With so many people concerend about their pets I thought this topic is one that should be addressed directly. I hope those who have some expertise with particular animals will post on this topic.
For me this is an everyday issue. I raise rabbits for showing and occasionally sell a rabbit or two for pets. Though the number I have is small when compared to others who breed and show rabbits our concerns are the same. Good sanitation and hygiene practices are every bit as important as what kind of food we feed and how it is stored. Many people do not know it but rabbits are very delicate creatures and it takes very little to make them sick. If we are not diligent about good sanitation it can kill our entire herd.
We often use vinegar as a cleaning agent as it is safer to use around our rabbits than many chemicals. Another thing we us is product that is manufactured in the UK called Vanodine. We use it to clean cages, food dishes, water bottles, even the rabbits at shows and at home. It is gentle enough to even be used as an eye wash. It can be used to sanitize drinking water even. It is safe for use with dogs, goats, sheep, horses, cows, birds, pigs... It kills bacteria, viruses and fungi.
Here in the U.S. the only distributor I know of is Barbi Brown's Bunnies (3B's Rabbitry) in Manteca, CA: http://www.barbibrownsbunnies.com/fam30.htm - http://www.barbibrownsbunnies.com/fam30.htm Her website can explain the many uses of this product more in depth than I can. We purchase this product from her and have been very satisfied with it.
Or you can visit the manufacture's website, Evans Vanodine International: http://www.evansvanodine.co.uk/homepage.htm - http://www.evansvanodine.co.uk/homepage.htm
If anyone knows of products that are useful to help keep our pets, farm animals and ourselves healthier I hope you will share your knowledge on this forum.
