I'm in the process of writing up a last minute shopping list in case H7N9 becomes a pandemic. I haven't got very far with it and would like to know what everyone else is stocking up on at the last minute.

My list is really for perishables, not general long term supplies.

So far I've listed
Fruit
Veg
Potatoes (about 100kg)
Green bananas
chicken food
dog food
cat food

What's on your last minute list?

My short list would be:
Cat food (2- 16-22lbs bags) That's all I can carry by pushcart not having a car,
Frozen veg/fruit,
Another little bit of meat to freeze,
Some more first aid things, and some more ibuprophen.

water
Can't think of other things atm

We went to Back Bay on Basswood in Minnesota's Boundary Waters for a week so I'm replacing MRE's and stocking up on flour, yeast, sugar, salt, baking soda and baking powder. Black powder season is coming up so I've plugged in the venison freezer and buying freezer paper and zip lock bags.

Fill my 12/2.5 gal gas cans, bleach, beans and rice for neighbors, TP (can never have enough), yeast, and anything else that looks needed.

Thanks for the reminder, Flumom and Arirish. I need more yeast, lol I have flour, salt, baking powder,  baking soda and sugar up the wazoo though. maybe I should get some evaporated milk too. I'm lactose intolerant, but in baking, the milk doesn't bother me.

good point with yeast. I opened my last big tub of yeast this week and made a pannetone, but it didn't rise at all. The date on the tub expired Jan 2010 !!!! and I do rotate stock. I guess this one slipped through. I have since stocked up.

Instant coffee has a long past sell by shelf life too since its freeze dried. I have a big jar of that and some non dairy powder creamer. that's more of a comfort food (drink?) idk lol

I freeze all of my yeast. Great way to keep it for a longer time. Good point guys!

  • Lots of hand sanitizer & wipes - you don't want to waste valuable water on washing hands after every little BR visit!  
  • NSAID like Tylenol, Aspirin etc.  Very long shelf lives, don't worry about expiration dates. 
  • First aid supplies - I recommend 3M Transpore tape, bottles of Betadine, sterile gauze.  Sanitary stuff for the ladies!  
  • Essential drugs - it is a pain to get the Rx out of doctors, I wish I knew a prepper MD!  
  • Tooth sanitation supplies - floss etc.
  • Fresh batteries - lithium are best
  • .223 ammo, as much as I can afford on any given day!  
We'll be OK, folks.  Watch for H7N9 in the next 2 months.  Does anyone remember how quickly H1N1 swine flu developed?

Just picked up a quart jar of honey.... Real honey not the walmart stuff. They say 3/4 of honey is fake now. Also I never had a jar of honey go bad on me, wonder what the shelf life is.

Shelf life is forever!!!We have 6lbs of honey stored...Looking forward for deer Season..Need some more Venison for the freezer.

Alive, I keep bees and have buckets of honey. To keep honey forever, you need to be sure it's been creamed (no additives are used to do this, honey has a memory and adapts itself to match the particle size of the starter you use).  Creamed honey will remain as it is forever. If it's not creamed, then all honey will crystallize and become hard and then in order to use it you will have to melt it. 

If you heat your raw honey to dissolve the crystals then you'll kill the enzymes and so it won't be as healthy. creamed honey is still raw, and in my opinion, really good for you.

Back in the early 20th century, a group of archeologists broke into a tomb in Egypt and found a row of large earthen ware jars. They opened one and discovered honey. It was still liquid (so must have been creamed), and the whole party dipped their fingers in and ate some. Then they did it again, and on one of their fingers appeared a black hair. So they tipped out the jar to find out why there were hairs in it and out came a preserved baby!!!!

Honey is an excellent preserver!

Not relevant to this topic but today I'm off to buy a shed load of fireworks. You can only buy fireworks between 2nd and 5th of Nov in New Zealand so I'm off to stock up for the year.

Arirish, if you mean Nov 5th, Bonfire night, yes we do. The trouble is that Nov is in late Spring and it's not dark until after 9pm so bonfires and fireworks look pretty pathetic in daylight. Also we're about to go into the fire ban season when no fires can be lit outside due to bush fire risk.

In our house I secretly (because if my family knew the temptation would prove too much) stock up on fireworks, and then in July when its mid winter, cold and frosty, we have a bonfire party and invite friends. Our land is 10 acres and we look out onto the Southern Alps which at that time of year are covered in snow. We build a giant bonfire and my husband sets up his pyrotechnic extravaganza - as he likes to call it! 

I cook jacket potatoes and chilli, make tonnes of mulled wine and then our friends arrive after dark with their children. I've bought over 300 sparklers for next years one. We set up a tiny charcoal bbq for the children to roast marshmallows and we all sit around on haybales. It's a great evening. 

The aim is to pick a cold clear frosty night so our backs are freezing and our fronts are too hot from the fire. Since we live in the middle of nowhere we have no light pollution and so have millions of stars. A pint or two of mulled wine (and I put home made brandy in ours), some good company and a bonfire is pretty special. I look forward to it all year.

We did go the 1999 New Years Celebration in Sydney Australia (before children arrived) and their fireworks from the harbour bridge were incredible. But it was midnight and warm and balmy with lovely clear skies.

KiwiMum- We have the same problem on our Independence day, July 4th. It's hot and dry and doesn't get dark until 9:00 so unless it rains on the 3rd we save ours for New Years eve.

Does anyone no what the best temperature is to keep live yeast alive?

Bonfire night - since I moved to the States, I haven't had a chance to celebrate that one. And fireworks are banned in California anyway (outside of organized displays and lots of paperwork) so I guess it's not going to happen Unhappy

They aren't banned in all of CA, but you can only really use them for the 4th of july weekend. I've noticed that down here in Southern CA (I'm from Northern, almost every city bans personal firework use.) We do bonfires all summer long up north lol
