I have been researching N95 masks. I have read that the masks sold at Home Depot, Lowes, etc are not the same as the medical supply N95 masks. In particular the ones sold at construction stores will only protect for small dust particles and not for viruses. I do see people here however recommending to buy the construction N95 masks as they are cheaper. Can anyone give info to set the facts straight?

There are probably half a dozen N95-rated models from 3M alone, and that's not counting the ones with exhilation valves, and I'm very curious, too, as to how much "real world" difference there is between the basic models and the ones that cost over twice as much. |

Standard surgical masks have been withdrawn from the market in Australia. Apparently they are being sent to the National Medical Stockpile for hospitals etc.
I have 350 of these, and plan to use two at once, one over the other, if in a high danger place unavoidably.

OZ, NOT a wise idea. You do NOT get better protection. GREATLY increases chance that unfiltered air will "sneak in " around the seal. Gilmore . . |

do you have some reports, studies etc. to back this up. I would like to make sure if I buy them from homedepot they will provide same protection as the medical approved mask.

2 is better than 1 if your going to be around contagens.
N95 is N95 is N95. There are models with exhaust ports that are a little more comfotable because of less heat, HOWEVER, if someone is coughing, they should not wear this since they will be expelling unfiltered droplets.
These masks may not filter all virus, they are designed to filter the mists and droplets that contain virus.
If you want more protection look for half-mask and full mask N100 respirators with cartridges. The next step up is a PAPR. This is a powered N100 respirator that delivers a flow of filtered air to your mask vs. the need to inhale the air thru the cartrifge filters. These are used in hospitals. However, if you will be the care-giver at home, you just became a hospital.
