Because I think Dutchsinse is not talking stupid ! http://dutchsinse.com/4302015-volcanic-eruption-off-west-coast-united-states-oregon-undersea-volcano-now-erupting/
If it turns out he was incorrect (and my postings turn out to be too) I can live with it ! I hope he is wrong-I am not waiting for (Japan) an other earthquake M8,5-M9,5 in West Pacific !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8owFGKnd1Cw For Europe coming week (may 1-8) earthquakes expected Turkey and then further Northern Italy. In the America's Peru-Nicaragua-region, western Canada and several parts of US M5. Also further build-up like in 2011 in Asia (Sumatra-Indonesia Philipines Japan)
I sure hope he is wrong !

Ok, so how do we prep for volcanoes? I figure I would need shovels to keep the ash off the roof, tape and plastic inside the house over the windows and doors. Plenty of water...the first thing to store up as soon as you know an ash cloud is coming. Any other suggestions?
As far as earthquakes...oh well hope the house stands and is good!! |

When you live near an active vulcano you might consider moving elsewere ? In Naples Italy people are paid by the government to move away from Vesuvius-volcano.

Albert, I think there are similarities between pandemics and geological events. History shows both are frequent visitors ! It is not "if" but "when"they strike. Of course we are in the middle of several "pandemics", HIV/Aids, tuberculosis, malaria etc.
The combination of war/disaster with an illness (like in Haïti after the earthquake in 2010-M7 with cholera from peace-keepers from Nepal being blamed. The cholera-virus was the same as present in Nepal and might have arrived in Haïti by contaminated mail) can create a pandemic. Human behaviour makes things worse (Spanish flu at least spread by military parades and movements in 1918-if it was not a bio-weapon out of control from possibly a lot of countries that were looking after bio-weapons ). Also now in Nepal the "disaster-after-the-disaster"will be all kind of illness.

Interesting, he said California would have an Earthquake between May 2nd - May 5th of 7.0?
We (Los Angeles area) just had a 3.9 this morning. This guy is on it. Let's hope he was a little off on the 7.0 by May 5th and this was the one. Still quite remarkable. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-earthquakesa-earthquake-39-quake-strikes-near-view-park-windsor-hills-calif-onvisi-story.html |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLLeCuPMKGg Dutchsins focussing on the US mostly. But there is also unrest in New Zealand. The unrest in southern Europe may result in unrest (M4+) in NW Europe when I follow his reasoning. UK. BeNeLux, France or Germany getting an earthquake in may ?

Also global, worldwide, a lot of things on the move ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwmDjU8FYqU and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpPGJXgbwBmkIp291W0PCMw I am concerned about any major earthquake in Japan. It could mean lots of nuclear further damage. A tsunami from Japan could send radioactive debris high speed across the planet. http://fukushima-diary.com/2015/05/increasing-volcanic-earthquake-and-inflation-of-the-volcanic-edifice-observed-in-mt-hakone-measured/ and http://fukushima-diary.com/2015/05/fukushima-prefectural-government-warned-volcanic-gas-density-jumped-up-over-double-in-mt-azumasan/
For the US, and elsewere, nuclear powerplans, dams, increase the dangers of a major earthquake. I was trying to get some statistics to see if, statisticly, there is an increase in earthquakes worldwide. The USGS database on its website is not very helpfull in getting that clear. But when you look at the "big events" (M8, M9) it seems to me there is an increase. That increase might be related to global warming, melting of frozen grouds, decrease of stability. I hope that, when there is an increase in geo-activity, things calm down and damage remains limited.

That increase might be related to global warming, melting of frozen grouds, decrease of stability. Here is a different explanation Matthew 24:6-8 King James Version (KJV)6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. |

hachiban08, that 3.9 is part of a whole cloud of minor quakes in the LA area. (As can be seen on the USGS-site). Stay safe !

I did take another look at Dutchsinse his forecast for the week may 1-8. At minute 6 he is expecting major movement in the Philipines-Viet Nam. There were two 5.1 quakes and a 5.9 more or less in the area described.
At minute 9 he is expecting compensation movement from Nepal towards Turkey/Italy. There was a 4.7 in Greece, some other movement 4+ in Croatia, Turkey. But that is not unusual in that area. At minute 13 for the US 4+ movement central and California. There was a 3.8 in California, a 4.2 in Michigan (as was predicted min.18.40). In the B.C. Vancouver area he expected at least a 5.0 event, turns out to be the 3.7 in Washington-state. Minute 17 expected 5+ in Peru-Nicaragua area. There was a 4.8 in Guatamala, two 4,7 in Colombia and Peru. After this Dutchsinse speaks of build-up for major movement like in 2011. Another mega-quake 9+ for Japan within a few months ? At 21.30 the 7.2(downgraded 6.8) at P.N.G. wich he correctly predicted. And he links that to earlier deep movement around Fiji. Putting it all together does Dutchsinse convince me ? I think he makes more sense in predicting futere quakes than some other people. There is some logics in it. The coming days might proof him to more correct than he would like to be (also about increasing volcanic activity in California http://dutchsinse.com/5082015-dormant-supervolcano-in-california-shows-movement-below-sign-of-california-pressure/ Earthquakes, pressures, is very complicated. Just like other "big events" pandemics, ice-ages, tornado's, earthquakes keep happening around the globe. Dutchsinse forecast might be better than looking at USGS for the last week to see what the coming week might bring. But sometimes they might look quite similar ! |

M9 in P.N.G. ? The M9 Japan earthquake of march 11- 2011 had a prelude there from several M6-7 two days before the M9 in the same area. The day before (march 10) the M9 struck Japan there was a deep 6.5 quake in the Bali-sea (Indonesia at 510.6 km deep).
On the other hand volcano-activity is developing fast in Japan http://dutchsinse.com/5082015-eleven-large-volcanic-eruptions-in-1-days-time-south-japan-at-sakurajima-volcano/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2BVf9pEcBMA The december 26-2004 M9 Sumatra earthquake saw two deep M5.8's in the Fiji region (dec 17 at 593 km and dec 24 at 614,5 km and a 5,8 at Tonga dec 20 at 227.8 km)

Dutchsinse.com keeps predicting a large earthquake for the west-pacific. The Japan-6.8 might be a for-shock. There was a M4.5 at a depth of 418.7 km near Wallis and Futuna. That might lead to a major (8+) quake to the north-west of that location. That means Papua-New Guinea-Japan area this week.

http://fukushima-diary.com/ might be interesting to follow. Before the last 6.8 quake volcanic activity increased at Mt. Hakone. Also temperatures going up in reactor-2 Fukushima. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Hio-VDWG2o and https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQHopfPwfFjn37JgO1l-axg
A major quake 8+ or a large eruption not far from Tokyo is bad news.

There is a pdf, "The Largest Earthquakes We Should Prepare For-Fuji Press" it is from 2014 and an evaluation from the M9 2011 quake. A M10 quake would last over 10 minutes, a M11 quake would mean seismic activity over a fault-line from Alaska to New Zealand-20.000 km and movement over 500 meters. It is impossible to measure and would be "very dramatic".
One of the many problems in these calculations is how much movement is possible at great depths. The deeper the movement the larger a possible magnitude. You do not need a collision with an asteroid the have a M10+, movements in the earth itself, plates colliding or volcanic, might produce M10+ quakes. Such an event would change conditions on earth for a very long time. Maybe some people in bunkers might survive such an event but will find out that earth has turned into another planet years later.

http://dutchsinse.com/5142015-45-miles-from-tokyo-japan-dormant-for-800-years-mt-hakone-could-soon-erupt/ the "good thing"about erupting volcanoes and smaller earthquakes is that it can release pressure so a "mega-quake" becomes less likely.

Am I right in thinking the largest ever recorded earthquake on earth was a 9.5 in Chile in 1960. Is it possible to have a larger earthquake?
We've had a lot of felt earthquakes here in NZ in the last few weeks. NZ gets dozens of quakes every day but most are not felt by anyone. Of course we are expecting the Alpine Fault to rupture at any moment. It last went 297 years ago in 1717 and it's return time is 300 years + or - 30 years. According to the probability experts, it is more likely to rupture this afternoon than tomorrow morning. It is expected to be an 8.2 or larger.

Flumom, I hope it does rupture, and while I'm young enough to enjoy it. I studied the Alpine Fault in a short course at the local university and find the whole thing fascinating. It's a fact of life in New Zealand that you get earthquakes. I don't think you ever get over the feeling of awe at the power of nature.
The biggest quake I've been through was a 7.1 and it shook our whole house not just side to side, but up and down as well. How much power is needed to move an entire landmass. It was an amazing feeling and I didn't feel frightened until afterwards and we were scrambling to get out of the house at 4.35am in case another larger one came. There was so much movement that I was being thrown up and down on the bed, for about 45 seconds.
In the Feb 11 quake that killed 180 people in Christchurch, they pulled out the body of a young woman and her baby. She had been pushing her pushchair along Colombo Street and the parapets above smashed through the verandah and killed them both. It was exactly where I used to shop, near all the second hand bookshops and even now I think there, but for the grace of God, go I. It so easily could have been me and one of my babies. It's a sobering thought. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_earthquakes in the 19th century a 9,2 9 (aprox) 1833 Sumatra and a 9.0 1868 Chili. That seem to be the spots for severe earthquakes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_earthquakes#Largest_earthquakes_by_magnitude
In 1952 at Kamchatka (eastern Russia) there also was a 9.0. But the Valdivia-Chili-1960 earthquake with a 9.5 (or 9.6 ?) was the biggest quake in recent history. Both the Alaska 1964 and Chili 1960 quake caused a tsunami but still the number of people died was limited. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_natural_disasters_by_death_toll#Earthquakes The 1935 Richterscale http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale is based on formula and makes some statistics possible. A meteor-strike at Yucatan 65 milion years ago had a M 13. Here in the Netherlands earthquakes are not very common, but I experienced a 4.5 in 2011. In 1992 we had a 5.8 but I was sleeping at that moment..... In theory earth can produce bigger than M9.5 is possible, a M10+ is very unlikely.

http://earthscience.stackexchange.com/questions/875/are-richter-magnitude-10-earthquakes-possible Once in a 100 to 30.000 years might have a M10-but not enough data is available. (CNN)Rats deserting a city before a devastating earthquake may be the stuff of folklore, but scientists believe that animals really could hold the key to a quake early warning system. Reports of pets vanishing or wildlife disappearing ahead of large earthquakes had previously been anecdotal, but an international study has for the first time documented changes in wild animal behavior before a seismic event. |

Josh, I had one of my beehives open on the morning of the 6.3 quake that killed 180 people in my local city. It was about 2 hours before the quake and I noticed that they were behaving oddly, and flying very low to the ground. I actually mentioned their odd behaviour to my family. And not just around the hive, as I walked back to the house I noticed they were all flying below knee height.
Then a month or so later I had a hive open when an earthquake struck. I was working the hive as normal when suddenly the bees started buzzing very loudly. There was no reason for it, the sun was shining, it was a warm day, I hadn't knocked the hive or dropped a frame but they became very aggressive very quickly so I started to put the hive back together. A minute or two later I heard a quake coming and stood still hugging the hive as it was a large hive of 5 or 6 supers and the last thing I want to happen is for it to fall over on me. The second the quake passed the bees calmed down. I also know of a local farmer who was outside on the morning of our first big quake (a 7.1 in Sept 10). He was about to milk his dairy herd and noticed that even though it was pitch black outside, all the birds were singing. And I mean all, it was very loud. Then they suddenly stopped. A moment or two later he saw multiple flashes of light but they were coming up from the ground around his farm, not down from the sky like lightning. A minute later the big quake hit. These flashes of light were static electricity. There were a few people out and about just before that quake and a number of people reported the birdsong and the flashes. I was deeply asleep when the quake struck, but something woke my husband and he heard it coming. He rushed through to our boys room and spent the duration holding their bunk beds hard against the wall. I've been leading a cow when an earthquake came and she paid no attention to it at all.

KiwiMum, I think animals might be able to pick up signals that humans mis. We take our way of looking at things as "complete" but in fact most lights and sounds "vibes" simply escapes us because our senses can not pick up those frequencys.
Animals might work like canarysin mines, an early warning system. We should listen better to animals !

Spot on Josh, but I think the signals are detectable to our sense organs: it is our brains which miss them. We humans are so wrapped up in our world's obvious side we fail to spot the little clues.
Just before noticeable seismic activity our cats all start quarreling and hubby and I start having dizzy spells. But, it took us over a decade to put the clues together. Now, whilst sitting on my behind and watching the umpteenth cat-fight, I am wont to say: "I wonder which poor s**s are due a quake this time?" Evolution dictates that those wild animals who alter their behaviour according to the tiny, quiet signals are the ones more likely to live long enough to breed. Which is why it is more common in wild animals.
This does not apply to us for whom the dictates of civilization swamp the instinctive responses (over 10 years is not a good survival response time) or those for whom the evolutionary pressures are diverted, just like KiwiMum's cow.

Technophobe, "electrical polution" might block signals coming from the earth. Dutchsinse is expecting a "megaquake m8+" still building up. I expect such a quake NW of Fiji were there is a proces of deep (more than 100 kilometres) quakes. But the area might be Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Japan and even north from there (Kamchatka-Alaska ?).
Recent events along the North American Pacific coast indicate also increase of pressure there. When hole plates start to move that will result in more quakes south of the first "wave". The southern region in Chile has a history of very strong quakes which were the follow-ups of earlier movements more north-west. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake The first Concepción earthquake was at 06:02 UTC-4 on 21 May 1960. Its epicenter was near Curanilahue. Telecommunications to southern Chile were cut off and President Jorge Alessandri cancelled the traditional ceremony of the Battle of Iquique memorial holiday to oversee the emergency assistance efforts. The second and third Concepción earthquakes occurred the next day at 06:32 UTC-4 and14:55 UTC-4, on 22 May. These earthquakes formed a southward migrating foreshock sequence to the main Valdivia shock, which occurred just 15 minutes after the third event.[6] USGS has a search option and when you look at developments from april 1 to may 23 1960 you can see a "ballet"of quakes resulting in a "crescendo" in southern Chile from may 21.

West coast United States showing multiple dormant volcano earthquakes , as well as a new pipeline rupture along the coast of Santa Barbara (South California).
Internationally, mainly focusing a new look on Taiwan, keep watch South of Japan going into North Philippines. Now we're on serious watch along the Coast of the Pacific Northwest , Washington State to BC... since it did NOT move this past week as expected. We are now watching SOUTH of Baja California near Mexico City for a possible large earthquake, sure hope I'm wrong on that. Turkey and Greece.. keep watch for 6.0M+ earthquake activity. New volcanic eruptions should pop off in Chile again.. and a large earthquake should strike Colombia into Panama (above 6.0M) East coast United States now needs to be on SERIOUS watch for either a swarm of earthquakes , or a single larger event from Virginia North along the edge of the Craton to South Quebec / New Brunswick. Could either be a series of smaller swarms, or a single event that gets everyones attention (above 4.0M). Texas.. Oklahoma, Kansas.... you can expect the swarms to spread across the Texas craton edge... Oklahoma + Kansas.. due for mid-upper 4.0M earthquakes that should shake everything up. Keep watch. _______ Download a copy of earthquake 3D here: http://www.wolton.net/quake.html _______ Very odd geologic steam plume event across the West coast captured by tatoott1009: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y3mT... _______ Salton Sea California volcanic swarm: http://dutchsinse.com/5202015-souther... _______ Oil pipeline rupture near Los Angeles CA: http://dutchsinse.com/5192015-rupture... _______ Swarm of earthquakes in Los Angeles due East of Oil Pipeline rupture: http://dutchsinse.com/5042015-califor... _______ New Yellowstone magma chamber activity: http://dutchsinse.com/5182015-yellows... ______ Mount Hood Oregon dormant volcano earthquake: http://dutchsinse.com/5152015-west-co... _______ Glacier Peak dormant volcano earthquake: http://dutchsinse.com/5152015-another... _______ Two Sisters (Twin Peaks) dormant volcano earthquake: https://www.facebook.com/DutchsinseOf... ________ Mammoth Mountain dormant volcano earthquake: http://dutchsinse.com/5152015-fourth-... _______ Markagunt Plateau volcano earthquake: http://dutchsinse.com/5152015-third-d... _______ Bitner Butte volcano earthquake: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquake... ________ New eruption off the coast of Oregon: http://dutchsinse.com/4302015-volcani... |

http://dutchsinse.com/5222015-erupting-volcano-earthquakes-off-west-coast-of-oregon-whole-coast-moved-over-48-hours/
Dutchsinse issues a major warning for West Canada and California/North Mexico. Pressure release might come in "smaller events" or "major (M6+) events". Also warnings for west pacific, Turkey/Greece, Nepal. The last week forcast for UK/Benelux in my opinion was correct. What did change in his expectations is increasing risks for the west-pacific-coast on North America. The point of warning people is that that warning should motivate them to think what is good preparation. California has a problem with drinking water. A major event will worsen that situation dramaticly. I hope Dutchsinse is wrong !

http://dutchsinse.com/5222015-extremely-rare-5-4-magnitude-earthquake-strike-south-nevada/
Also a number of after (?) shocks... After a flurry of West coast earthquake activity yesterday going into this morning (May 22), now an extremely rare 5.4M earthquake has struck South Nevada. Additionally, a new swarm of earthquakes is now developing at the South Nevada epicenter. |

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck Nevada on Friday close to the small town of Caliente, northeast of the tourist hub of Las Vegas, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It said the epicenter of the quake, which was quite shallow at a depth of only 12 miles (19.4 km), was 24 miles from Caliente, a town of just over 1,000 people, close to the border with Utah. A dispatcher with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, near the quake's epicenter, said it had been felt widely across the county, but that there were no immediate reports of damage. The quake, which the USGS said was followed less than 20 minutes later by a smaller 3.8 magnitude temblor, could be felt as far away as Las Vegas, about 100 miles to the southwest. |
