Have you gotten your answers yet?

Mylar bags are usually used with plastic buckets (since plastic doesn't rust) to store foods long-term. Usually oxygen absorbers are used with them to take out the oxygen that causes foods to get stale or spoil.

The mylar lines the bucket, and you fill the bag, add the oxygen absorber, then quickly seal the mylar with an iron. Pop the lid on and store.

Walton Foods has a really great description of the process, with directions.
