What is going oun with West Nile Virus? Are we  in the middle of an epidemic in the U.S. and no one is saying anything?

35 cases with one death.  It's actually a pretty quite WNV season.

People are starting to get the message = avoid mosquitos this time of year.  Health authorities are getting more aggressive on mosquito control as well.

Illinois has had very cool summer weather, and our WNV activity is reduced from years past.  All is OK, no epidemic, it is just "in the ecosystem" as I like to point out.

I agree, Chuck - it's another bug that we have to learn to live with. If nothing else, maybe now people will pay attention to the advice that vector control agencies have been giving them for years about dealing with mosquitoes on their property.
It popped up here in San Diego a couple of years ago, and instantly freaked everyone out. I found a dead crow right outside the front door of the clinic I worked at about the time it was locally identified, and called the environmental health department. I was pleasantly surprised by how seriously they took it, and they arrived in 30 minutes and took it away. I never heard anything back from them, but it was the healthiest looking dead bird I've ever seen. It was lying uninjured on the ground with wings outstretched as if it had dropped dead in mid flight.
WNV is usually relatively benign, but it can cause serious neurological problems in a very small percentage of cases. Wear your bug spray and throw out those old tires in the back yard Thumbs Up
