This may have been mentioned. Looking at the Sambucol thread, one thing to concider is, Sambucol contains echinacea which does boost the immune response and maybe the Cytokine response to it.
As far as elderberries go, you can make your own "homemade" sambucol without the echinacea which has been proven to work on the flu, and studies lately have shown elderberries might be effective against the bird flu.
And if taken when bird flu enters your area, and before you contract it, it should not ever get to the point of a Cytokine Storm as it will keep the viral load to a minumiun.
This is much cheaper than buying sambucol, and does the same thing, so you can afford to have more onhand.
Simply take a qt. jar and fill 1/3 full of "dried" elderberries. Fill the jar with 80-90 proof vodka (cheap vodka). Let set for two weeks, shaking every couple of day.  Take two tablespoons a day for  preventative care, and two tablespoons four times a day after you contract the flu, bird or otherwise. You will need a qt to make it thru the wave of flu, or more if you start taking it early. And since it will come in three waves, three qts will be needed.
This stuff smells bad, and tastes worse, so take it in juice or soda to make it more user friendly.
Herbs can be found at Herbal.com. 1 lb is $5.30 last time I looked, and will make three qts. This is not "snake oil" and does work for the flu, and I see no reason why it will not work for bird flu.
Hope this helps someone.

Thank you Mountainwinds for bringing this back up!!!

This is exactly what I did.  I bought 20 lbs of the dried elderberry and "brewed" up 10 lbs and have vacuum sealed the other 10 lbs in abeyance.  Plus I have enough cheap vodka to float a small ship... and I don't even drink.

I cut mine with 50% raw honey... that's expensive but I chose it for honey's health properties as well.  We will use it prophylacticly, hence the huge quantity.

Mountain,  PLEASE post the info.  If you are talking about non-alcohol extraction, it would also apply to pregnant women and people who must avoid alcohol.  It would be a great service and I thank you in advance.

(I have heard of a glycerin method but don't know the spec's)

How interesting! I just went into our Materia Medica. We do have Samb as a homeopathic rem. And suprise, suprise..... one of the key notes is CHILD AWAKES SUDDENLY, NEARLY SUFFOCATIN, SITS UP, TURNS BLUE. CANNOT EXPIRE. MILLER"S ASTHMA.

This is interesting in the blue color. The hands turn blue. And they turn blue with cough.

Again the natural signature written in the herb comes out beautifully in the remedy.

And if I recall reading about the 1918 flu, there was a dark blue cast to people when they were close to death. Although the elderberry blue cast may not be as dusky as the 1918 flu was.

To make this for children. Using an electric stove, bring  the elderberry tincture to a slow, slow, slow simmer. Just enough to make a bubble or two. To much heat will destroy the medicinal value.
Stir well until the tincture turns to a thin syrup. By this time, all alcohol should be gone from it.
This will have to be refridgerated as it will not keep very well since the alcohol has been removed.
You may add this to juice, or add some sugar, as kids may not like the taste. But, do not add honey for small kids, as honey is bad for them.
There is another method, but I better make sure I've got it right before posting.
Elderberries, do not prevent the flu, but stops the virus from replicating, thus allowing your immune system to fight it, without going into overload and causing the cytokine storm.
Hope this helps someone.

I have also read in a couple of places, where you can take a cup of hot water, add a dose of the ticnture and let it steep for five minutes, This should let most of the alcohol evaporate.

Another method, is to make a double boiler. Add equal amounts of tincture and vegetable gylcerine.  Using very low heat, cook it down to where you have half of the liquid you started with.
This is a gylcerine tincture having not much more than 5% alcohol.
This will be somewhat sweet, and will be close to that of an extract.

Sambucol does make plain elderberry syrup, as well as the one with the echineacea - I have both.  The plain syrup is in storage, the other with echineacea is to use now when family members get symptoms of the flu going round - thank goodness the flu season is waning.

I found a place that sells elderberry flowers - is there any medicinal value to that?  Or just to have as a tea?  Am looking for a source of the plant itself.  I know elderberries are naturally found here in the US, but I think their different in medicinal value compared to the ones found in Europe.  Still it would be nice to have a plant or two of the European variety to add to the outdoor medicine garden anyway.

Herbalists have found the the most potent part is the berries. Sambus Nigra is the elderberry to use.
Some of the other elderberries are poison.
There is a place that sells the plants, but I don't remember the name now. Will try to find it.

FYI:  Please read extensively about elderberries and BF ( studies and research) before you make decisions.  IMO> look into oregano oil, and lauric acid ( found in coconuts) to reduce viral loads without these  stimulating strong immune system response.

There is evidence that black elderberry extract (trade name: Sambucol) can reduce the risk of contracting ordinary influenza strains, or shorten the course of disease in those who contract the typical flu.

It does so by
increasing the production of inflammatory cytokines like IL-1, IL-6, and http://www.med-owl.com/herbal-antivirals/tiki-index.php?page=TNF/oTumor Necrosis Factor - TNF . http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12455180&query_hl=9/t_blank - PMID:12455180 http://www.med-owl.com/herbal-antivirals/tiki-view_cache.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Fentrez%2Fquery.fcgi%3Fcmd%3DRetrieve%26amp%3Bdb%3Dpubmed%26amp%3Bdopt%3DAbstract%26amp%3Blist_uids%3D12455180%26amp%3Bquery_hl%3D9/t_blank - (cache) . http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=11399518&query_hl=9/t_blank - PMID:11399518 http://www.med-owl.com/herbal-antivirals/tiki-view_cache.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Fentrez%2Fquery.fcgi%3Fcmd%3DRetrieve%26amp%3Bdb%3Dpubmed%26amp%3Bdopt%3DAbstract%26amp%3Blist_uids%3D11399518%26amp%3Bquery_hl%3D9/t_blank - (cache) .

While black elderberry extract be appropriate for ordinary Type A influenza,
it could make avian flu more lethal. Ordinary strains of flu do not trigger massive production of TNF, and ordinary flu viruses are generally susceptible to the action of TNF. Avian flu, by contrast, does trigger massive production of TNF (as much as a 45x increase), while the virus is relatively resistant to the anti-viral effects of TNF. If TNF is a significant cause of the illness and mortality in avian flu, anything that increases TNF would be undesirable.

It has been pointed out that black elderberry does not just increase TNF and other cytokines. It also may reduce the spread of the virus through inactivation, or exert anti-inflammatory effects as well as contributing to the cytokine storm. It may be that combining elberberry with other anti-inflammatories may allow it to check the infection without producing tissue destroying levels of cytokines. But there is insufficient evidence to make a solid conclusion, while there are
significant red flags that should be raised about the mode of action of elderberry.

Each person must make up his/her mind about using elderberries.  The tested facts are:

1) Elderberries have been double blind tested and shorten as well as reduce the flu and its symptoms...on both A and B

2) Elderberries reduce the viral load by removing the "spines" on the virus

3) Elderberries increase the action of the bodies immune system (no figures on how much)

4) There are no known medical complications when used with other meds with the exclusion of possible allergy

The above can be researched on the web and there are a number of medical abstracts written on it.  Also the Harvard School has some info on their alternative Med site.  I would suggest people do some reading on it.

The papers written on SARS indicate that those who survived ARDS had a lower viral load.  There also seem to be the same implications in H5N1 deaths and survivals.

Will elderberries remove enough of the viral load to save the victim?  Will elderberries increase the effectiveness of the immune system enough to increase a cytokine storm?  No one knows as these have not been tested.  Sambucol has been tested on H5N1 in vitro and destroyed 99% of the virus (British research by Dr. John Oxford in a university lab)

Each of us must make our own decision on this but read the available studies that can be found online.  They are done by scientists and not by someone selling alternative medicine products.  The question of taking it for infection of H5N1 is an individual decision but please make it based on the available science.

I have 9 qts made up, and I am going to start taking mine when it hits close to my state. If I take it before I get the flu, it should keep the viral load to a minimum from the start, and there should not be any problems from a cytokine storm.

Date Posted: April 16 2006 at 11:02am
Mountainwinds, like you, my decision is to take it when it gets to the US.  I am hoping the lessening of the viral load will help to survive it.  I wish there was some testing on H5N1 and humans but i can certainly see why there is not lol.  In hopes of dampening the cytokine storm i have selected an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties.   Because there are really no meds to take on this beast, we must try to do what we can with what we have.  I hope we have made the correct decision.

Calendula,

I bought some oregano oil after learning about cytokine storms and ARDS. It seemed a prudent thing to do. Now I'm a bit confused about which to take and when.

I have a background in human physiology, but after growing up with a bunch of docs who would have thought that anything herbal is voodoo, it is hard to come to grips the use of either oregano or elderberry.

It would be great if some herb follks here could outline a protocol for the use of these compounds, and under what circumstances each would be used. "Conventional" medicine types, like me, could use the guidance, I suspect.

Redcloud, these are foods, and can be taken whenever you want, and as much as you want.

In the 1980s, virologist Madeline Mumcuoglu, Ph.D., set out to determine by what mechanism elderberry successfully defeats the flu. She found that the action of elderberry extract was to prevent viral hemagglutinin, or the process of the invading cells using their spike-like projections to introduce its enzyme into healthy cell membranes. She further noted that the viral enzyme is also neutralized in the presence of elderberry extract.

MW,

Thanks. Because of my background I tend to look at anything medicinal as, well, medicine, with all its attendant warnings and caveats.

An because I've been unable to obtain much Tamiflu, even given all the docs in my family, I've been casting about for other interventions.

RedCloud:  I can only educate based on my knowledge and research.  The reason I have chosen oregano oil and lauric acid in trying to help myself and my family in case infection with BF is due to their antiviral properties.  Oregano has one of the most anti-viral properties known in any herb.  Lauric acid ( coconuts flesh) has shown in research to reduce viral loads in HIV patients.  Why these 2?  IMHO- sambucol and elderberries have shown to be effective against Influenza type A & B, and although BF is an influenza type A virus it differs a lot from it.  Why I did this?> From what I know what BF virus, it is a lipid coated virus, in research lauric acid has shown to penetrate the layer of lipid coated viruses, therefore reducing viral loads. I am also using eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, I use eucalyptus in a handkerchief and sort of sniff the esential oils, it helps deter particles entering your mucous membranes,(nostrils) especially around crwoded areas,  I clean my  household areas with tea tree oil, powerful antiseptic and antifungal.  Supplements are an individual choice, based on knowledge and information, these are my 2 cents worth!Thumbs Up

I purchased 2 jars of lauricidin as part of my preps. I've been experiencing flu-like symptoms and pneumonia since getting my flu shot in late Oct so I started taking a single dose of the lauricidin per day a week or so ago. It does seem to be helping me.

Either it's helping or whatever viral crud I contracted is finally winding down.

I'm definately saving the other jar for the preps though. I have several containers of coconut oil that I'll use first on my garden variety virus.

We did manage to get 2 rounds of Tamiflu per person but it sounds like they keep upping the necessary dosage so I'm glad there are some alternative treatments available.

Sambucol/elderberry extract is undoubtedly effective at combating the flu and bird flu should be no exception. However, due to how it increases cytokine storm it would be extremely foolish to take it more than two days into a bird flu infection. As a preventative measure, yes. When you're first feeling sick for 1-2 days, OK. When you have a high fever and/or trouble breathing -- NO!

oil of oregano shows great promise as anti-viral agent including against bird flu:

http://www.freemarketnews.com/Feedback.asp?nid=1300 - http://www.freemarketnews.com/Feedback.asp?nid=1300

I think mandatory vaccinations against bird flu would be a possibility,
but in U.S. only if pandemic gets really out of hand. Most likely, people vaccinated
against their will could be those where contagious bird flu breaks out (assuming it's detected right away, of course). WHO and CDC plan to
use same surround and isolate model deployed during Eradication of
smallpox. They sometimes had to use force then, too -- some people
in both India and Africa worshipped smallpox as a god/goddess and
believed that to get vaccinated would be call down the wrath of god
and give them smallpox instead of preventing it.

Hello, does anyone have the recipe to make Homemade Sambucol that also has tried it?

Posted By: redcloud
Date Posted: May 05 2006 at 5:43pm
According to SophiaZoe:

"I did 1/3 dried elderberries to 2/3 vodka (clear at least 80 proof). Soak a week, in a dark, cool place, shaking twice a day. After a week, I whisked them with my hand blender and let them soak two more weeks. Dark, cool place, shaken twice a day.

At the end of three weeks I strained them into sterile canning jars and tucked them away.

BTW: I only did 10 lbs, the other 10 I am holding in abeyance."

crystal,

I think they still put drops of a silver solution into the eyes of newborns and silver is used in many water purification systems.

I make my own and have for years. I believe it's wonderful, but not a pancea like some claim.

We plan to have plenty of colloidal silver solution on hand and oil of oregano along with some prescription meds and chinese herbal formulas.

I'm prone to sinus problems and adding a little colloidal silver to my neti pot has worked wonders, time and again. I add a little to the dogs water dish each day and there is never a film in the bowl.

Interestingly, Sambucus nigra, as it is called in homeopathy, is an influenza, cough, croup and whooping cough remedy--when the symptom picture fits.  That is, difficulty breathing, suffocating feeling, face turns blue, marked perspiration.  Worse at midnight to 3 a.m.  Chill in hands and feet and warm body.  Emotionally, someone would be very fretful, and frightful following the suffocative attacks.

Some of you are still experiencing residual effects from the flu shot.  Not suprised.  Homeopaths hear this all the time.  Doctors don't because their patients don't tell them because they wouldn't believe them anyway.

I strongly suggest that if you are still having effects from the flu shot that you seek out a classical homeopath to get you back on track.  We have lots of remedies that have a history of pulling people out of problems with vaccines--at least 50 of them.

There is never going to be enough vaccine to make everyone get the vaccine, so I wouldn't worry about it.  This is one of their big concerns--even if they could produce a vaccine, they can't make enough.

That is why homeopathy is such a natural solution.  Easy to make, produce and can be increased in quantity by the practitioner on the spot.

Problem is, you can't patent something that is so easily reproduced, thus there is no interest in it by the government.  A kit that could cure thousands of people who get the flu is less than $100.00 to purchase.

Garlic (allicin) - Very effective antiviral. Best if fresh (raw) and crushed. Must be consumed within 1 hour of crushing. Dosage is initially 2 to 3 cloves per day but later reduce until no body odour occurs. No toxic effects noted. (Pubmed PMID 9049657).

Vitamin C - Boosts the immune system and is an antiviral by blocking the enzyme neuraminadase. Viruses need neuraminadase to reproduce. There are anecdotal stories of people taking large amounts of Vitamin C (children ˝) surviving the Spanish Flu. Research shows that it may reduce the production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. A study on 470 people involved giving the test group 1000 mg hourly for 6 hours and then 1000 mg 3 times daily after reporting flu symptoms. Symptoms decreased by 85%. (Pubmed PMID 10543583, 634178, 16169205, 12876306)

Green Tea (possible Tamiflu/Relenza alternative)- Very effective antiviral. Also decreases the production of the cytokine (catechins) TNF-a. Inhibits neuraminidase. May have antiviral activity that is equal to other antivirals such as Tamiflu ( Pubmed PMID 16137775 )

St Johns Wort (Hypericum) - Very effective antiviral. Also decreases the production of the cytokine IL-6. Hypericum is an extract from St John’s Wort. There have been some very successful field trials in commercial flocks infected with H5N1 in Vietnam. (Pubmed PMID 7857513, 11518071, 11362353, 7857513)

Vitamin E - Immune booster. Also decreases the production of the cytokine TNF-a. (Pubmed PMID 10929076) Experiments involved using mice. Very suitable for immune compromised people, especially the elderly. Effects enhanced when taken with Vitamin C.

Apple Juice - Antiviral. Fresh apple juice including the pulp and skin has greater antiviral activity than heated commercial apple juice. More research is needed. Effectiveness on H5N1 is unknown (Pubmed PMID 32832, 12452634)

Resveratrol - Antiviral. In addition to inhibiting neuraminidase, Resveratrol also sends a message to cells to stop manufacturing viruses. This is a proven antiviral found naturally in red wine, peanuts, mulberries, Japanese Knotwood root (richest source), raisins and red grapes.
Resveratrol supplements are relatively inexpensive, are more stable than wine and is available in liquid form for absorption in the mouth. No toxic effects noted. (Pubmed PMID 1583880, 12817628, 15985724)

Scuttellaria (Skullcap)- Antiviral. A herb used as a tea. It has no side effects and is also a mild tranquilliser. Research suggests neuraminidase, which is a substance needed by the H5N1 Bird Flu virus to reproduce, may be inhibited.

Cranberry Juice - Early research shows that it may be an antiviral, making viruses less able to invade or multiply. Effectiveness on H5N1 is unknown (Pubmed PMID 15781126)

Cats Claw (Uncaria tomentosa)- Decreases the production of the cytokine TNF-a. Also boosts immune system. The number of white blood cells was significantly increased during treatment. No toxicity was noted. ( http://www.uspharmacist.com - www.uspharmacist.com id 844)
(Pubmed 10962207) Active constituents can be found in the leaves, bark, vine, and roots. Water extraction from bark used.
Children and pregnant women are to avoid. Has a potentially damaging effect on the DNA of proliferating cells (cancers, foetuses, growing children)

Curcumin (Tumeric Spice) - Decreases the production of the cytokine TNF-a. This is the yellow compound in turmeric spice. Research shows that this may be very good for preventing a cytokine storm although this is not proven ( http://www.pdrhealth.com - www.pdrhealth.com ). Must be taken with food or gastritis or peptic ulcers may occur. Pregnant women and feeding mothers should avoid this. The medicinal properties of curcurnin cannot be utilised when used alone due to rapid metabolism in the liver and intestinal wall. When combined with Piperine found in black pepper the absorption is increased with no adverse effects.( http://www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/pip_0322 - www.pdrhealth.com/drug_info/pip_0322 )
Obtainable from health stores in tablets, liquid, capsules already combined with piperine. Dosage is 500mg to 4000mg daily.
Recommended product: Tumeric from the supermarket

Astragalus root (Astragali Radix) - Boosts immune system (Pubmed PMID 15588652)

Tea tree Steam Inhalation - Reduces the cytokine TNF-a. Add 2 drops of tea tree oil in a bowl of steaming water. Cover head with a towel and inhale for 5 to 10 minutes. Relieves congestion and fights infection. Its effectiveness is unknown. (Pubmed PMID 11131302)
................................................................

The following substances may be best to avoid during a H5N1 pandemic

Not Recommended
Elderberry juice (Sambucal) - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. This substance is very effective against the common flu but may not be desirable for the H5N1 Bird Flu virus. Increases in these cytokines may trigger a lethal cytokine storm. (Isr Med Journal2002 Nov;4:944-6)
Not Recommended
Micro Algae (Chlorella and Spirulina) - Increases production of cytokine TNF-a (Pubmed PMID 11731916)

Not Recommended
Honey - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6 (Pubmed PMID 12824009)

Not Recommended
Chocolate - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6 (Pubmed PMID 12885154, PMID 10917928)

Not Recommended
Echinacea - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. Although it is often used for normal flu, research shows that it may increase the chance of cytokine storms for H5N1 (Pubmed PMID 15556647, 9568541)

Not Recommended
Kimchi - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6 (Pubmed PMID 15630182)

Not Recommended
Dairy products & Bananas - These foods increase mucous production.

The FluBlok(R) vaccine has recently finished phase II clinical trials, where it has established safety and the ability to elicit a strong antibody response in humans.

"Since all the media used here are chemically stable and commercially available, the process can be easily scaled up for commercial manufacture," says Wang. "New FluBlok vaccines can be developed quickly and safely to address late appearing influenza viruses and to reduce the impact of a potential flu pandemic."

WHO has recognized an urgent need to develop cell culture techniques for influenza vaccine production. Vaccines prepared using Madin-Darby-Canine-Kidney (MDCK) and Vero cells (derived from human embryonic lung fibroblasts) have been given limited clinical trials. These cell culture systems offer the advantage of increasing vaccine production at short notice to meet unexpected demand or supplemental vaccine can be produced if a new antigenic variant is detected.

One of the problems associated with the use of current inactivated vaccines is the need to give repeated annual injections. The mucosal delivery of influenza vaccine would avoid the use of syringes and improve compliance."

You know, I just realized that there are newer findings on Elderberry than what some are looking at. 2001? In my notes from earlier this year I copied this;
Elderberries could combat bird flu
1.42PM, Wed Jan 18 2006

“Mumcuoglu, an Israeli virologist, was the first to discover elderberry constituents neutralize the activity of the hemagglutinin spikes found on the surface of several viruses. When these hemagglutinin spikes are deactivated the viruses can no longer pierce cell walls or enter the cell and replicate. Based on these findings, Sambucol, a syrup containing 38-percent standardized extract of black elderberry, was developed. Numerous studies using the Sambucol preparation have shown it to neutralize and reduce the infectivity of influenza viruses A and B, HIV strains and clinical isolates, and Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) strains and clinical isolates.”
Sambucus nigra or Elderberry

If you have higher levels of sialic acid in your blood, the virus binds to this before it gets to the sialic acid receptors."
I believe it was tested on canine cells and killed 99% of 8 types of flu virus including bf. There are other ways to  injest sialic acid. Mothers milk is highest, whey powder maybe next, but I stocked evaporated goat milk too. Goat milk and goat cheese is very high in these natural sugars.

Mountainwinds,
Is there any reason why I can't leave these elderberries in this vodka indefinitely?  I'm planning on calling all my sons and ask them to bring me 4 bottles of Vodka each (that'll floor 'em) but I suspect they already think I'm losing it so it doesn't matter. Thanks for the recipe and also where to buy Elderberry. I have been paying over $10.00 a pound; I ground it up in a coffee grinder and put it in capsules and bought  the syrup for the grandchildren  early this year. I checked and the shelf life was said to be two years. Wal-Mart now has an Elderberry Syrup for $6.00+. I don't know how it would compare to Sambucol which costs about 3 times as much.

Elderberries can be left in, I have had mine made for several months now and have not removed them.
Vodka must be 80 proof or better. Shelf life is years since it is basically vodka. Unlike some of the other types, (syrup or sambucol) it is a lot cheaper to make. Check the dosage on the bottles and you will see that it will cost a lot more than making it yourself.
And to get thru all three waves of the flu, the cost can be enormous.
I have made enough so I can start taking it before the flu ever hits my area. The elderberry will already be in my system, so any infection will be limited as the viral load will be kept to a minimum.

And to add, Sambucol contains Echinacea which is not a herb that should be taken for bird flu, as it does raise the cytokine levels.

Mountainwinds, I thank you so much for your help. I already feel better! I am aware that echinacea, dairy products, chocolate, bananas and honey all increase mucus which is bad if one already has the flu with secondary infection.  I have been following this a long time. I have also read a report which clearly states that the good stuff that may offer some protection (sialic acid) is a natural sugar and all traces are eliminated from the body within 8 hours. Based on that finding I will only dose when I think I am going into an area where I may be exposed as I don't believe it's something that "builds up." I am no expert- just an old grandma trying to put pieces together and if you have different findings I need to know. I think that if there is a strong, long lasting pandemic,  it will take a combination of things not just one magic bullet to get through it. You give of your time to try to help people. I really appreciate you. If I had your address I'd mail you some of my homemade soap!

Some info I've gathered;
Excuse me it last only 6 hours not 8!
 N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid)
http://www.innvista.com/health/nutrition/essensug/naceneur.htm - http://www.innvista.com/health/nutrition/essensug/naceneur.htm

Look here and note the content of sialic acid in milk, it’s high.
Survey of total sialic acid and Neu5Gc content of common food items
http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/2131556100/DC2 - http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/2131556100/DC2
Or mother’s milk.
“The breast fed infants, when compared with formula fed infants, were found to have almost two times more free sialic acid in saliva”
“The findings provide a preliminary indication that an exogenous source of sialic acids derived from human milk may contribute to higher concentrations of sialic acid in body fluids.”

I have checked on that too so I'll share what I found with you. I have a friend in Texas who said she has Elderberries she makes jellies out of. I checked some sources and include a link to an American edible Elderberry.
The one she uses is blue. I read somewhere that the red ones are poison.

I don't know if the anti-viral action would be the same. Vodka is high. I ordered the Elderberry and it was here 3 days later.

Red elderberry is poision, but seem to be OK after they are cooked.  Plus they don't have the medicinal properties anyway. (Or the blue ones either).
Even if they did, cooking (heat) would destroy the parts needed for medicinal purposes.
But as far as a medicinal tincture goes, is has to be the black.

MW,

A friend of mine is insisting that the berries must be cooked before soaking in the liquor. It is my understanding that one should just use dried uncooked sambucus nigra berries.

Who is correct?

No, do not cook them. Dried berries is the way yo go. It concentrates the medicinal properties in the berry, and then it released thru the soaking in the vodka.
There is a way to make this for children using a heat method, see my above posts, but a hot temp will ruin the berries.

Does it have to be vodka? Would a high proof brandy work as well?

Thanks,

Some people have used brandy with some good results, but most herbologists (spelling?) say that 80 proof or better vodka works best.

Its now 2008 and I'm hoping to reopen this discussion.

Does anyone know that proper dosage of elderberry tincture for flu victims (not preventative)?

There seems to be so many different opinions out there so I'm at a loss as to what is correct.  Thanks for your help!

I have to post something when i saw the lack of information on Sambucol or the Black Elderberries.

1. To answer the simplest question: Where you can buy Sambucol?
A: Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid, Cvs, or sambucol website. Plus Ebay has them very cheap because they buy them bulk.

2. Elderberries can be heated without losing it's properties of naturality. When heated, it created the extraction of the medicinal properties and flavor alone, and discards all unnecessary false nutrients. Kinda like apples (the only good part for you is the skin).

3. Using alcohol is the prolly the best method
4. The alternative that is effective just as much if not just under the potency of using alcohol, is simmering Dried elderberries with Cinnamon sticks, ginger cloves and peppermint leaves!;
Since the 12th century Kings and Queens have called Black Elderberries their Heavenly Cure for All ailments. At the time this was the most common form of medicine by the Court Physicians.
Today we know more in depth thanks to years of research.

Here is what Elderberries or Sambucol can cure (potentially and has had high clinical success rates)
1. Cancer cells
2. Avian Flu 100%
3. H1N1 all strands up to 75% success rate-Flu symptoms disappeared after a 3 day trial period with 130 subjects form 13 different universities.
4. Cleans your digestive system making you poop better which allows your cells and immunity to work stronger
5. Can eliminate benign and some cases malignant tumors (cancer cells or various types)
6. Mind Elixir: (alchemists and herbalists, and court physicians name this in the middle ages) it produces a state of calm, and relieves mental stress and some dillusionary psychological issues.
7. Healthy heart
8. breaks down fat and choloesterol.
9. boosts energy, immunity and overall health and if mixed with chamomile and echinacea, it can help with insomnia.

Recipe:
1 cup of Dried Elderberries
1/2cup of honey (1 cup is too much)
1/3cup of chamomile or echinacea or both(already made with 2 cups of boiled water).
2 cinnamon sticks (boiled with teh herbs-separate from dried elderberries)

Than mix the two and let them cool. It would be wise to let each one steep for 20minutes before mixing.
Adding Lemon juice and one lemon peel can preserve this syrup or drink for up to 3 months. So make the biggest batch you want.

The only thing I suggest is making the elderberries separate. Remember to strain the berries after boiling.

make sure after you boil the elderberries to let it simmer on low heat for about 10-20minutes, discarding regularly whatever surfaces (gunk)..

Thats it.

I recommend looking up on elderberries and the best way to use them.

Sambucol can get expensive. I believe at online stores like vitamin shoppe it can cost up to 12$ per 4oz. I found some on ebay for 3 for that same price.

Happy Herbaling!
