Swine flu warning: Deadly virus cases SURGE in UK - symptoms you must know about

SWINE FLU is a deadly virus that infected more than 10,000 people in 2009, spanning 74 countries. Now, the virus has reached the UK and the number of infections has reached a flu-season high. These are the most common swine flu symptoms and signs you must know about - and they could be easily mistaken for something less serious.

Swine flu is caused by a strain of viruses, known as the H1N1 flu virus, said the NHS. Its scientific name is Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09. It’s similar to normal, more common flu, but symptoms tend to be more severe, and it could be deadly. A swine flu epidemic was first declared in June 2009, after the virus was first spotted in Mexico. The pandemic, which reached in the UK in April 2009, subsequently killed 457 people. Now, the amount of swine flu cases in England has reached a flu-season high for this year, it’s been revealed

The number of people hospitalised from swine flu between January 20 and January 27 - the latest figures - was 210, according to Public Health England (PHE).

That’s the highest amount of H1N1 hospitalisations since the start of the flu season, at the start of October 2018.

The second highest amount of recorded hospitalisations was 185, from the previous week.

Sixty-nine of the latest swine flu patients were subsequently admitted to an intensive care unit, added PHE.

Since the start of this year’s flu season, 953 people have been admitted to hospital with swine flu in England.

PHE’s Head of Flu, Richard Pebody, said: “Flu continues to circulate although there are early signs that activity is peaking.

“To prevent the spread of flu, it is important to practice good respiratory and hand hygiene and to avoid close contact with others if you have flu symptoms.”

Swine flu symptoms appear similar to those of ‘normal’ flu, but they can be more severe, warned Jakemans pharmacist, Marvin Munzu.

That’s because the virus infects deeper into the lungs than normal flu, he said.

Common swine flu symptoms include a cough, sore throat, watery eyes, headaches, fatigue, and nausea.
