I recently went to my Doctor for a annual physical.  I asked about Bird Flu and if he would give me TAMIFLU for use by myself and other family members.  He stated that with the Government and States buying up all they could find that I would have a hard time finding any.  They would need to test me to see if it was the Flu before giving me TAMIFLU.

That afternoon I was in a Major brand Drug Store and asked if they carried TAMIFLU as a prescription drug.  Their answer was NO, that all amounts are held by the State and Federal Government.  They stated if I had the Flu and was prescribed TAMIFLU then they would be able to have it delivered with 48 hours. 48 hours is too late and too little.  It needs to be taken within 12/24 hours to have effect according to the CDC. Cost $128.95 for 10  30mg tabs. (Enought for one person)

So what to do?  I did some research and found a drug that you can buy over the counter at a vary reasonable price.  What is it?    ELDERBERRY'S.

**"...Two randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind studies demonstrated the elderberry extract, Sambucol, effectively inhibited both influenza A and B strains when given orally to patients in the first 48 hours of influenza symptoms..".

The results of the study are:  "...In the earlier study, 27 individuals experiencing typical early flu symptoms were given Sambucol or placebo daily for three days—2 tablespoons (children) or four tablespoons (adults). Patients were followed for six days and symptoms monitored. Serum from all subjects was analyzed for antibodies to influenza A and B at the initial dose and during the convalescent phase. In the treatment group, significant improvement in flu symptoms was observed in 93.3 percent of subjects within two days after initial dosing, while 91.7 percent of the control group demonstrated improvement after six days..."

It may not be as effective as TAMIFLU, but it can be found now in your health food stores.  I plan on buying enough to start my family on it as soon as Bird flu starts  to spread and continuing for 12 weeks.

** Quotes are taken from another WEB site involved in H5N1 research.

Does anyone else have information about drugs that MAY eliminate or replace TAMIFLU?  or other ideas?

Richard-FL, You may want to see another doctor. There is no Tamiflu shortage.
Quite the contrary, Roche reports that Tamiflu sales fell 64% in the last year.

I called my local big-box pharmacy and they have plenty.

Here is Tamiflu information from Roche:

Here is a recent statement from Roche regarding the FDA Pediatric
Advisory Committee regarding neuropsychiatric events in kids taking
the medication:

Here is Roche's Tamiflu website:

Avoid experimental medications of any kind.
FDA Approved is a good sign of quality.
Avoiding online pharmacies may help you avoid injury or worse.

Richard-Fl, don't ask just go in like it is a regular script and leave it to be filled.   Let them tell you not then go to another store.

I had no problem in January filling my scripts.

Never go in and ask... just do it!
