I would have posted this in news, except it's only substantiated by two FB buddies in different parts of England.

Both had their grocery orders cancelled.  The reason was low stock and too many delivery orders.

Thank you Witchy.

I shop at Asda quite a bit and use their home delivery service now I am SIP.  I was not going to bother to place an order next week (which I have to do early to avoid high delivery charges) as I am well stocked.  But now I will try in case they cancell orders next month.  This will help me stay ahead.

Thank you!  Forewarned is forearmed.

I can't get grocery deliveries here. I asked my local supermarket as I often see their staff walking around with a trolley and a clipboard so I assumed they did online shopping. It turns out they don't. I can phone up, read out my grocery list to a lady on the phone who will write it down on her clipboard. Then she'll go and get it together, put it in a banana box and then I have to drive there, go in, pay, and take it out to my car. It's not exactly high tech. lol.

I just talked to my father who resides in New Milton. He says he's had no trouble getting deliveries so far. It sounded like he shops at Tedesco? Anyway, he thinks the panic is overblown and in 3-4 months the DOW will be close to 30,000. I hope he's right.

Hi Pandemic.  We are doing early mornings like 7.30am.  Reason for this is research put on another link suggests it can stay in  air dust for 3hrs.

Thought early mornings (7am) more settled dust as our local sends stock filling staff home at midnight. We got stock so we keep to a few things and self checkout.

Maybe wrong. Maybe when they start air con in morning dust worst.  No idea guessing all this.

Cant believe it has actually come to this.

Anyone else have their tips for shopping. Would really appreciate.

I'm with Pandemic on late night shopping. Over here there have been queues of people thinking they'll beat the rush and get in early and they've been queueing before the shop's even open. Our shop shuts at 10pm and I've driven past at 9pm and it's been practically deserted. So I think I'll try a 9.30pm shop and see what it's like. Our local shop doesn't restock overnight, but does it regularly throughout the day, so there's no stock benefit to going first thing except for getting fresh bread. They stop baking it at about 4pm.

But I have just thought of a way round the bread problem. You can order bread at a supermarket. So you could order up the bread you want and they always ask you what time you'll be picking it up, so just after work about 9pm, and then pick up your order from the bakery counter. That would work really well for me.

I know. I make bread all the time, but sometimes it's just easier to buy. I'm also putting off opening my new sack of flour until we are full time SIP. Silly, I know, but I can't get a replacement.

The radio was saying this morning that people are queuing at some supermarkets. Not sure I can deal with that. Having said that, panic buying will have the herds stomping. I'm feeling reassured that in UK, the government will introduce emergency rationing if necessary. I feel more comfortable under the cover of darkness as long as I'm not mugged for my flour and butter.

I have a great bread recipe if you're interested. So much tastier when home made.

I didn't think about dust. I thought confined means small spaces!!?

I am not a morning person at all, and I cant cook very well. When this began to look iffy last month, I took the cheats way and went to Argos and bought a breadmaker. If local shop is out of bread flour you can blame me.  Made bread yesterday bit heavy, well very heavy, but will do....and if anyone comes near my stores I can probably use my bread as a cosh. One wack and it's the long sleep.

I've never used or had bread from a breadmaker, but I can tell you homemade bread is denser and more substantial than the fluff they sell in the supermarket.  Next time, use 1/4 cup less flour than the breadmaker recipe calls for.  If that's too dense, try 1/2 cup less.  Weather and humidity does factor into how much flour one uses.  The more humid it is, the more flour you'll use.  May be why I never went with a breadmaker.  I'll stick with my MixMaster so I can gauge how much flour to use.

Hazlepad, Breadmakers always make tough bread.  Here is how to change that.

#1, Flour!   Bread flour is strong ie it has a lot of glutein.  Ordinary flour has less and so traps less gas from the yeast and is denser.  If you are using ordinary flour, or flour with some cornflour added (for a lighter still loaf) You need to kneed it TWICE for 10 minutes or more each time.  Unless your breadmaker has more computer parts than NASA it can't do this. So set the breadmaker to kneed only and run it twice. Then prove it in the breadmaker and bake it in the oven.  (This lets you take out the paddle too.)

#2. Additives. Commercial breadmakers use several tricks to avoid having to do this. They add things to increase the glutination: xanthan gum, soya flour,  milk, buttermilk, whey, unpronouncable chemicals or even yoghurt.  If you have whey it gives an amazingly good flavour to the bread. So the next time the milk curdles, use the curds to cook (great cheese) and stick the whey in the breadmaker.  You may find: "Oh sh1t the milk curdled!" becomes: "Oh great more whey!"

#3, Violence!  You can't make good bread without kneeding it and knocking it back repeatedly!  The more you bash the cr*p out of it the better your bread will be.  IT IS HARD WORK!  Recipes tell you the dough is ready when it no longer sticks to things, that only means it is ready for the final kneed.

No one makes good bread first time.  NO ONE!   It takes practice and hard work.  The softer the flour the softer the bread but also the more you have to kneed and knock it back.  Take the work out, use the breadmaker, but use the kneed/dough option at least twice.

Oh and if you want to wake up to fresh bread, Let it prove overnight in an exceptionally large tin (it goes on growing!) in a cold oven in a warm kitchen and set the oven timer to come on in time for breakfast. Cover it with damp baking parchment instead of a damp cloth, or a silicon baking sheet.  If you stick a small pot of water in the oven on the bottom It helps the bread go fluffy too.  If you can't get this right (as it does leave out the final knocking back), part bake it the night before and finish the job on the oven's timer in the morning.

You are a smart girl!  You can do it.

I'm all for bashing the *$^* out of something!

What Techno said is true.  NO ONE makes a good loaf the first time.  Heck, my first efforts way back when were somewhere between a doorstop and a cannonball.

The first time I made bread in my bread machine... it came out about 4" square. It was pitiful! I had to throw it out.. Next time I added an egg,  milk and a little more yeast. After a few loaves and more tinkering it became edible.  I probably was using the wrong kind of flour. And if so, I just bought the same kind of flour again. LOL..  If it turns into a big hockey puck again I'll give it to the neighbors dog. He can have fun gnawing on it all day.

Thanks for the advice.  Had the kids taste my bread and they sat there like Bulldogs chewing wasps, asking why they couldn't go to Domino's pizza.

Having read all the tips and tricks I am going to try it again.  I will let you know if I survive.
