i think we need a topic about why u should prep. Alot of ppl dont realize the problems that could result from the flu- not just the flu itself. Im not good at convincing ppl on why the power may go out or what the economy could do so hlp plz, could the water really get shut off?? maybe it could go in the priority prep room. I was also wondering if people feel the water supply will get turned
off. I was going to buy a reverse osmosis purifier to put under
the kitchen sink to use, but it would require running water to use it

Hi. Well one resason I am is because of panic buying when this hits. Everyday things will go bye bye qiuckly. In Fl as a hurricaine approaches you should see the mist idiotic stuff vanish in about 4 hours. -K

it would really suck if the power went out just in your neigborhood and there was no one around to fix it... that tiny problem which is usually fixed in hours would get fixed at all!

There may be periods when the quality of water is questionable. I've been in a few water purfication facilities. I'm no expert, but my understanding is that, these facilities are fully automated, but require human oversite. In my neck of the woods, the water quality is checked every several hours with human oversight, adjustments if required are made. Critical times are during the Spring run-off from farmers fields. The larger facilities have more bench strength. But if you live in a smaller community near factory-farms, you might not have the benefit of computers. In Walkerton Ontario, the quality of the water was in the care of two brothers, who were untrained, and had daily conversations with Johnny Walker. They were the byproducts of government cutbacks, and nepotism, not unlike F.E.M.A. I was in the town of Walkerton Ontario, the day the largest E.Coli tainted-water tragedy happened in North America, May, 2000. Over 2,000 were critically ill, and half-a-dozen died. The survivors continue to suffer long-term health problems (kidney, etc, etc.) I've met a few who are still seeking satisfaction through the courts. Bottom line, use filteration or be prepared to boil your water. Also buy a rain barrel if it is applicable in your circumstance. (The 2 brothers got a slap on the wrist) http:// www.canoe.ca/EcoliTragedy/home.html * Recently it was discovered to the surprize of the federal government that for the past two-years, half the First Nations People (aboriginal) living on reservations, were under a "boil water" advisory. You could call it Cananda's version of Katrina. Edited by Rick |

In Ohio's flu plan the very last words are: Ohio Department of Health Bureau of Infectious Disease Control Immunization Program September 2005 People should plan ahead and think about what they need to have in their house in case someone in their household were to become infected with influenza and need to receive care at home. If you live alone, are a single parent of young children, or are sole caregiver for a frail or disabled adult, it would be a good idea to have some items stored in your home in case of illness: · Have enough fluids (e.g. water, juice, soup) available to last for 1-2 weeks. · Have enough basic household items (e.g. tissues) to last for 1-2 weeks.· Have acetaminophen and a thermometer in the medicine cabinet. Do you know how to use/read a thermometer correctly? If not, ask someone to show you how.· Think of someone you could call upon for help if you became very ill with the flu and discuss this possibility with him or her.· Think of someone you could call upon to care for your children if you were required to work and their school or day care was closed because of the influenza pandemic; discuss the possibility with them.
Sounds like we should be ready to take care of ourselves for two weeks. Five or six weeks is more like it. |

MY NUMBER ONE PREP REASON..........PEACE OF MIND Prepping and storing gives me a peace of mind..it is a feeling that one can still be in control of theirs and families lifes, should the world spin out of control... Everyday we face any number of disaters...and being ready for anything makes one(especially me) feel better..even if it came down to the proverbal the check is in the mail..I would be ok for about a week, from preps...that is a normal weeks worth of food, but should disater strike I have enough put away for a longer time... |

I'm more scared of the ppl who dont prep than the flu itself- they'll be panicky, fighting for what ever they can get, angry at the government...
