Lake known for dead swans to be restored
Project aims to revive ecosystem's balance

POSTED ON 30/03/06

VANCOUVER -- A Fraser Valley lake known for its dead swans has become the focus of a major new environmental restoration project in British Columbia.

Tony Toth, executive director of the B.C. Wildlife Federation, said his group has agreed to join forces with the provincial Ministry of Environment, the federal Canadian Wildlife Service and the international conservation group Ducks Unlimited in an effort to revitalize Judson Lake.
"We have all agreed that the issue is not about saving swans, but is about the reclamation of a much wider ecosystem," said Mr. Toth, whose organization plans to spearhead a fundraising effort.

About 1,700 of them have died from lead shot poisoning in the Fraser Valley in the past six years, and many have been found along the shores of Judson Lake, where they go to roost after feeding widely in the valley.
Mr. Toth said studies suggest the swans have been picking up the shot at locations in the Fraser Valley. (excerpt)
