Maybe they have watched too many zombie films and feel that the collapse is not fast enough.    

ps. I have escaped that fate as the wife would not want to watch any zombie films and we tended to watch things together


More seriously, I think that in practice the Political View has displaced God in their thoughts as the ultimate source of 'infallible truth'.  Many of them would still believe in God but in practice that is second place to the political view.   So  "My personal freedom" takes a higher place than "Love your Neighbour as yourself".  Thus any one supporting another view point is practicing blasphemy.
