Thanks to crofsblog for bringing this to my attention:

'...The doctors want to see a network of rapid-response laboratories set
up based on US Naval Medical Research Units (NAMRUs), which were put
in place after WWII to protect American service men and women from
infectious diseases overseas...' and '...But only a few such labs still
operate, with many - such as those in Panama, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Congo,
Uganda, Ethiopia and Malaysia closing...'

I beleive the one in Indonesia closed down in December 2005. Not good
timing.

I cant get the original link to work but you can read more at:
http://www.crofsblogs.typepad.com/h5n1/ and scroll down.

It seems the best way to research and react 'on the ground', to have these
types of labs available in strategic regions. This sort of thing ought to be
happening now and scientists should not be squabbling over who got the
news out first. Nobel prizes are not a lot of good for a dead scientist.

Cheers Storm but can they detect outbreaks, reseach cures, etc. And, is
being in 50 state adequate when the outbreaks of H2H are likely to occur in
Indonesia, etc. not New York.

The US Navy still has this capability, it's called the Naval Environmental Health Command. The Army does too, it's called US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease. These organizations have tremendous research capabilities. These organizations are closely aligned with CDC regarding epidemiological issues.

Yikes,

What if there is an outbreak in 5, 50 or 500 cities at the same time.

Recall the "heck of a job" that was done in New Orleans.

Back to these closures in far off places. If they are not on the ground by the
time BF is H2H in US it's too late! They would just be subject to the same
mystic mist as the rest of us and probably ordered to barracks on national
security grounds. Dont put your faith in the govt.
