Just found out that we have Type A flu confirmed. Now what type H1N1 or whatever they did not know. Have had lots of Stomach virus, pink eye, strep and this is only the first of November.
Put your seat belts on this is going to be a rough winter! I had my flu shot 10-5-13 so I should be ok. But does the flu shot keep you from getting the flu or does it just keep you from getting too sick? |

What we are told is that it can do both depending on how closely the vacine matches the strain.

When we had the flu a couple of months ago, it swept through our region and was A H1N1 or A H3N2. In the newspaper they reported that people who had had the flu shot were 70% protected if they had no underlying health issues, and 50% protected if they had other issues.
As I mentioned at the time, friends of ours had the flu shot in Spring, and 2 of the 3 of them came down with the full flu and were ill for weeks. Both the strains of flu are included in our flu shots here.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

The 2012-2013 flu vaccine was only 17% effective. Unless the 2013-2014 vaccine is well matched to circulating strains it may not be of significant benefit for the risks involved. Risks? Well, unless you got the Thimerisol free, why would you let anyone inject mercury into your bloodstream?
The elderly are the people who need to be protected the most because healthy adults can fight the flu, although quite uncomfortable. However the University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease studied 12,000 publications going back to the 1930's and found that the flu vaccine offers little protection for seniors. If there is no benefit to seniors, then why would they let someone inject mercury into their bloodstream? Mercury is a neurotoxin in that it interferes with the electrical activities of the nerves.
I don't think that anybody knows the long term effects yet of having mercury, formaldehyde, and aluminum injected into their bloodstreams. Getting a flu shot is a trade off between the unknown long term effects and being uncomfortable for a few days.
If you want to prevent the flu, then cut out the sugar, eat a balanced diet, get plenty of sleep, and wash your hands! And you don't need to use anti-bacterial soaps either.

My friend has been pretty sick too,and has had a strong deep cough for the past three weeks, off and on fever and chills, aches and pains and was coughing to the point of actually vomiting, and she just now decided to go get a check up at our student health centre. As soon as she came in and told the check in people what was going on, they put her straight in the check-up room and made her wear a mask.
@FluMom, I had that stomach virus around the middle of September. Got it after eating at a buffet, both of my friends and I got sick and then we got our families sick. It hit so fast, like I ended up feeling it like 18 hours afterwards, and it was a domino effect with my family. A lot of my friends in Northern CA got sick from it. |

Do they know what it is yet? I've had a pretty bad cough for about two weeks now, no fever or chills though. |

Not sure just yet, waiting for her to follow up with me. Yeah when I asked her about the fevers, she said it didn't start out with the fever and chills but that it occurs randomly, and then it goes away. Update: They prescribed her antibiotics because they think it started out as the flu, but progressed into possibly bronchitis or pneumonia. |

One of my hometown friends, who recently moved to San Diego, has the flu now too. Yesterday night, he ended up on the ER with a meningitis scare and was kept for observation. :/

Definitely, another one of my friend's asthma got worse while getting over the flu, this week. She ended up needing a couple of breathing treatments. |
