The WHO has admitted that the avian flu presence will be in the U.S in 6-12 months...possibly sooner. They are recognizing that a pandemic is now probable.Check your news listings for the whole story. The bird flu has also been found in a Martin (weasel like creature) in germany. Just shows that the virus is crossing into species rapidly.

Traditionally, outbreaks of influenza occur in april, with a subsequent and often more severe outbreak of the illness in october.

Wow. I missed that it was in a martin in Europe.
I thought that I was doing pretty well with preps, but now that it seems closer, there's a seemingly never ending list of things popping up that should be bought, prepared, etc. |

The "big guys" are coming out with their predictions...Mike Chertoff, Homeland Security Chief gives it 6 months and David Nabarro 6 to 12 months. The front page of our local newspaper headlines read, "Spring Fever Could Bring Avian Flu to U.S. in 6 months". Seeing more and more news creeping out but there important stuff 'LIKE PEOPLE DYING' isn't. |

The goverment of Finland(where i live) said that it's only matter of few weeks here, but they said they are well prepared and they had some sort of practise today.
I'm not too scared yet. Just waiting. |

IF you read Dr. Nabarro's prediction, he also stated that it could be sooner, as he said he has been wrong before. Seems like he is leaving a window open for the unexpected.....

Just bear in mind that for 99% of people, life goes on as normal in all the countries where bird flu is already present. You wont necessarily see huge numbers of dead birds & other animals or humans.

Remember also that Birdflu in the birds here in the US in 6-12 months, is
NOT the same as the birdflu in humans here in the US in 6-12 months. That said, it would be ironic if the H2H hit hard & fast in China or Africa, in the next 2-3 months, and then spread to humans here before it was in the birds here. |

Haven't heard a lot from China or Viet Nam lately. Didn't hear nearly as much as I would have liked from Turkey. Some very interesting rumors there. I would very much like to know all you have from Turkey. Mahalo for your Kokua.

Article discussion forums I just looked at what people are saying in these "discuss" sections following some of the avian flu articles. It's shocking that so many think it's a hoax or effort to make pharmaceutical companies wealthier. After looking at the posts from 2 current articles, I didn't see any that indicated concern about this being a genuine threat. Plenty of jokes and many politcal and conspiracy theories, but no real concern over the prospect of a genuine pandemic. I get the feeling that the majority of these posters are very young, but it's still alarming to see such a lack of concern. |

On the news last night(and sorry I could not re-watch) to tired at 11...anyways i caught alot of it on the 6p.m news here in Canada....just saying that it was coming and that expect it to be H2H within the next 6 months..now weather on not that was news error..I will watch again today and see what they say...but it is all over our news now in Canada..they were suppose to say something last night at 6 about how far down on the list are children for the vaccine and they never did show it I really don,t think the kids will be in the top 10...So I still plan on keeping mine home through all of this...I really pray that my oldest realizes what going on and gets back up here as soon as TSHT....
THIS little blurb is just to say that they are starting to get really serious about this coming to Canada and the USA..they are predicting about 6 more months...phewwwww I can finish up some more preps..with not knowing the amount of time we will need to stay in, I want to have as much on hand as possible... If they are right this will hit around Sept..hopefully the kids will NOT be back in school.... |

oknut - this is the kind of response you get when our gov't cries 'wolf' too many times (usually right before election time) in order to get people to vote this way or that. Now that the 'real wolf' is coming noone bothers to pay attention. 'Party on Dude!' is all that young people seem to care about. Look at all the news stations on TV. What kind of advertising is there - It's all geared to the chronologically challanged. Ensure, BM products, etc. It's very obvious there hardly any young people watching any current news. What a surprise when 'Hey dude! Parties over'- There's going to be a lot of disillusioned and angry young partiers wondering 'What happened man?-Where'd the party go?'

Has the government issued any planning pamphlets or have they discussed the amounts/types of food/items to stockpile?? |

Not to my knowledge. More on the local news about BF but still no wide spread planning from this state, or information about preparing and what to get.

It seems likely that many of you prepping have the same wierd feeling when standing in the checkout line with a mountain of goods that just scream "STOCKPILE!" Its like "wait, nobody else here is worried about this?"
I was at costco this morning heaping on bags of uncle bens and cans of vegetables, and it just feels sort of dreamlike. Everyone is just going about their usual business, and I'm there imagining what that place is going to look like when the goverment (national or local) actually (if they ever) comes out and says: "You need LOTS of supplies!" I'll be glad not to be in that mess. On a side note, Costco has crank powered flashlights 2/$20 and what looked like deals on those solar powered outdoor lights people have been mentioning. |

I believe that you are correct. I feel that we need to get finished very soon. I took my children to the doctor today to get Pneumonia Vaccine. The nurse asked me if there was a particular reason that I wanted them to have this vaccine and I said YES, there is a particular reason. I didn't want to explain further but she asked what that reason was.. So, I told her. Bird Flu. You should have seen her face...and the face of the patient who over heard me. The nurse's jaw hit the floor. The patients eyes got really big. Later, I explained that I had been doing a lot of research on the subject and it is coming. She said that they hadn't received any information about it, medically, regarding the threat. I am not surprised. Perhaps they will do some research on their own now. She said that they don't normally give the vaccine to kids (teenagers). I told her to expect that to change. That I expect more people will be coming in to ask for it. Including me. I made an appointment for myself too. She told us that we should also get the flu vaccine even though it doesn't work on this particular flu..it could help. I am not sure about that. Can anyone tell me if that is true? Or should we not worry about it? Thanks for listening. Take care. Peace. |

imo, get the flu shot. it wont help with b/f, but you dont want to be in a weak condition just getting over normal flu, and then be hit by b/f.
