Major earthquake activity for the Oregon-coast. The latest 5.9 (USGS downgraded it from Magnitude 6.0)was stronger than the 5,8 june 1st. On Dutchsinse-facebook people are wondering whether this swarm(8 earthquakes in 24 hours ? USGS is showing 7, Global incindent map 8) of 3.9(+) quakes is an indication for a stronger quake. Also in California yet another volcanic quake http://dutchsinse.com/6012015-volcanic-earthquake-in-south-california-volcano-peak-shows-activity/

Some noteworthy reactions from Dutchsinse-Facebook:

  • Daniel Dowty Though it is really close...the volcano that has these earthquakes around it are 312 miles off shore. The Cascadia fault line is about 50 miles off shore. Two entirely different faults. But I do agree the Cascadia fault is over due, records in Japan support these claims.

  • Tatiacha Bhodsvatan yep although the cascadia would not have any effect on San Francisco it goes down to around Eureka CA where it meets the San Andreas it is unknown if a big Cascadia could set off a quake on the northern San Andreas or if so in what period of time. They believe the southern end of the Cascadia ruptures more often then the whole of the fault so it is possible to see a big cascadia quake that ruptures from Eureka CA to about Newport Or without the northern part of the fault rupturing, I live in the southern section so I pay close attention

Climate change means pressure on the "plates" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_tectonics is being redistributed resulting in more earthquakes and volcanic activity. Droughts might further play a role in volcanic activity ?

The article does not connect climate change to increase in earthquakes, that is my interpretation. But looking at statistics there is a strong correlation between climate change and seismic activity. Other studies do link climate change with earthquakes http://www.rawstory.com/2011/04/climate-can-drive-seismic-shifts-study/  and http://www.carbonbrief.org/blog/2012/06/can-climate-change-cause-earthquakes/ and

http://thewatchers.adorraeli.com/2015/06/09/cosmic-solar-radiation-as-the-cause-of-earthquakes-and-volcanic-eruptions/

During solar minimum high energy cosmic radiation can penetrate to a very deep distance below the Earth’s surface, in some case a few hundred kilometers. This is the reason why most if not all earthquakes during solar minimum are deep earthquakes. The stress on the Magnetosphere during solar minimum is higher because the Heliosphere is weaker and more high energy charged particles can penetrate the solar system. On the average, the flux of cosmic rays is 20% higher during solar minimum. But, if the Sun, is in its highest position in the galaxy-which is also the time when the Earth would be in its final phase of magnetic field reversal-then the impact of cosmic radiation on both the Heliosphere and Magnetosphere is higher even during solar maximum. At that position the Heliosphere is at its weakest state due to a very intense bombardment from high energy radiations.

After the past month of excessive earthquake activity showing over 20 events above M6.0 over the past 30 days..... the past 3 days saw a dramatic "silencing off" of events, now followed over the past 24 hours (up to June 10, 2015) by a new series of deep earthquakes in Fiji, as well as unrest showing in South America (Chile / Argentina border) with a 6.0M event.

West Pacific showing multiple events as well, including the new large eruption threat at Sinabung Volcano, and Toba super-volcano.

The "domino-theory" in action http://dutchsinse.com/6122015-earthquake-progression-across-6700-miles-in-24-hours-proved/ There has been debate amongst “professionals” in the fields of Geology, and Seismology as to whether or not earthquakes can cause other earthquakes (elsewhere across a vast distance).Today, June 12 2015, that debate may be coming to an end, and we may begin to see new series of studies built upon today’s events.  I consider this a breakthrough discovery.

What event(s) am I speaking of?

A noteworthy, and rather obvious progression of magnitude 5.2 earthquakes occurred in the West Pacific, spanning over 6,700 miles (10,800km) in just a few hours time.

The earthquake progression began in Tonga with a M6.0 earthquake, which was then followed by three subsequent M5.2 earthquakes which struck a direct line from Tonga to Sumatra Indonesia (Indo-Australian Ridge).

The USGS still claim that the number of earthquakes is not increasing eventhough they can not longer deny that both fracking and climate change (in other words the oil-and gas-industries) are causing an increase in earthquakes. When government and international scientific organizations become to dependent on private financing (wether those "private groups"are oil companies or big pharma) they stop functioning for general interest.

Deep earthquakes both Indonesia latest of three http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us20002ptz#general_summary) and (south of) Japan http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us20002pss#general_summary.
When I follow Dutchsinse in his interpretation deep earthquakes translate in shallow earthquakes with a magnitude +1 or +2 to the north-west. That could mean SE China getting a M6 or M7 in coming days ? (My Dutchjosh-interpretation)

For the US Oklahoma seeing new unrest. http://dutchsinse.com/6142015-large-m4-3-fracking-earthquake-strikes-central-oklahoma-midwest-united-states-california-dormant-volcano-moving/

Dutchsinse:
A noteworthy magnitude 4.3 earthquake has struck a central Oklahoma fracking operation.

This comes on the heels of additional craton movement which was documented this morning in another post regarding this current midwest earthquake unrest.

Also, yesterday (June 13 2015) another noteworthy M4.0 earthquake struck a different fracking operation in Alberta Canada (far to the NW of Oklahoma).

I stopped posting links to Dutchsinse, if people are interested in him they can find him themselves. I do not always agree with Dutchsinse. A "deep-earthquake" (>100km) is not always followed by a larger more shallow quake.

On the other hand as far as I can see there is an increase in seismic and volcanic activity worldwide that people have to prepare for.

Looking at history the 1960 M9.6 Chili earthquake may not be the largest kind of quake possible. There will be an increase in M9+ quakes (and the tsunami's that come with that) within years.

Part of the explanation for the increase in seismic/volcanic activity is proberbly human. From climate change to fracking "we" may have started a proces that is very difficult to control.

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/07/20/the-really-big-one

Take your hands and hold them palms down, middle fingertips touching. Your right hand represents the North American tectonic plate, which bears on its back, among other things, our entire continent, from One World Trade Center to the Space Needle, in Seattle. Your left hand represents an oceanic plate called Juan de Fuca, ninety thousand square miles in size. The place where they meet is the Cascadia subduction zone. Now slide your left hand under your right one. That is what the Juan de Fuca plate is doing: slipping steadily beneath North America. When you try it, your right hand will slide up your left arm, as if you were pushing up your sleeve. That is what North America is not doing. It is stuck, wedged tight against the surface of the other plate.

Without moving your hands, curl your right knuckles up, so that they point toward the ceiling. Under pressure from Juan de Fuca, the stuck edge of North America is bulging upward and compressing eastward, at the rate of, respectively, three to four millimetres and thirty to forty millimetres a year. It can do so for quite some time, because, as continent stuff goes, it is young, made of rock that is still relatively elastic. (Rocks, like us, get stiffer as they age.) But it cannot do so indefinitely. There is a backstop—the craton, that ancient unbudgeable mass at the center of the continent—and, sooner or later, North America will rebound like a spring. If, on that occasion, only the southern part of the Cascadia subduction zone gives way—your first two fingers, say—the magnitude of the resulting quake will be somewhere between 8.0 and 8.6.Thats the big one. If the entire zone gives way at once, an event that seismologists call a full-margin rupture, the magnitude will be somewhere between 8.7 and 9.2. That’s the very big one.

Flick your right fingers outward, forcefully, so that your hand flattens back down again. When the next very big earthquake hits, the northwest edge of the continent, from California to Canada and the continental shelf to the Cascades, will drop by as much as six feet and rebound thirty to a hundred feet to the west—losing, within minutes, all the elevation and compression it has gained over centuries. Some of that shift will take place beneath the ocean, displacing a colossal quantity of seawater. (Watch what your fingertips do when you flatten your hand.) The water will surge upward into a huge hill, then promptly collapse. One side will rush west, toward Japan. The other side will rush east, in a seven-hundred-mile liquid wall that will reach the Northwest coast, on average, fifteen minutes after the earthquake begins. By the time the shaking has ceased and the tsunami has receded, the region will be unrecognizable. Kenneth Murphy, who directs FEMA’s Region X, the division responsible for Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska, says, “Our operating assumption is that everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast.”

from dutchsinse:

Renewed activity has again begun to appear across the Pacific, extending across the North American Craton.

A new article is circulating in the Main Stream Media regarind a "mega-quake" which could strike the Pacific Northwest Cascadia subduction zone. Fearmongering talk by the media saying Seattle will be destroyed, and everything West of I-5 from Washington to California would be destroyed.

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/201...

Some media even saying PEOPLE SHOULD MOVE from the West coast (smh + facepalm)!

https://www.facebook.com/ShepardSmith...

Move? Huh? Wow, really? Over reaction beyond measure.. instead of moving.. have an earthquake plan, and know what to do in low lying areas near the ocean!

http://www.dutchsinse.com

These reports (in my opinion) is highly fear laced, and should be decried for being alarmist in the outlandish media suppositions.

People talking about 100-600 foot tall waves, and M9.2 earthquakes along the Cascadia which will devastate the West coast?

While this is a remote possibility, we have a much greater chances of 6.0 - 8.0M earthquakes in the region which will NOT send giant waves to shore, but will cause water / food / power shortages.

______

We have a current forecast threat for 6.0M earthquake activity over the next 7 days to strike between North California and the Axial seamount off the shores of Washington State.

Also on watch, the far SW United States reaching into Baja Mexico -- watching for 4.0M to 5.0M activity over the next 7 days.

New 4.0M movement should begin again at the Oklahoma / Kansas fracking operations.

New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the Southern United States again near Mississippi / Alabama.

New 3.0M to 4.0M activity should hit the far Northeast United States (Southeast Canada) near the Quebec border.

New 4.0M activity should strike at multiple volcanic locations in California, Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, and Utah.

Each location should see a small swarm which makes it stand out compared to single earthquake events elsewhere.

In the West Pacific, watch Central Japan along the Izu Trench, Southward to Okinawa. Watch Fiji to Soloman Island as well.. both areas should see renewed mid 6.0M range earthquakes.

Watch also for new deep earthquakes which could add larger earthquakes into the mix. Currently still just 1 deep earthquake in the past 7 days (as of July 17, 2015 1130am CDT).

Watch the Eastern India border for at least 1 5.0M event, could lead upwards of 6.0M .

Watch West of India at the Afghanistan Tajikistan border for at least one (most likely a swarm) of moderate to large earthquakes (West of Kathmandu).

Europe, Greece should see renewed mid M5.0 to low M6.0 activity.. English Channel should see at least one M3.0 to M4.0 event.. may be along the shores of France instead of the Channel, or could be just a bit North near London.

Central and South America -- be on watch for new developments near the border of Chile + Peru... could be a single larger event in the upper 6.0 range.

All of this should occur in the next 7-9 days from today (7/17/2015). Giving an additional 2 day window in case we see more deep earthquakes in the West Pacific.

http://fukushima-diary.com/2015/07/10-quakes-occurred-at-the-same-epicenter-south-offshore-of-tokyo-within-3-days/ and http://fukushima-diary.com/2015/07/video-jamstec-reported-volcanic-island-in-south-of-tokyo-might-be-the-beginning-of-a-new-rising-continent/

On 7/15/2015, it was announced there is a possibility that the volcanic island in 1,000 km South of Tokyo might be the beginning of a new continent by JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) and Earthquake Res. Inst., Univ. of Tokyo et al.

They pointed out the fact that the usual continental crust consists of andesite and granite, and oceanic crust consists of basalt, however all the magma spewed out from the former volcanic island at the same location was “andesite” 40 years ago. This former volcano is now absorbed by the new volcanic island.

They suggested the hypothesis that the eruption process of this new volcanic island is showing the very moment of a new continent rising.

From the latest report of the Maritime Safety Agency, the new volcanic island is 12 times bigger than the absorbed former volcanic island.

They report that the crater on the top of the volcano stopped erupting but a new crater appeared on the body of the mountain.

The amount of ice and snow that melted from the landmass of Greenland and Antarctica, also from mountains and so on (dried up lakes) means that the pressure did decrease and those landareas are rising. On top of that the permafrost is defrozen and releasing all kind of gasses both under the seafloor as on land. Both movements increase seismic tensions.

Since the de-icing of the poles and Greenland, Northern Canada, Alaska seems to be increasing the rise will increase.

Fracking is changing the upper crust of the earthlayer. When the "normal" seismic activity leads to a major earthquake the chances are that both rising landmass and fracking will make things much worse.

In history one could claim there are several layers; short term, day-to-day, medium term, thousends of years and long term, milions of years. Dutchsinse might be cathing up with the short term earth-activity.  Geologists know the longer term history in some ways. But there might be "slow movement" (amount and distripution of liquids and gasses in the earth/atmosphere) that one might oversee.

Just as we were expecting this week has shown a return of M7.0 earthquake activity, new swarms of M4.0+ earthquakes in the Midwest United States, and new volcanic eruptions in Indonesia.

In the United States, all signs are pointing towards renewed activity along the Pacific Northwest, and far Southwest coast.

Be on watch for craton movement along the "edge" causing new movement in the West (Wyoming Idaho / Yellowstone), as well as the fracking operations of Colorado, and Texas.

We could even see an upper M4.0 to M5.0 strike the midwest near the fracking operations towards the New Madrid Seismic Zone in Missouri / Illinois over the next week.

East coast United States should also be on watch for activity to pick up, possibly "booms" will start to show, as well as a few earthquake swarms in the states which reside upon the "edge" of the craton.

The West Pacific should be on watch near Japan, as well as on watch for new deep earthquakes which could cause larger shallow movement. The areas named in the video are the spots to watch for the compensation movement from the M7.0 activity in Alaska, and Papua New Guinea.

Watch Sumatra North to the border of India (in Asia), and then watch further West in the areas named for the Middle East / South Europe.

EU should be on watch in Switzerland going into North Italy, as well as be on watch along the coast of France into the English channel for renewed M3.0 to M4.0 activity.

Dutchsinse mentions possible M6 North Island New Zealand, M5 southern part South Island. He also notes that Antarctica was between some major movements. I add to that that Antarctica has volcanic activity under seaice, melting it even faster. The South Pole area has seen even more temperature rise than the Arctic. Resulting in movement from land-ice to the sea and decreasing the pressure on the continent of Antarctica (that pressure release will cause seismic "restructering").

Dutchsinse also mentions increase of seismic activity both for Yellowstone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPGl6nPM2Ek and north Sumatra (Lake Toba super volcano is in that area) spreading north (from Sumatra) towards the Himalaya over Bangla Desh. Bangla Desh is defenseless and overpopulated. If Dutchsinse is correct a major event in that area will become a major disaster.

http://arctic-news.blogspot.nl/search/label/earthquakes

It's a well-known phenemenon that, during the northern summer, more earthquakes do hit the Northern Hemisphere, rather than the Southern hemisphere. That's a natural phenomenon, but there can also be ways in which people can contribute to the incidence of earthquakes.

Isostatic rebound and changing stress conditions due to meltwater run-off can trigger seismic events. For months now, a huge amount of seismic activity has hit faultlines along the boundaries of the North American Plate, as earlier discussed in the earlier post Ring of Ice.

Bill McGuire, Emeritus Professor of Earth Sciences at the University College London, recently said the following in post at ClimateState.com:

“There may be a threat of submarine landslides around the margins of Greenland, which are less well explored. Greenland is already uplifting, reducing the pressure on the crust beneath and also on submarine methane hydrates in the sediment around its margins, and increased seismic activity may be apparent within decades as active faults beneath the ice sheet are unloaded. This could provide the potential for the earthquake or methane hydrate destabilisation of submarine sediment, leading to the formation of submarine slides and, perhaps, tsunamis in the North Atlantic.

We see evidence of the Earth ‘waking up’ specifically in relation to seismic activity in areas of Alaska where dramatic ice loss (up to 1km vertical thickness) has occurred over the last 100 years, and also in relation to the correlation in many high mountains terrains of increased landslide occurrence and heatwaves.

There is no unequivocal evidence for a specific volcanic response, unless the high level of recent activity at the Icelandic volcanoes is a reflection of unloading due to melting of the Vatnajokull Ice Cap. Certainly this whole region is uplifting by a few centimetres a year, so such a suggestion would not be completely unreasonable, even if we don’t (yet?) have any hard evidence.”

Particularly dangerous in this respect are earthquakes along the fault that crosses the Arctic Ocean, such as the 4.5 M earthquake indicated by the blue dot on the top map, also indicated on the map below. The danger here is that such earthquakes could destabilize methane hydrates that are highly prominent in sediments under the Arctic Ocean.
As discussed in earlier posts, wild weather swings could also contribute to destabilization of methane hydrates. Furthermore, a study published this year suggests that human-caused groundwater depletion contributed to the prominence of earthquakes in California. Similar suggestions were made in a studyfocusing on a 2011 earthquake in Spain.

[ click on image to enlarge ]
Besides the above wild weather swings, wild weather itself could similarly be destructive. As hurricane Sandy approached the U.S. coast in 2012, the force of waves slamming into other waves shook the seafloor, which was recorded by earthquake sensors. The energy generated by Sandy was similar to small earthquakes between magnitudes 2 and 3, seismologists at the University of Utah estimated.

Did typhoon VongFong cause earthquakes around Japan? The image on the right shows earthquakes that occured around Japan during the seven days up to October 16, 2014. Again, the map doesn't show the smaller quakes, so further studies may be needed to shed more light on this.

A noteworthy rebound of seismic activity is showing across the Pacific plate.

A series of deep earthquakes along the Eastern and Western Pacific has precipitated a new round of shallow larger earthquakes on both sides of the plate, further displacing areas across North America, Central America, Asia, and Europe.

Going forward (over the next 7 days - beginning August 8th), we can expect renewed activity to strike the Southwestern United States. This puts Los Angeles, San Diego, Southern California into the mix for the next 7 days.

Keep watch for noteworthy activity to develop across the Southwestern region, specifically for M5.0 seismic unrest to begin showing along the West Coast of the United States. Could develop as far South as Salton Sea, or as far North as Mono Lake California (Northeast of Los Angeles towards Central California).

States along the edge of the craton also need to be on watch from Northwest Nevada.. Yellowstone (Idaho/Montana/Wyoming).. South along the craton edge spanning the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The Western portion of the craton could see M4.0 earthquake activity strike near the dormant volcanoes shown in the video over the next 7 days.

Renewed M4.0 activity, possibly even greater, should strike Kansas near the Oklahoma Border.

Rumbles and booms should be heard along the East coast (new england) -- and we should see another mid M3.0 to near M4.0 along the Northeast edge of the craton in Quebec or possibly further East in New Brunswick Canada.

Asia should be on watch from Central Japan , South along the Izu trench towards Nishinoshima volcano.. then due West towards Okinawa / Taiwan. Next 7 days - this region should show a noteworthy earthquake above M6.0 but under M7.0 -- based upon the activity in the region currently. The magnitude may go up IF we see new deep earthquakes which are about M5.0 in the next few days (keep watch for new deep events!!)

Further West.. professionals are watching Nepal for possible large activity ABOVE M7.0 -- but they didn't put a time frame on it -- just saying there is still pressure there which will release at some point (their words not mine).

Watch the areas just East and West of Nepal for above M5.0 activity over the next week.

Further West across the Middle East going into South Europe.. keep watch in Iran near the Turkey border for a possible larger earthquake which could cause damage. Possible reaching upwards beyond M5.0.

In Europe. Southwest Greece along the coast should see an upper M5.0 to lower M6.0 reset the activity pushing North since the UK just released the pressure via a M4.2 earthquake off the shores of England.

The Puerto Rican trench now needs to be on watch for a possible larger earthquake South of Cuba reaching Northeast towards Haiti / Dominican Republic. Could reach upwards of a M5.0, and get everyones attention. This larger earthquake should strike the trench West of Puerto Rico.

Watch the South Caribbean just in case.. we saw a rare M6.5 earthquake + Kick 'em Jenny volcano set off alerts over the past 2 weeks in this location North of Venezuela.

Central and South America should be out of the mix for the time being.. if there were to be any large movement -- it would occur along the coat of El Salvador going in to Nicaragua . I didn't name a magnitude in the video, but if an event were to hit, I would expect it to only be in the lower M6.0 range since the cluster of earthquakes already in central America must be releasing some of the building pressure.

Overall this is a huge earthquake forecast. One of my longest , and one covering almost every area on the planet (including Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas).

Have an earthquake plan, and be prepared -- just in case.

http://dutchsinse.com/8152015-another-large-earthquake-in-the-west-pacific-m6-7-strikes-soloman-islands-japan-placed-on-alert/

A large M6.7 earthquake has struck the West Pacific in the Soloman Islands East of Papua New Guinea.

This events marks the THIRD large earthquake to strike the Soloman Islands this week.In addition to seeing the large earthquake activity in the Soloman islands, the other area which was warned in the earthquake forecast  (South Japan) is now under alert / evacuations due to thousands of earthquakes near Sakurajima Volcano, with an impending very large eruption now possible.

The nearby Sendai Nuclear power plant is also under serious warning, locals evacuating, and “massive tectonic deformation” currently taking place (August 15):

Past 24 hours of earthquakes M2.5 and greater in the United States.

Notice anything MISSING?

Get ready just in case, silence after swarming isn't really a "good" thing in my personal opinion.

Hopefully a few smaller events will resume as opposed to a larger event.

The reason I'm showing you this is because it is RARE to see such "silence". In the past, a few times at least, when we see relative silence after heavy movement -- it's a sign of building pressure.

I hope I'm wrong, and this is just a silent day in the midst of multiple seismic storms.

See the most recent earthquake forecast here, calling for West coast activity this week:

I think in some points Dutchsinse is incorrect; building up pressure can be released in many different ways, volcanic, a swarm of quakes and a series of smaller quakes more widespread. But all the ingredients for a "major event" are there. Major earthquakes overdue, melting of landice and release of underlying gasses (methane release as a greenhouse gas is now larger than CO2) in an extreme way. Within 5 years at least a M8.5 will happen "somewere".  The "pacific ring of fire" might be the major candidate for that, but other parts of the world are certainly not safe for such a major event.

http://dutchsinse.com/9052015-major-earthquake-swarm-strikes-atka-volcanic-center-in-alaska-aleutian-islands-volcanic-unrest/

A large earthquake swarm is currently striking Alaska in the Central Aleutian islands near the “Atka Volcanic Center“.

The largest event so far has topped out at M5.7, with dozens of other M4.0 – M5.0 earthquakes all striking near the same location off the shores of Atka island.

The Atka Volcanic Complex consists of multiple volcanoes , including Korovin Volcano, Mount Atka, Mount Sergief, MountKoniuji, and Kasatochi Volcano.

The Aleutian islands extend off the Southern coast of Alaska, reaching West across the Northern Pacific Ocean, bordering the arctic circle.

These islands are known for their past volcanic activity, with a few active volcanoes actually extending out Westward from Alaska towards Kamchatka Russia.

We could very well be observing a volcanic earthquake swarm which is the sign of a coming eruption.  Worthy to note that Atka Volcano hasn’t erupted since 1995.

Any time we see large earthquake swarm activity at a volcanic location along this segment of the North Pacific, we need to watch out for NEW activity to strike the West coast of the United States, and also in the far West Pacific.

Volcanic seismicity in the North Pacific is a sign of greater plate unrest , thus we need to be on watch not only in Alaska at this swarm location (for an eruption OR large earthquake), but also we need to be on watch in adjacent areas several thousand miles away to the Southeast, and Southwest from this location in Alaska.

This North Pacific earthquake swarm now certainly has put the West coast United States, and East coast of Japan in the mix.

This new volcanic swarm comes on the heels of an earthquake which struck near Mount Saint Helens yesterday.  The Mt. St. Helens earthquake which struck a day ago (June 3, 2015) is just another sign of the Pacific plate unrest unfolding before our eyes.

______

Be on watch along the West coast of the United States, and in Japan over the next several days until mid-next week.  I’ll have a new earthquake update up by September 8th – 9th.

The 1964 Alaska M9.3 earthquake (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1964_Alaska_earthquake) had its epicenter near Anchorage. A swarm of quakes most of the time is release of pressure and not a forwarning of a larger event. (But sometimes it is an indication for more to come).

Dutchsinse :Serious movement still occurring off the shores of Chile following the M8.3 earthquake + tsunami.

At least SEVEN different followup aftershocks measuring up to M7.0 !

Just now (1130pm CDT 9/16/2015) another M6.3 struck.

(CNN)Advanced planning and authorities' quick reaction to a powerful 8.3-magnitude minimized the severity of the disaster that struck off the coast of Chile, triggering a nearly 16-foot wave on the shore in Coquimbo Region.

About 1 million people evacuated ahead of the tsunami wave. Authorities said at least eight people died and one person is missing.

The quake hit Wednesday night, with its epicenter 46 kilometers (29 miles) west of Illapel, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbrmQlwNeNg The tsunami after the 8.4 quake took 24 hrs to get to Japan but did not do much damage. Only Chil itself did get a lot of damage. The magnitude does not always tell somethingh about the damage.

On USGS or EMSC you can see a global effect of increased "aftershocks". An earthquake near Papua New Guinea did cause a small tsunami but that did not enlarge the tsunami after the Chili-quake.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2eskc-o848

An 8+ quake is a once per year-event in the statistics. In my opinion this is NOT the major quake that might be on its way. (Statistics for events that happen once in a million years or so you can not trust or work with in the short term. But global warming and therefor the decrease of landice pressure in combination with "normal" seismic activity does make a larger event more likely.  Sator, the world is not ready for the "major events" that are "around the corner").

The tsunami hit NZ but was only 30 cm high (1 foot). We had a few hours of elevated waves but nothing damaging.

This past week proved to be a VERY active one in terms of seismic unrest.

Chile experienced a M8.3 earthquake, and a series of M6.0+ events struck in the West Pacific. Even a M6.0 along the central mid-Atlantic ridge struck this past week.

In addition to the large South and West Pacific earthquake activity, a new M5.5 earthquake struck off the shores of Vancouver Island BC. This new M5.5 event now sets the craton into motion (yet again), and will also most likely lead to a noteworthy earthquake South of Vancouver Island BC (area warned in the video from North California to the Axial Seamount.

Worthy to note the large LAKE DRAINING event that just occurred today (September 25th) in North California at Folsom Lake / Walker Lake: could be a draining event due to fault zone movement...

From Facebook Dutchsinse:

Earthquake Warning:

The past 24 hours of activity in the West Pacific shows a clear progression of M5.0+ earthquakes from the far South Pacific to the far North Pacific.

To see this much movement across a whole segment of the planet (from the South pole to the North Pole) is a worrisome sign for me to see.

This means we need to be on watch in the adjacent "silent" areas for larger movement in the next 7 day.

Add in the new deep M5.2 earthquake in Indonesia which struck in the Asthenosphere below the West Pacific Plate at a depth of 520.0 km (323.1 miles).

The deep earthquake will displace the plate above the epicenter, and cause a larger earthquake in a NEARBY area (most likely to the NW of the deep earthquake).

The earthquake forecast for this week covers several of these areas already. These new developments accentuate the areas already being watched.

The amount of energy needed to move the WHOLE Pacific plate from the South Pole to the North Pole is phenomenal, this progression of M5.0+ events should terminate with a larger earthquake in the next few days.

Be on watch in the areas which are forecast.

As far as earthquakes...oh well hope the house stands and is good!!

I think the prep would be similar to a hit by a nuclear bomb or the last days of Pompeii. Put you head between your knees and kiss... well...

There are a few grim realities for the Preppers out there. One of them is a lot of Executive Orders in place that basically give the government to take your house, your stuff, and put you to work without any consideration to your civil liberties. If your food is not hidden and you have a small arsenal some people will be fighting to keep it, but probably the best bet is to leave the area and learn to survive in the open.

If there is a major volcanic eruption as in Crater Lake in Oregon which rained huge boulders and rocks, not a lot that can be done.   Caves are good but may become pretty valuable and will become combat areas.

As for an earthquake if we get hit with a 10 plus - which is predicted soon for California and Washington and Oregon most houses will tumble.

A bit grim.

Here in NZ we build to a very rigorous building code but even now that it's been beefed up since the latest earthquake swarm, the buildings are still only expected to weather a 9 on the richter scale. And at a 9, they are not expected to remain intact and undamaged, but they are expected to hold together enough for people to survive inside them and then be able to get out afterwards.
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

There were 4M5quakes in the Mid atlantic (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us20003pl3#general_summary) between the caribean and west-Africa.

What I understand is that a M12earthquake would be something like a movement of land over 500 meters in a faultzone of over 10.000 km. What makes it complicated is that no faultzone stands alone, there is always some sort of network that reacts on major movement.

Also the Magnitude can be misleading. The two M9 events in 1960 Chili and 1964 in Alaska did cause
limited loss of life, just like the M8.4 recent Chile quake was not a major human disaster.

Calculations on these kind of movements requiers super-computers and a large amount of data. I do not think that there is enough data available yet.

https://theconversation.com/five-global-catastrophes-that-could-happen-tomorrow-48420 There are many possible major events that need attention. The safe conditions we have seen most of our lifetimes are very abnormal (eventhough in our short memory we take that abnormality as "the normal").

On Lake Toba https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crkMnCUEo3A&feature=youtu.be An eruption at a supervolcano does not have to be a "super-eruption". Some activity could be a vent releasing pressure. But if the email is correct (and there are many other stories about this volcano "heating up") it is a concern.

JPL experts predict a possible 5.0 magnitude quake in Los Angeles, but say it very well could be stronger.

JPL geophysicist Dr. Andrea Donnellan, along with seven other scientists, has been using radar and GPS to measure Southern California’s chances for a sizable earthquake, and has made a sobering hypothesis about another big one.

“When the La Habra earthquake happened, it was relieving some of that stress, and it actually shook some of the upper sediments in the LA basin and moved those a little bit more,” Dr. Donellan said.

However, according to Dr. Donnellan, those strains remain, with enough power to produce an even larger quake in the same epicenter in La Habra.

“There’s enough energy stored to produce about a magnitude 6.1 to 6.3 earthquake,”Dr. Donnellan described.

The new NASA-led analysis of a moderate magnitude 5.1 earthquake that shook Greater Los Angeles in 2014 finds that the earthquake deformed Earth's crust across a broad region encompassing the northern Los Angeles Basin and northern Orange CountyAs Fox LA adds rather ominously,

The shallow ground movements observed from this earthquake likely reflect strain accumulated on deeper faults, which remain locked and may be capable of producing future earthquakes.

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.

As for an earthquake if we get hit with a 10 plus - which is predicted soon for California and Washington and Oregon most houses will tumble.

A bit grim.

Tell me who is predicting a 10+ earthquake for the west coast?   Most reputable geologists think an earthquake in the mid 9s is probably the strongest possible...  An asteroid strike might produce a larger one but there are no known geologic process to account for a 10+ earthquake.   Even with all that said, except for possibly the Cascadia Subduction Zone, it is even doubtful if plate dynamics under the west coast could even produce a 9.0.
