>>>An Italian liqueur made from elderberries and flavored with licorice.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Perhaps a shot before bed everynight to help you sleep, plus the effects of the berries.  Taken prophylactically.  Perhaps stop if symptoms develop (I haven't decided about this whole cyto storm thing yet.)

I would worry of dehydration, if sick.  I also understand: "At intoxicating levels, alcohol is a vasodilator (it causes blood vessels to relax and widen), but at even higher levels, it becomes a vasoconstrictor, shrinking the vessels and increasing blood pressure, exacerbating such conditions as atherosclerosis."  But don't know the ramifications.  This could exacerbate the "bleeding out"problem.

I guess my thought would be an ounce or 2 before bed for everyone (over age 12?) UNTIL they showed syptoms, and then stop and treat other ways.

Any thoughts?

p.s.  red wine appears to have the good stuff too.....perhaps a glass with dinner...

Just shooting from the hip here.....not much help from the Establishment...but then I guess I wouldnt expect them to advocate drinking alcohol, or giving it to your teens....that just wouldnt be "right".  even if it might save their lives...

And to any who are appalled that I might give my 12 year old a shot of sambuca or a glass of wine, let me remind you that those of us who are older than 40 received many doses of alcohol and even NARCOTICS in the OTC meds we were given as children.  Most of us are normal...Wink

Where did you get the idea of sambuca as a preventative?

My straight-laced, prim and proper grandmother drank a small glass of wine each night before going to bed.

She lived to be 94.

I did pick up some elderberry extract and sambucol syrup but planned to use them if any of us becomes sick.

No authority here. I only read about them here on the forum.

The elderberry/sambucol theory has been explored many times before on this forum.  There is the firm believe(studies, research) elderberry/sambucol might actually aggravate BF symptoms.  Elderberry might be effective against regular type of Influenza A, but not the avian flu virus.

Studies are wrong, and flawed.

Mountainwinds:  Sorry to say that in this particular case, the studies are far from flawed, it is all about immunologic response to this virus ( lenghty discussion) and its reaction to the BF virus+ elderberries/sambucol.  AF generates 10Xtimes  stronger cytokine response in the human body as a regular type A influenza, therefore it is the reaction of the immune system to this lipid coated virus that generates the chain of reaction with such high mortality rate, I believe it stands at 67%,  Elderberries/sambucol/astralagus etc have properties to suppport and enhance the immune system functioning, therefore increasing the possibility of a stronger cytokine reaction when paired with AF virus.  We are all so neophytes ( this includes most of us, in addition to scientist, immunologist etc) as to the full understanding of how this virus works, that is why we have not found the way as of yet to develop an effective way of stopping this virus= vaccine.  This is just informational material but I couldn't let go of the thought of people ingesting elderberries and or sambucol and possibly dozens of other remedies without giving a fair chance to additional information.  This is Just FYI..  I am not here to continue arguing this point.  I encourage people to read and get educate and then make your own choices, based on credible, accurate, information.Wink

I got the idea from the fact that Sambucol, an OTC supplement supposedly helps kill flu.  It is made from Black Elderberries.  I just went a step further and Sambuca (and elderberry wine, for that matter) are made from elderberries, also.  Sambuca just adds anise/licorice.

Cal and MW, THATS exactly why I am unsure about this whole elderberry thing.  That's why I would probably use it prophylactically, once a day or so, until I ro someone got sick, and switch to other stuff.

Sambuca....the Liquor, not a good medicine for bird flu. Elderberry tincture has to be made with vodka, as other liquors have ingredients that will take up the space the elderberries need to be adsorbed into.

Nor will wine work, nor the juice of other fruits and berries that people keep refering to. This has to be a tincture which is made from whatever herb is used.

Sambucol contains Echinacea which does increase the cytokine levels. Sambucol is what was used in the tests that everyone uses to say elderberries are bad. I am taking mine before the flu hits, so if I do catch it, the viral load will be kept to a minimum and the cytokine storm will never happen.

FYI;  Check into Lauric Acid, there is quite a bit of information on the net as to its properties and what role it might play concerning BF. Lauric acid is naturally found in coconuts ( pills are also available as a derivative under the name of Lauricidil )  in addition, research ORegano oil and its potent properties, you might be surprised....

my father loves to drink wine everyday. For me i love it to cause i get a real good night of sleep...
but the pricipal aspect is that for my father, it makes him look younger and healthier than most people around.
I compare him to his brother who does not drink and feels always tired.
look at whats around you, won't you help to change all of it??

Maybe we should all just take a shot a day anyway, loosen us up a bit and make us relax.  Just a thought of course
The only way to grow is to take a chance.

red wine contains a phytonuitrient called resveratrol. Resveratrol prevents influenza virus replication within the cell, it's found in red grapes and in dark colored berries. I'm including a product called Monavie in my preps, as well as the whole family is already using it daily now. CIDRAP has done some studies with resveratrol for a possible subsitute for Tamiflu. Since Tamiflu will most likely be ineffective, IMHO, the studies I've seen with resveratrol would seem at the very least to give one at least a fighting chance in case of exposure. It's all a toss up though, even the Tamiflu. Best bet is still going to be isolation.
