Since the 17th january South Korea is trying to control an outbreak of H5N8 flu-outbreak in several kinds of (wild)birds. Almost 1% of the birds on farms have been killed but the outbreak keeps spreading due to wild birds.

http://world.kbs.co.kr/english/news/news_Ec_detail.htm?No=100566 H5N8 is spreading further in South Korea (and is now also in a province bordering North Korea !). Wild birds play a major role in the spread, I expect H5N8 will go to North Korea, and even further....

For more on the the threat of avian influenza expanding across the country and ways to contain the potential damage from the virus, we are joined in the studio by Dr. Seo Sang-heui professor of Veterinary Medicine at Chungnam National University.
Thank you for joining us.

Good to be here.

1. There were fears that the spread of the bird flu virus would reach its peak during the Lunar New Year holiday at a time when about two-thirds of 50 million Koreans travel across the country. How critical is the current situation?

2. How bad might this get? And do you expect the spread to continue for a while?

3. Health authorities have yet to identify the exact cause of the outbreak, but they presume migratory birds are the main culprits. What role have they played in this problem?

4. Avian influenza has hit Korea four times since 2003 yet we have failed over and over again to stop the virus from spreading across the nation. Are there shortcomings in the government's preventive measures against the epidemic or is there more to it than that?

5. They say unlike a few other strains of bird flu the H5-N8 strain poses no immediate threat to people. How concerned should people be of human infections and even eating poultry?

Answer on question 5; H5N8 can infect human lungs because the lungs have the same receptors as birds. (Do I get that right ?) This virus is on its way to North Korea. Of course health care in this "paradise" is the best you can get (sarcasm !), I smell a problem !

Abstract

One H5N8 and three H5N5 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses which derived their HA genes from the Asian H5N1 lineage were isolated from poultry during 2009–2010 in mainland China. Pathogenicity studies showed that these viruses were all highly virulent to chickens, while they varied from moderate to high virulence in mice and from mild to intermediate virulence in mallards. Phylogenetic analyses showed that these viruses were reassortants bearing the H5N1 backbone while acquiring PB1, NP and NA genes from unidentified non-H5N1 viruses, and had developed into three distinct genotypes (B–D). Molecular characterization indicated that all these viruses might resist to antiviral agents. Our findings highlight the emergence and development of HPAI H5 viruses of other NA subtypes in H5N1 endemic areas and their potential threat to poultry industry and public health.
