Croup is a collection of symptoms, rather than a single disease.  It can be caused by a number of respiratory infections.  Since the vaccine for diptheria was introduced, it is very, very rarely fatal.

Croup outbreak striking children down with barking cough - what you need to know

Parents are urged to be vigilant for signs of croup - a condition that affects the windpipe, the airways to the lungs, and the voice box

Parents have been warned to be wary after an increasing number of children are being struck down by a “barking cough”.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said it was reporting an increase in cases of croup and are urging parents to be vigilant.

Croup is a childhood condition that affects the windpipe, the airways to the lungs, and the voice box, Walesonline reports .

Youngsters are said to develop a distinctive cough and will make a harsh sound, known as stridor, when they breathe in.

In severe cases, they may need to visit their nearest A&E department if they find it hard to breathe.
