00 Birds Die in Brazil. Country on Alert for Bird Flu.

Written by Norma Nery
Friday, 03 March 2006

100 birds died of unknown reasons in a farm in the city of Volta Redonda,
southeastern state of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil.

The city's Sanitary Surveillance Agency sent for lab analysis, this Friday,
March 3, samples collected from the birds, and from the water of the lake
located at the Barreirinha Farm.

The Lanagro Laboratory, of the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, located
in Campinas, state of São Paulo, will analyze the material.

The Agency's Coordinator, Carlos Amaro, said that ducks, geese, wild
ducks and fish (totaling 10 kilos) died Monday, February 27, in that farm
in the municipality's rural area. He affirms that this occurrence is not
common in the region.

As precautionary measures they closed the area, communicated the fact
to the Ministry of Agriculture, collected material, burned dead birds and
fish, and started monitoring neighboring properties, which have not had
any problems. Amaro said that these sanitary procedures will be
maintained in the region, until they get the lab result.

The Coordinator said that, before dying, those animals did not show
symptoms of bird flu. And he added that, a week ago, a rat extermination
procedure was conducted in the property.

Ten Birds Died of Bird Flu Were Discovered in Northern Part of France

Paris. Ten seagulls died of bird flu were discovered in the Northern part of
France in the outskirts of Calais, Reuters reports. The results from the
tests of the dead seagulls proved positive for the virus of the bird flu H5.
The local authorities announced that the dead birds were not infected
with the dangerous strain of the virus H5N1 and that was why no serious
measures were taken in connection with the case.

1500 swine to be killed in Germany

HLT-GERMANY-SWINE FEVER

1500 swine to be killed in Germany

BERLIN, March 4 (KUNA) -- Minister of Agriculture of
Nordrhein Westfalen state Eckhardt Uhlenberg ordered
Saturday the killing of 1500 swine confirmed affected
with swine fever to prevent the spread of the disease
to nearby farms.

Uhlenberg told reporters that pigs will be held in
their barns for forty days if cases of plague were
confirmed anywhere closer than three kilometeres.

He said that the selling and slaughter of pigs from 30
barns in the state is banned, adding that the disease
does not transfer from animals to humans.

He pointed out that 70 pigs died in Recklinghausen and
350 others had to be killed in the same state because
of the disease.

The minister ordered to keep an eye on 900,000 pigs in
Nordrhein Westfalen, the largest and most populated
state in the country, so authorities can take action
as soon as any new case is found.

Meanwhile, Germany announced Saturday new measures to
combat the spread of bird flu including the
restrictions on access within a 3-kilometre radius of
all areas where wild birds infected with the virus
have been found. (end)

"70 pigs had contracted the disease and died within a
short time. Two neighbouring farms could be infected,
too. As a preventative measure, all pigs within a
one-kilometre exclusion zone will be put down,
according to the State Minister for Agriculture. The
disease is no threat to humans, but highly infectious
for pigs. "

Scotty:  Please if you don't agree with what we are posting or Rick is posting, please just look elsewhere for your reliable source of info, I doubt that anyone here just post info based on confabulation., fabrication or whatever for the sake of making people sick with worry.   I am going to stick with my first impression of you post, the one I posted when I first read your "baba" have you ever thought of just developing your own blog site? you might be able to attract your kind.  Oh...one more thought, " Iam not here to reason with you, I am here to create.." credits to William Blake.  ((  you might want  to check on who William Blake is)

Rick,

RE: Alaska pigeons, the last I read, the locals felt the birds had died becaue of rock salt they had ingested...it dehydrates them, making them easy pray for other birds. Here's a post on Juneau's "Eaglechat" board from someone who saw them up close. I've emailed her asking for an update--I hope she doesn't mind me posting this. (I lived in Juneau for ten years, btw.)

"Hello. I am the rehab coordinator with the Juneau Raptor Center. We received several calls about the pigeons, and although we are not allowed to treat and release them (per USF&W regulations), I went downtown to see what I could find. I was able to walk right through the flock of about 30 birds as they ate whatever was on the ground. There were red stains all over on the ground and one carcass that had been picked clean. Most of the birds were okay, but some seemed lethargic and one was fluffed up and sitting with it's eyes closed. I was able to walk right up and touch him. The trees were full of ravens and there was one eagle calling.

These birds definitely were either sick or poisoned by something. We believe what is happening is that the city spread rock salt all over the side walks, the birds are eating it and getting severely dehydrated which makes them lethargic and therefore easy pickings for the other birds. I know of two people (non-JRC) who took birds home and after just a few hours of food and water, said that they recovered nicely. If anyone finds a bird and would like to do the same, that would be great.
Hopefully, this will just be a temporary problem."
