperFuror gave himself a solid "10" rating "best recovery effort everrrrrrrr........"
if PR is a 10,I $%^#$#@ don't ever want to see a 2 or a 3
at this point the Trump administrations incompetence is essentially criminal in nature
