It would seem the geographical area and race have a lot to do with horror in the loss of human life. The following has not been ever really covered in the mainstream media and is a grim reminder in terms of human suffering.

years of the Iraq War estimated between 150,000 and one million Iraqis

A later study, published in 2011, estimated that approximately 460,000
people had died as a result of the conflict since the invasion including

Politicians do not get up and talk about this. Movie stars don't send sad tweets and try and figure out a way to stop the carnage or end the social unrest in countries as millions of refugees wander homeless from war torn countries.
You will never see this on the mainstream media. People in the U.S. for the most part don't care. They eat (a lot) watch their cable and mostly cannot picture a power outage like just happened in Puerto Rico.
Such things just don't happen in America - yet.
There will be a price for such arrogance and indifference to the suffering in other countries and cultures.
And there could come a time when the loss of less than 50 people will be considered a bad day in the neighborhood.
Let's hope not.
