Has anyone already purchased or thought about purchasing their turkey now? We don't know what will happen between now and late November with poultry health and availability. I know that we are all prepping while trying to maintain that sense of everyday normalcy - well , part of the normalcy would be planning pending holiday events. Many of us have started our gift purchases for Christmas, but just wondered if anyone was working on food preps for holiday meals?

Smart idea, never even occured to me to buy turkey now and put in freezer. It would save money just by buying a little bit each week when grocery shopping and putting up with my preps. Thanks so much for the suggestion.

Yep. Already did that one. Only thing is keep in mind you will be paying higher than you usually pay this time of year without the Thanksgiving sales. Which if Turkey means that much to you it is a wise purchase just for the comfort of knowing you will have a somewhat normal meal.

I will have to wait until my freezer empties out some to be able to fit a turkey in there, but will plan on doing that soon.

Yes, here. Same as last year and the one before. I buy two at a time. My simple reason carried forward from hard times; I don't buy a turkey for Thanksgiving unless I can put one back for Christmas.
Good luck to all.

Sooner or later we shall have our last Christmas turkeys. I can't see them being available if/when BF hits. When we can't have it any more I think I shall just accept that. They take an awful lot of room in the freezer that in a pandemic I should prefer tohave filled with other things. Such as more compact meat/bacon, vegetables like peppers that are expensive and difficult to find dried. And cauliflower!

That's funny - I was thinking that exact thing yesterday afternoon.
As for the cost - it probably will cost more now since we'll miss out on the pre-Thanksgiving day sales...unless there are chicken/turkey flocks being culled in Oct/Nov in which case the cost of poultry will be very high - if you would even want to "risk" buying one.

Beth you put it so succinctly!!! Remeber to cook them thoroughly everyone. I read somewhere that H5N1 has been proved to be frozen for 12 months and then on defrosting the live virus was still present! |

THanks for the reminder. I will be purchasing 1-2 turkeys within the next 2 weeks. What size turkeys are you guys going to buy? I was just wondering if the electricity is off we will probably need to eat the turkey pretty quickly. This is not a problem at my house. My husband can eat a 20lb turkey in 2 days.
