So it's the new year! What is everyone preparing for? The government shutdown has been an interesting turn of events with a lot of people having no income right now. I read a news article today that said if the shutdown goes into February food stamps will not be available for anyone. It's good to be prepared for anything right now! What are everyone's thoughts?

Major power cut yesterday.

Could cook (and heat) on wood burning stove, so just another practice run, without too much difficulty. The power was out when we woke up, and now we have routine down to light the stove, boil water and cook breakfast taking only 5 minutes more than when having electricity. What took time (before the power came back) was feeding the stove constantly to keep some fire going for heating.

Possibly need to stock up on different types of candles (although we have 'enough' with all the candles for Christmas). Also I probably need to get a new battery for my laptop (totally shot = computer crashes the instant the power is cut)

A couple of weeks ago we had a power outage for 5 hours at night, we had plenty of candles and flashlights. Our house was the only house on the block (or anywhere around) with lights outside because we have solar security lights around the outside of the house and a string of solar lights around the front garden. Fortunately it was only 50 degrees outside so we did not have to run our gas wall heaters. If it was this week, we had an ice/snow storm it would have been a different story.

I'm checking all my emergency equipment! We had a tornado warning a month or so ago and the power was out and my crank weather radio didn't work. I'm also replacing batteries! Some of mine were dead and dated "use by 2014"! Small emergencies make for better preps!

Things are not looking good with the government shutdown continuing. We are having a meeting at work today to find out what our agency will be doing. We are not a government agency but a lot of our funding comes from government grants. Which we have been getting emails that those agencies will not be open after the 18th as there is no funding for them.
