| Happy Hew Year everyone! It's time to get things right, a new start! I have ordered a food dehydrator, been wanting one for a long time, it's supposed to arrive Thursday. I am looking forward to making jerky. I also ordered the book "The End Of the World As We Know It" In December, so I have started reading that. I had been wanting to order it, but didn't want to pay full price. Found it for $4.99 at a discount online booksellers. I also need to start restocking my pantry with canned goods, been using up what I have and the pantry is looking too low for my liking. |

| The dehydrator arrived! So far we have made two batches of beef jerky and it has been really good. We are dehydrating fruit now, apples, oranges and pears. We are just in the experimentation process right now to see how everything works. |

| I got the Nesco Professional 600W food dehydrator FD-75PR. It has 5 trays but is expandable to 12 trays if you want to buy extra trays. The fruit came out really good, but it is really sweet tastes almost like candy. I like fresh fruit better, but it is still good. It would go good in a trail mix with some nuts or something. |

I think we might have the same dehydrator. I've only been using it for beef, b ut I want to try salmon soon too. Like sashimi grade salmon. I read that fruits take several hours to dry compared to meat, especially cherries and grapes. ------------- Be prepared! It may be time....^_^v |

| Yes, the fruit took about twice as long to dehydrate as the meat did. We did our third batch of jerky and it was finished yesterday morning and it's already gone. That would be the problem, lol, it gets eaten as fast as we make it. |

| We bought seeds yesterday. We will be doing a garden this year, we got broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, jalapeno, lavender, sage then also got some wild flower seeds for around the pool. Received a Burgess catalog last week and I am definitely ordering one of the dwarf citrus trees this year. |

This fall, I gathered a few pails of acorns from a local oak grove to feed our burgeoning squirrel population. I seemed to recall that acorns were edible, so I did the research. The only thing I'm doing is carrying alcohol hand-wipes to wipe off handles at stores. No plans to SIP, unless the North Koreans get feisty. ------------- CRS, DrPH |

| Over he past few weeks I have been stocking up on cough and cold OTC meds and I am glad I did. I was in the store yesterday and due to the high rates of flu around here the medication shelves are empty. As of today 8 school districts are closing because of the flu. |

We have had a lot of adults out with strep, viruses, some possible flu but the kids seem to be better than last year. Not sure why but I am not hearing all the coughing and hacking like last year. I use Lysol spray and Clorox wipe everything I touch and wash my hands 6 - 10 times a day. I use Gold Bond sanitizing hand cream. I am using a thin swipe of Triple Antibiotic ointment in my nose and taking Zink lozenges once a day and Sambucol lozenges twice a day. Hey, I am trying not to get sick! Chuck, here in NZ we have dispensers of alcohol wipes right by the trolleys so you can help yourself and wipe down the handle if you want to. Penham, what flu meds are you buying? It's been so long since I bought any that I'm not sure what to get. I do buy an iodine gargle that's great for any kind of sore throat. I wonder, if like the 1918 Spanish flu, the pandemic flu that gets everyone will show up moderately in one year, only to return in the next to kill significant numbers. ------------- Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts. |

| I got a generic cold and flu liquid supposed to be the same ingredients as Theraflu, but for half the price. I got the daytime and the night time ones. Lots of Ibuprofen, Mucinex and Benedryl for sinus problems and saline nasal spray. |

This may not seem like prepping but I went through all the paper work in my late husband's office (now my office). I burned all the stuff I did not need and put the rest of the stuff in files and put the files where they need to be. I feel great but it took me 2 days to do, it was a lot of stuff. Now I am going to start on the basement slowly but get it done over time. It took a long time to get to this because I see his handwriting, memories, photos, just a lot of emotional items. |

FluMom... I consider "clearing the decks" to be part of prepping. I tend to collect too much stuff so clearing out is a hard part of prepping for me  . Emotional attachment can be hard, so go easy with yourself if you can't clear out too much on the first try. |

It has been 9 years EdwinSm but it was still hard but better than 5 years ago. I still have not put back the photos into the photo books that we used for the funeral. I will never get over my dear husbands death it still seems like yesterday. But at least I got through his office. I think clearing the decks is good for prepping but also good to lighten your life. Thanks for the nice words. |

I know from studying deer that the white oak acorn contains fewer tannin's than the red oak so they shouldn't have to be soaked as long! It's too late this year but I'm going to try some of these recipes next year! I wish i'd had this info earlier because this was a mast year, and the acorns were so thick on the ground it was like trying to walk on marbles! ------------- Buy more ammo! |
