Hi.  I've been peeking in on this forum for the last couple months.  It has been invaluable and I feel like I know so many of you!  Anyway,  this is my first post and I have a question...

I live in Oklahoma and we have had an ongoing problem here with chicken waste in our city drinking water (it has affected the smell and taste of the water).  A study was done a few years ago that showed 74% of the phosphorous flowing into Lake Eucha is coming from non-point sources such as chicken "litter."  Another 24% comes from the city wastewater plant in Decater, AR which is fed by a chicken processing plant.  Lake Eucha is one of my city's main drinking water sources.

Will treatment of the water kill this virus?  Or do, we need to make another plan when everything starts to break?

DO NOT DRINK THAT WATER.  The virus can live in fecal matter for up to three months and one gram of infected fecal matter can infect up to one million birds

Will bleach do the trick?  What do you suggest?  Move?  I live in Tulsa which has a metropolitan area of around 700,000 people.  This is very concerning....

Well I just spoke to someone at the local Health Dept who told me that the Bird Flu is not here and therefore there's nothing to be concerned about.  She said she doesn't know of any plans to address this issue and that this does not fall into their jurisdication.  She said it's an FDA issue and that I should call them.  I'll let you know....

Yeah . . .tell us how the FDA tells you to call your local health department--that it is a local government thing out of their jurisdiction.  Get ready for a wild goose chase.  Sorry--bad example . . . .

Definately check. If it were me, I would be on bottled water. I would not be drinking it even before BF arrives if it is that polluted.

I would not be comfortable even bathing in that water once BF is confirmed in the area (could inhale the virus in the hot steamy mist of the shower, get it in through your eyes, you could be taking a bath in the virus!).

Perhaps boiling it or treating it can make it safe, but I dont know for sure.

Hi perky and welcome, I would not even bath in water with such a known problem. My suggestion would be to get a reverse osmosis water filter with a UV light. You can get a system for the whole house. It will be on the expensive side but we are talking life & death here and it can also be an important selling feature for your home if you do decide to move. Maybe the companies doing to the poluting should be paying for this. How come you haven't gone to your local gov(congressperson/senator) and demand something be done? This is unacceptable!!! Go to the media and be relentless! You deserve better!

This has been going on for years and there has been a tremndous public outcry.  In 2005, the OK state attorney general filed a lawsuit against 14 poultry companies.  I guess it's still going on as I haven't heard anything about it in months...you know how the legal systems moves.  I'm freaking out about this....of course when I try to talk to anyone about the bird flu much less this water issue in Northeastern OK, they look at me like I'm crazy.

I've read posts saying sterilise your drinking water with a few drops of bleach.  Does anyone know if this is safe?  Doesn't the bleach poison you?  We have a well. The water looks clean but I should prefer to sterilise it if we have to drink it when we have no power and can't boil it.  Anyone know?

Beth,

Look under Priority Preparations. There's plenty of info about water.  BTW, I really like your avatar.

It sounds like you do not have fecal matter in your water, but phosphates that are found in "fertilizer".  It is like having salt in the water.  If the water is being consumed by a large town, then even though the taste, or smell may be off, it should be safe.  Virtually all city water is chlorinated which should kill bacteria, and deactivate a virus.

thats what they said about a small town in Ontario, several people got sick from ecoli, I said to my dad, someones heads is about to roll for this. They never warned anyone when it became apparent there was a problem in the water supply.
I look at the stars and wonder what it would be like to touch them.
