Our Walmart had Rayovac D batteries on sale for 94 cents for 4 (C as well, but I needed only D), so I thought good for our lanterns etc.

Does anyone know if there is a big difference between these and the Duracell/ Energizer etc. batteries? Is it only because of the brand name, or are the Duracell/Energizer etc. genuinely better and do they last longer?

I don't want to buy these thinking I have batteries, only to have them run out quickly. Has anybody used both and noticed a difference? TIA

Hi Grace,

Several years ago Consumer Reports tested the different batteries and there was about a 10% difference (in how long they lasted)  between the top of the line Duracell's and the no name batteries from the discount store.

I've not researched it recently -- but I now buy the super cheapo batteries.  My favorite brand is from IKEA  (the furniture store folks).

Regular heavy duty batteries are a waste of money, unless you only use your "whatever" now and then.
A good place to check on runtime is here http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=64660

I buy the cheapo's as well. A little less run time, but a hell of a lot cheaper. I bought most of mine either at the dollar store or at Big Lots for $.88. Working on my second shoebox full.

Thanks for the replies all! I did buy the Rayovacs. I decided to have some variety (also Costco's Kirklands).

Mountainwinds, thanks for the great link. Some is a little above my head, but I saved it in my favorites to read more later.
