"New" being the G614 strain, which is the current dominant strain of COVID in the world. New to Vietnam that is.

They were supposed to be doing well.....!!!!

What went wrong.....?

Or were they lying all along......?

Mmmm the later.....methinks.....

Well, the "first new case" had not been out of the city, and they traced over 100 of his contacts without finding Corvid-19.....but then three others in the city were also infected.....

....so yes, it looks as if it has been silently spreading.  We can guess on the reasons for the "silence", but it could well, in part, be to protect the image that the country was doing very well in battling the outbreak.

Asia coronavirus warning: New strain of virus sparks panic – ‘it’s more contagious’ | World | News

38

Vietnam’s Government has warned the entire country is at risk of a widespread coronavirus outbreak as it gathers data from the city Da Nang. Sky News’ Adam Boulton spoke to their Asia correspondent Tom Cheshire about the crisis set to grip the country. Mr Cheshire said: “This looks like it could be the most serious phase for Vietnam.

“Vietnam was very successful in the initial phase of coronavirus especially as it is right next to China.

“It acted very quickly as it shut its borders, set up its test and trace system and had lots of quarantine as well.

“Over the weekend there were only three cases of COVID-19 confirmed in Da Nang which is a tourist town in the middle of the country.

“But they still said they would evacuate 80,000 people over four days and the town is now going into semi-lockdown.

“All non-essential services are being told to close and to socially distance.”

The Asia correspondent went into detail of why the Vietnamese Government is taking this issue so seriously.

He said: “They are very worried about this becoming a proper outbreak.

“The health minister has said it is a strain of coronavirus they haven’t seen previously in Vietnam.

Mr Cheshire closed by highlighting the difficulties surrounding importing coronavirus from other countries once lockdowns have been lifted.

He said: “Authorities here in China are saying that coronavirus was imported from Europe.

“Although it started in Beijing it seems to be under control now as we haven’t had cases for a long time now.

“This is a global pandemic and as long as it remains a global pandemic the chance of reimporting coronavirus is going to be high.”
